• WHAT IS FASCISM?

• INTRODUCTION
• Over the past number of years I have received   a great many letters and emails chiding me for over-emphasizing the danger   of fascism insofar as the United States is concerned.

• Typical of these letters   is the following:

     

   

  "Mr. Shearer:

   

  "Your constant reference to the danger of fascism in the United States   is ridiculous. The groups that subscribe to that … [mindset] are at best miniscule   and only inhabit the fringes of our society. Groups like the KKK, the Aryan   Nations, the civilian militias, the Aryan Brotherhood and so forth are jokes.   They have no large following. You are way off the mark in your concern for   fascism, at least as it pertains to the United States."
• The fact is, however, I'm not the one who is "off   the mark;" he is the one.
• In ascribing fascism merely to fringe groups   such as the "KKK, the Aryan Nations, the civilian militias, the Aryan   Brotherhood," etc. the writer here exhibits an ignorance of fascism   that is not only shocking, but dangerous!
• Nonetheless, while it's shocking,   this understanding of what fascism is, is typical of people in the United   States.
• As a result of these letters, emails and other correspondences, I have felt   it necessary to provide a broader definition of fascism than   most Americans have been provided with, a definition that should   send shivers up and down your spines as you read this material   and ponder just how close the United States is to being subsumed   in a fascist state.

• WHAT THEN IS FASCISM?
• In their book, The Nazi Hydra in America -   a book highly recommended by Howard Zinn, author of A People's History   of the United States, Glen Yeardon and John Hawkins write:
• "Few other words cause more confusion … than fascism. It is often used   in the sense of extreme repression. Often the understanding of fascism is   limited to the Nazis and repression. The term has been applied to many individuals,   such as Joseph McCarthy, J. Edgar Hoover, and others. It is frequently - often   wrongly - used to describe police and law enforcement, and government and   its policies …
• "What then is fascism exactly? Webster's Dictionary defines it   as: 'A government system marked by a centralized dictatorship, stringent socioeconomic   controls and belligerent nationalism' …

• "According to [President] Franklin Roosevelt:

   

   

  'The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth   of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their   democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of   government by … a group or any controlling private power'.
• Yeardon and Hawkins suggest that we begin with   Roosevelt's definition: that fascism is a form of government that exists (often   amidst the trappings of democracy) for the benefit of a few over and against   the benefit of the many.

• They continue:

     

   

  "Another good definition of fascism comes from Heywood Broun, a noted   American columnist in the 1930s:

   

   

  'Fascism is a dictatorship from the extreme right, or to put it a little   more closely into our local idiom, a government which is run by a small   group of large industrialists and financial lords … I think it is not unfair   to say that any businessman in America, or public leader, who goes out to   break unions is laying the foundations for fascism'."
• What Broun has done here is to enlarge the definition   of fascism to include a system of government that stands against the economic   expression of worker's rights; in other words, it is the antithesis of socialism.
• It places the rights of "management" above the rights of workers;   the rights of the rich over and against the rights of the poor. Indeed, it   anathematizes the poor.

• Yeardon and Hawkins then add Upton Sinclair's   definition of fascism:

     

   

  "Fascism is capitalism plus murder."
• This makes sense because it cannot possibly be   imagined that "average people" would of their own volition support   a government that places the interests of the few above the interests of the   many; the interests of the rich above the interests of "average people."

• Finally, Yeardon and Hawkins give their own definition,   which in essence sums up the definitions cited above:

     

   

  "This book (meaning The Nazi Hydra in America) defines fascism   as follows, with one condition. Fascism is a repressive totalitarian regime   in which a small elite controls and uses the government for their [own] benefit.   Any action by the government that places the rights of a corporation or a   group of elites above the rights of the people is a step toward fascism."  
• NOTE: When one connects this definition of fascism to Professor   C. Wright Mill's (Columbia University) description of the state of elite   power in the United States, one is left shivering at how close to fascism   the country has moved in recent years:
• "... in this particular epoch a conjunction of historical circumstances   has led to the rise of an elite of power ... the men of the circles composing   this elite, severally and collectively, now make such key decisions as   are made; and that, given the enlargement and the centralization of the   means of power now available, the decisions that they make and fail to   make carry more consequences for more people than has ever been the case   in the world history of mankind."
• NOTE: Finally, one should take note of   the fact that fascism is not always or even necessarily   connected to anti-Semitism.
• The fascist regimes of  Benito   Moussolin in Italy, Francisco Franco in Spain and Augusto   Pinochet in Chile were not anti-Semitic.
• Thus, the fact   that those elements in the United States that are disposed   towards fascism are NOT anti-Semitic - specifically,   the Religious Right - should not give anyone reason to believe   that fascism is not alive and well in the United States.

• WHEN DOES FASCISM OCCUR?
• The "one condition" that Yeardon and   Hawkins cite is the difficulty in defining exactly when a capitalist democracy   transcends IRREVOCABLY into a fascist state that is controlled   by the few over and against the interests of the many, where the rich are   exalted and the poor are anathematized, where all forms of socialism are damned,   where unions are busted and where brutal repression is used to keep "average   citizens" in line.

• Yeardon and Hawkins explain:

     

   

  "The one flaw in this definition (see above) is that it fails to delineate   the transformation from a capitalist democracy to a fascist state.
• For instance,   when did Germany become a fascist state? Did it occur with Hitler's approval   as chancellor? Or was it before or after Hitler's appointment?
• "While the March 1933 election was not free, nevertheless, the Nazi   Party failed to gain a majority in the Reichstag. Thus it can be argued that   the transformation occurred after that election.
• However, Germany was well   along the road to a full fascist state before Hitler's appointment - [just   as the United States is today, and that even prior to the appearance of the   long-looked-for Restitutor Orbis].
• "The lack of a clear line marking the transformation [from a capitalist   democracy] to a fascist state points again to the movement's insidious nature   … [For this reason] … it is best to look at the traits that explore the degree   of fascism …"
• TRANSITIONING FROM A CAPITALIST
    DEMOCRACY TO A FASCIST STATE
• Yeardon and Hawkins rely on a series of traits   listed by political scientist Lawrence Brin to measure just how far down the   path towards fascism a capitalist democracy is; to gauge the degree to which   the elites have seized control of the state for their own interests.

• FIRST

     

  Since fascism is a rebellion by the elites to preserve their own power against   the "Great Unwashed Masses" fascism is first   and foremost a "top-down revolution or movement."
• This is the primary reason that fascism begins in times   of economic dislocation - when the elites believe their   economic interests are at risk from a revolt by the "people."
• While large numbers of followers of fascism such as Hitler's   Brown Shirts came from the middle and lower classes, the   elite of German society controlled the party.
• It was only   after Hitler assured prominent business leaders of his   opposition to socialism and unions that he gained power.

• SECOND

   

  The elites launch a campaign that emphasizes a disdain   for intellectuals, socialists and liberal views.
• This   campaign includes gaining control of the so-called "mass   media."

• Such an attack is necessary because the organizing power   of labor is the only real threat to a fascist regime.

• THIRD

   

  This opens the door for an attack on the trade union movement.
• In the end, "labor unions are either eliminated   entirely, or are co-opted and severely suppressed."

• FOURTH

   

  In the absence   of powerful unions and / or socialist political parties, the elites create   a situation in the state where -
• Corporate Power is Protected: The industrial and business   aristocracy of a fascist state often puts government leaders into power, creating   a mutually beneficial business-government relationship and power elite
• Rampant Cronyism and Corruption: Fascist regimes are   almost always governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each   other to government positions, and then use governmental power and authority   to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist   regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even   outright stolen by government leaders.
• Unbridles Corporatism: The corporate leaders direct   government policy for their own benefit. Fascism reduces controls on business   and suppresses or bans unions.

• FIFTH

   

  The successful execution of steps three and four (above)   cannot help but lead to extreme exploitation:
• Fascist   regimes inevitably reduce people to objects of commerce;   the worth of an individual is measured by his usefulness   to "management," and ultimately to the state.
• Citizenship may be revoked from groups of people to exploit   them and seize their property.

• SIXTH

   

  Because   it cannot be imagined that "the people" would willingly subject   themselves to the kind of economic exploitation envisioned in step five (above),   the elites are forced to employ:
• Violence and terror: Fascist regimes use violence and   terror to intimidate "the people" and gain and preserve their cruel   and brutal power.
• Hitler had his Brown Shirts intimidate voters and opposition   leaders by starting street brawls and even murdering the opposition. Once   in power, he used the Gestapo, the state secret police, to root out and remove   any opposition.
• Destructive divisiveness: All politicians use division   to win elections. However, under fascism, the divisiveness is uniquely destructive   and often takes the form of racism, class warfare or even genocide.

• SEVENTH

   

  As unions are busted, corporate power strengthened, workers   reduced to a state of penury, divisiveness in the over-all   population encouraged, etc., the elites begin to promote   an obsession with crime and punishment as a ruse   behind which they can bring to bear the authority of the   state against their political opposition under color of   the criminal code.

• EIGHTH

   

  As the elites continue down their undemocratic path, fraudulent   elections increase.
• Sometimes elections in fascist   nations are a complete sham.
• Other times, elections are   manipulated by smear campaigns against political opponents;   often assassination is employed; use of legislation to   control voting numbers or political district boundaries   and manipulation of the media are employed.
• Fascist nations   also typically use the judiciary to manipulate or control   elections.

• It is here, at the ninth step of the transition of a capitalist democracy   to a fascist state, that Christianity becomes so essential to   the process - at least in Western societies.

• NINTH

     

  As the power of the elites grows ever more autocratic and undemocratic, the   elites are forced to resort to sources other than "the   people" to justify their continued rule.
• Government   "of the people, by the   people and for the people" has now   become nothing more than an empty phrase. It's at this   point that the elites inevitably turn to religion in one   form or another to justify their rule, and religion   and government are intertwined.
• Governments in fascist   nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation   as a tool to manipulate public opinion.
• Government leaders   frequently use religious rhetoric, even when the major   tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the   government's policies or actions.

• TENTH

     

  As religion is ever more pressed into service by the elites to justify their   undemocratic rule, rampant sexism becomes the norm:
• As a result, the governments of fascist nations tend to   be almost exclusively male dominated.
• Under fascist regimes,   traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition   to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation.   [Again, we URGE you to read our new article,   "Transitioning from   Christianity to Fascism," especially the   section dealing with misogynism.]

• ELEVENTH

     

  As religion continues to be pressed into service by the elites to justify   their increasingly autocratic rule, those who fall outside the parameters   of the state's religion and culture are identified as enemies and scapegoats.

• This usually translates into an unremitting persecution of -

   
   
  •  

    Racial minorities.

     
   
  •  

    Ethnic minorities.

     
   
  •  

    Religious minorities.

     
   
  •  

    Liberals.

     
   
  •  

    Communists.

     
   
  •  

    Socialists.

     
   
  •  

    The gay and lesbian community.

• TWELFTH

     

  As the state gradually takes on a homogenous religious and cultural hue, a   powerful nationalism begins to take hold on "the   people."
• Fascist regimes tend to make constant   use of patriotic mottoes, slogans, songs and other paraphernalia.
• Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing,   in churches, and in public displays.

• THIRTEENTH

     

  Protection of the "homeland," the culture," and the country's   religion become paramount - which leads to an obsession   with national security.
• Supremacy of the military   is emphasized, and it is given a disproportionate   amount of government funding; the domestic agenda is neglected.

• Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

• FOURTEENTH

     

  Out of the religious atmosphere that the state fosters, it is inevitable that   a cult-like messiah figure will emerge surrounded by a   cadre of cult-like followers.
• The development of a messiah-like   figure has been common to every fascist state.

• UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF
    RELIGION IN A FASCIST STATE
• These, then, are the steps common in the development   of a fascist state as envisioned by Yeardon and Hawkins - and if that's the   case, even the most casual observer can see that the United States is well   down the path towards fascism.

• The most critical steps toward fascism begin with the NINTH step in   this process - the fusion of religion with the state.
• While this has not fully occurred yet in the United States,   it has certainly occurred within the Republican Party, and it   may be completed as a "white reaction" to an Obama   presidency.

• Nazi chic in Asia

• Uniforms and other imagery related to Nazi Germany have been on sale in east Asia, where some considered it cool.
• Hong Kong and Japan have each witnessed a growth in the casual wearing of SS uniforms, as well as increased interest in white power music (also known as Rock Against Communism).
• Sometimes in east Asia, Nazi uniforms are used as part of cosplay. In South Korea, an area generally isolated from Nazi cultural influences during the Nazi era, Time magazine observed in 2000 “an unthinking fascination with the icons and imagery of the Third Reich.”[9
• Nazi-inspired imagery featured in various early releases from Japanese band The 5.6.7.8’s.[10]
• In some parts of the world, World War II is not taught in schools as a battle of political ideologies, but as a conventional war. This type of education means that Hitler and the Nazi Party are not treated as war criminals or evil, but merely as charismatic and powerful leaders of countries during wartime.
• Some east Asians are interested in what Adolf Hitler said about east Asian history and philosophy; the Nazi work ethic; as well as militaries that wore Hugo Boss uniforms and drove tanks made by Porsche and Mercedes-Benz.
• George Burdi, the former head of the neo-Nazi record label Resistance Records, claimed to have sold many CDs to Japan, because some Japanese believed themselves to be the white men of the east.
• In Turkey, Hitler’s book Mein Kampf is an annual bestseller.[11][12]
• Western reaction to the Asian phenomenon has been one of sharp criticism and utter astonishment.
• Western diplomats, especially Germans and Israelis, have complained heavily, pointing out that Asians suffered under Japanese Militarism and occupation, and frequently compare them as an Asian version of Nazism in order to convey their discontent.
• German and Israeli embassies in Asian countries have pressured local authorities to shut down Nazi-themed bars, but this has usually resulted in the bar re-opening with only a changed name and no real change in attitude.

• The Real Story of Nazi Egyptology

• Thomas Schneider is exploring a subject that has never been studied before.
• The University of British Columbia professor is examining the history of German Egyptology during the Nazi era. The period that lasted from when Hitler became chancellor of Germany in 1933 - until he committed suicide in his bunker in 1945.
• The research is a work in progress and Professor Schneider continues to receive new archival documents and information. He plans to turn his work into a book length manuscript.
• While popular fiction, such as the Indiana Jones trilogy, depicts action packed films about this topic, the real story is far more complex.
• Professor Schneider generously took the time to talk about his research with me. He also provided me with detailed written notes, that outline his research, to help me write this story.
• Hitler Comes to Power
• In January 1933, Adolf Hitler, head of the far-right National Socialist (Nazi) party, was sworn in as Chancellor.
• Over the next few years he and the Nazi party would gain control over Germany’s institutions and levers of power, allowing Hitler to govern as a de-facto tyrant.
• One of those institutions was the universities which, before the rise of the Nazis, had enjoyed a level of autonomy.
• A tradition established in the 19th century saw the state as a “benevolent patron” for academic life. With Hitler in power, that quickly changed.
•

• “Since its inception, National Socialism strove for implementing a new system of education in agreement with its doctrine across the country's institutions of learning,” Professor Schneider wrote.

• “This policy was meant to be applied in a particularly stringent way to the institutions of higher learning which were seen as the potential spearheads of the new nation but also feared for their intellectual independence and power.”
• Before Hitler’s rise to power Germany was a respected centre of Egyptology. The foreign affairs ministry financed an archaeological institute in Cairo that was used as a base to conduct scientific research.
• The country’s scholars had made important contributions. To name a few examples, Adolf Erman helped unravel the grammar of Egyptian writing.Ludwig Borchardt uncovered the bust of Nefertiti and Heinrich Schäfer broke new ground in the understanding of Egyptian art.
• Professor Schneider pointed out that, in this pre-Nazi era, many American Egyptologists received their training in Germany, including James Henry Breasted (who, ironically, some regard as an inspiration for the Indiana Jones character).
• A Changing Situation

• Professor Schneider urged me to get an important point out in this story:

   

  You need to “warn the public against believing the discipline during the Nazi period was uniform,” he said.
• “You’re dealing with a number of individuals, a number of professors,” he said, adding that the situation also changed depending on the year and the institution.
•

• As I listened to the professor, and read his notes, I came to understand his viewpoint. The people involved in Egyptology, during this time, reacted to Nazism and its belief in the supremacy of an “Aryan race,” quite differently. 
• There is only a small cast of characters involved. Egyptology, in Nazi Germany, was a relatively small discipline. In 1945 there were only six chairs dedicated to the subject in the Reich with further positions as junior professors or museum staff. “The people they knew each other,” said Schneider.
• Egyptology Challenged
• In 1935, Helmut Berve, a professor of ancient history at the University of Leipzig and a dedicated Nazi, questioned Egyptology’s right to exist as a discipline.

• He wrote:

   

  The study of the Ancient Near East as far as it relates to peoples of a foreign race, of a nature alien to us and thus impossible to comprehend fully in its peculiarity, is doomed to resignation as soon as the problems exceed what can be established rationally.

   

  Therefore, it fails with regard to the new claim of values and losses its right to exist (...). Where the threshold of deeper questioning has been tred upon – as in Egyptology –, serious decisions have now to be taken.

• He expected that.
• Ancient Near Eastern Studies in Germany will automatically focus on the peoples akin to us in terms of race and mind; Egyptology and Assyriology will recede into the background.
• Schneider writes, “Berve pleaded for a national history both committed to and committing German nationhood ('volksverbunden und volksverbindlich') and tied the possibility of historical understanding to race ideology.”
• Pharaoh as Fuhrer

• Walther Wolf was an Egyptologist at Leipzig who had pro-Nazi leanings.

   

  He is known for lecturing while wearing a SA uniform.
• The SA was a pro-Nazi organization that sprang up in the 1920’s. They were the main force in Hitler’s unsuccessful coup attempt in 1923.
• In 1937 Wolf authored a defence of Egyptology as a discipline “Wesen und Wert der Ägyptologie.”
• Professor Schneider writes that Wolf’s defence, “unveils the distinct will to align his discipline with the doctrinal requirements of the new ideology. It postulates for Ancient Egypt a predominant significance of the racial collective ("Volksgemeinschaft") which Wolf believes to have been essential for the shaping of Egyptian culture (kulturprägend) and which he said was owed to "soil and blood" (Boden und Blut).”
• Adding, “Wolf construes pharaoh as the realizer of forces lying dormant in the national collective and waiting to be set free.”
• If these ideas sound familiar, they should, this leadership model for pharaoh is very similar to that which Hitler used for himself.

• Wolf viewed Akhenaten to be a poor pharaoh because he 'Did not uncover ideas that were lying dormant in the depth of their Volkstum, and fight for their full potential of development.'

   

  “This is clearly worded on the template of the role assigned to Hitler,” wrote Schneider.
•

• The Anti-Nazi League
• As Wolf attempted to twist Ancient Egypt into something the Nazis could agree with, a prominent Egyptologist stood up against this. Alexander Scharff held an Egyptology chair at the University of Munich. He was strongly anti-Nazi and in 1938 authored a piece that dismissed Wolf’s attempt to see Egyptology through the lens of Nazism. 

• Said Scharff of Wolf’s work:

   

  In it the attempt is made to understand the Egyptian culture from a new angle of view which is apparently rooted in National Socialistic ideology (...). Such slogans of today which may have a predominant significance in other areas, are of little use with regard to Ancient Egypt.
• There is no question of "race" being a factor in the formation of Ancient Egypt (...). It seems to me that a political event, and be it of the scale of the German revolution of 1933, cannot at this moment transform our understanding of a past civilization to the extent the author would like to make us believe with his treatise which to all appearances is meant to be programmatic. Academic arguing has always proceeded with measured steps, without being tied to particular dates.
• Professor Schneider told me that despite Scharff’s anti-Nazi leanings he managed to keep his job until the end of the war.
• George Steindorff was a prominent Egyptology Professor at Leipzig. He was also Jewish. He edited the journal Zeitschrift für ägyptische Sprache and was in charge of other editorial projects.

• In a 1935 letter to Adolf Erman, he lamented what was happening in Germany. He wrote-

   

  The Nuremberg legislation has completely paralyzed us and cut our thread of life, it has annihilated our zest of life and my zest of work (...). I was always proud to be able to say "civis Germanus sum", and cannot bear it to be locked up in a ghetto.
• We are likely to spend the few years that fate grants us with wandering all over the world, deprived of our homeland. In the place where I worked honestly for more than 40 years and where I was conferred all honours, I don't want to and cannot stay any longer.
•

  Facing a Concentration Camp
• No power of the world will (make) me take my pride; I don't want to be pitied, rather I pity the other. But there is one thing I have learnt in these days (...): to hate.
• Professor Schneider said that it appears as if the Ministry of Propaganda found it intolerable that a Jew have these editorial responsibilities and pressured Steindorff heavily to quit.
•  “There was a directive from Berlin that Steindorff could no longer be the protagonist of those publishing projects in Germany, those should go to a Nazi official.”
• Steindorff was forced to quit the journal in 1937 and in 1939 left for the United States.
• Walther Wolf, the SA uniform wearing Egyptologist mentioned earlier, was his replacement. Schneider believes it’s probable that Joseph Goebbels himself made the decision to force Steindorff out.

• Steindorff wrote in 1945, after he was safely in the United States that,

   

  During my darkest days at Leipzig, some weeks after the pogrom of November, 1938, he came to our house in Leipzig and invited me and my wife to go with him and find asylum in his house at Bonn, though to give us sanctuary might well have resulted in his confinement in a concentration camp.
• In 1938 Steindorff was in a desperate situation and was saved by an Egyptology colleague Dr. Hans Bonnet.
• A Base in Egypt
• When the Nazis took over Germany they inherited the Cairo office of the German Archaeological Institute.
• In other countries a special SS unit, the Ahnenerbe, was used to conduct archaeological research. Professor Schneider explained to me that the SS left Egypt alone and archaeological work was done by the institute`s Cairo office.
• The Cairo office operated until the war started in 1939. During that time Professor Schneider believes that the Nazis used it as a base to advance their interests in the Middle East.
• It was “a local outpost that could be instrumentalized for the government,” he told me. Germany had a number of interests in the area, including talking to Arab leaders who opposed Jewish settlement in Israel.
• The head of the institute, after the Nazis came to power, was Hermann Junker. He was an established Egyptologist. During the time of Nazi rule he conducted digs in the Cairo-Memphis area and Nubia. But, he spent the bulk of his energy excavating at the Great Pyramids at Giza.
• He was, “deeply involved in national socialism and a member of the NSDAP and other Nazi organizations during the war,” said Schneider.
• I asked Professor Schneider whether the Nazis got involved in his fieldwork, directing him to excavate at the Great Pyramids or telling him to look for certain artefacts.
• Schneider said that he has found no evidence of that kind of control. He believes that, when it came to excavations, Hitler’s government let Junker pursue his own agenda. 
• The details on what the institute was being used for are still being researched. But there is evidence that is was used for more than archaeology.
• In June 1945 George Steindorff, now living in the United States, wrote a letter to John Wilson, a professor at the Oriental Institute in Chicago. In the letter he discussed the involvement of different German Egyptologists with Nazism. 

• He wrote about Junker that,

   

  It is very difficult to describe the character of this man because he has none. I have heard that it was rumored in England that Junker acted as a spy in Egypt.  I do not believe it.  He was too clever to compromise himself by such activity.  He played safe. 
• However, he used his position and the State Institute to promote Nazi propaganda. The Institute was always available for Nazi meetings, Junker's house was always open to Nazi guests, chiefly Austrian.  Every Nazi found a cordial reception in the German Institute in Cairo.  I appreciate Junker as a scholar of the first order.  More than that, I am sorry I cannot say.  At best, his actions and opinions have always been ambiguous.
• The Göttingen Manifesto
• Hermann Kees was a professor of Egyptology at the University of Göttingen.
• According to Schneider’s research he was president of an extreme right-wing group Deutschnationale Volkspartei and played an indirect role in driving Albert Einstein out of Germany. 
• He was, “instrumental in the expulsion of Jewish faculty in 1934, after the laws for the restitution of the Civil Order were put into force,” Schneider wrote.
• In 1934, after the death of German president Paul von Hindenberg, Hitler implemented a series of laws that barred Jews, and people opposed to Nazism, from serving in government positions.

• Albert Einstein (then based in Berlin) and his colleage at Göttingen, Nobel Laureate James Frankh, both resigned in protest. They were hoping that other professors would resign in solidarity.

   

  That didn’t happen.
• Fourty-two professors at Göttingen published a manifesto condemning Frankh's resignation and calling for a faster implementation of the "necessary measures of purging."
• “This happened fast,” wrote Schneider. “One day after the publication of the manifesto, the first six Jewish professors were relieved of their duties. The man who initiated the manifesto and the expulsion of Jewish faculty was Hermann Kees.”
• Einstein’s and Frankh's hope had failed at Göttingen.

• Kees certainly didn’t hide his far-right views. On Akhenaten he wrote,

   

  One is certainly wrong to portray Amenophis IV as a gushing idealist who wished to turn the world's quarrels to eternal peace by the gracious sermon of human reconciliation and who therefore declined any warfare abroad.
   

   

  To be a great reformer, he lacked the creative force to anticipate, in the way of a seer, issues that were fermenting and wanted to take shape, and to shape them, and not the least did his personality lack authoritative charisma, carrying the stigma of repulsive ugliness.

• He himself possessed too many traits that were contrary to the Ancient Egyptian ideal of a master race; he was licentious, effusive, led by emotions, morally debauched and obstinate.

• Hitler’s Own Views
• Hitler’s own personal views on Egyptology remain something of a mystery. Professor Schneider said that more archival research needs to be done to determine this
• He does appear to have had an interest in Egyptian Art.
• Professor Schneider sent me an intriguing photo, dating to February 1939. It shows the opening of an Ancient Egyptian Art exhibition in Berlin. Sitting on the front row is Hitler himself.
• Unfortunately I cannot post this photo on the web since the copyright is still valid and is held by a photography firm. 
• Schneider points out that Hitler was particularly interested in the bust of Nefertiti and vetoed its return to Cairo.
• Hitler was planning to build a new museum in “Germania,” (his name for what would have been the transformed city of Berlin). According to Professor Schneider’s research the bust of Nefertiti would have been close to that of Hitler himself.
•  A Turning Point in Egyptology
• It’s difficult to gauge the full impact that the events of 1933-1945 had on German Egyptology. But certainly the impact was negative.

• “This was, what I think, a decisive turning point in the international history of Egyptology,” Said Professor Schneider. 

   

  “Germany lost its status and it has to struggle for many decades after the war until it again became recognized and appreciated (in) the discipline,” he said adding, “Germany had basically sacrificed, through the NS regime, its academic standing.”
• The loss of people such as Steindorff, hindered the country’s knowledge base.
• “They came not only from Egyptology but dozens of other disciplines, they established their fields of knowledge abroad, above all in the United States, and had they been given a perspective in a Germany without National Socialism they possibly would have stayed there.
• And many important strands of thinking or pools would have developed in Germany that now developed in the States,” said Professor Schneider.
• “(The) people who stayed in Germany, or younger generations, as a direct consequence were different people than those who would have lived and had a career in (a) Germany without the Nazis,” he said. 
• “It is difficult to say how the discipline would look today without National Socialism but we can very certainly say that Germany would have a different standing today.”
• The German Archaeological Institute in Cairo did eventually reopen after the way and today Germany is again a centre of Egyptological research.
• Herman Kees and Walther Wolf were both removed from their positions after the war. Although in 1963 Wolf did get a professorship at the University of Münster. Kees notes were confiscated as part of de-nazification efforts something which hindered his writing efforts.
• Years after the war Hermann Junker, while writing his memoirs, would choose to not write about the time of Nazi rule. Only saying that, “this was a dark time.”

• The Nazis and Christianity

• My recent American Thinker article "The Godless Delusion" generated a substantial volume of email and comment from atheists.
• Although I have directly responded to some of the people, assertions they have made -- some politely and others rudely --  require a detailed response.
• I have decided to focus on one particular theme that was most common: Many atheists presume that the Nazis were a weird variation of Christianity. 
  
• The sources that I use come from very old books, rather than Wikipedia.  I own these books and the books were written during the very years in which Nazism came to power.
• The authors of these books came from a wide variety of perspectives -- Christian, Jewish, atheist, Marxist and the like. 
• Christianity had declined severely in Germany at the time the Nazis came to power, which is why the Nazis were able to come to power. 
• In his book, The Dictators, Richard Overy states that in the decades preceding the First World War Germany was becoming increasingly secular, and that after that war, from 1918 to 1931, 2.4 million Evangelical Christians formally renounced their faith as well as almost half a million Catholics.
• In Prussia, only 21% of the population took communion and in Hamburg only five percent of the population took communion.  Before Hitler, German religious leaders were publicly condemning the rise of moral relativism and decline of traditional religious values.
• Weimar Germany largely had abandoned Christianity and increasingly was embracing hedonism, Marxism and paganism. 
• There, decline of Christianity in Germany led directly to the rise of Nazism.
• Professor Henri Lichtenberger in his 1937 book, The Third Reich, describes the religious life of the Weimar Republic as a place in which the large cities were "spiritual cemeteries" with almost no believers at all, except for those who were members of the clergy. 
• The middle class went through the motions, but lacked all living faith.  The workers, influenced by socialism, were suspicious of the church.
• Even in the countryside, preachers had little influence on the people.
• In the 1938 book, The War Against God, by Sidney Dark and R.S. Essex, describes pre-Nazi antipathy toward Christianity by noting that churches had lost all their vitality and that their services were lifeless.
• Mower, in his 1938 book, Germany Puts the Clock Back, wrote that by 1920, God and Christianity had been in steady decline, a process that had begun in 1860.
• Mower talks about a culture not so much casual as vicious about sexuality.  He writes of art sickened into atonal music, about the absence of any sense of sin, about entire graduating classes in high school turning up for birth control devices, and about the commonplace occurrence of abortion. 
• This hostility or indifference toward Christianity in Europe, and especially in Germany, led naturally to a profound anti-Christian sentiment in Nazi Germany. 
• Nazis, more than most Germans, were indifferent or hostile to Christianity.  Hitler originally appeared to just ignore Christianity.
• Dark and Essex write in their 1938 book that Mein Kampf  has few passages which in any way refer to religion, none that  refer to Hitler's own personal religion, or to the teaching of the Bible, nor any branch of Christian teaching.
• Jacob Marcus in his 1934 book by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations notes that "Though his parents were both Catholics, Hitler himself has apparently no interest in any organized religion." 
• Marcus also has an entire section in his book about Nazi "anti-Christian anti-Semitism."  Rauschning in 1938 wrote
  

  "The purpose of the National Socialism fight against Christianity is the same:  the total destruction of the last and most deep-rooted support of the forces of conservation.  The destruction of the spirit of Christianity in Germany is certainly more far-reaching than appears on the surface...Such vestiges of living Christianity as remain are steadily degenerating in the direction of a superficial and unthinking deism" and that ultimate goal as "...the total abolition of Christianity, which is not a mere philosophical fad of the National Socialists but an iron necessity of their system."
• Within a year of taking power, Hitler was saying: 

  "Christianity was incapable of uniting the Germans, and that only an entirely new world-theory was capable of doing so." 
• Also within a year of the Nazis taking power, The Twenty-Five Theses of the German Religion, a conscious modeling of the twenty-five points of the Nazi program, was published in Germany.
• Thesis XV of that Nazi publication states: 
  

  "The Ethic of the German Religion condemns all belief in inherited sin, as well as the Jewish-Christian teaching of a fallen world.  Such a teaching is not only non-Germanic and non-German, it is immoral and nonreligious.  Whoever preaches this menaces the morality of the people."
• In February 1937 Hanns Kerrl, Minister of Religion in the Third Reich, said: 
  

  "The question of the divinity of Christ is ridiculous and inessential.  A new answer has arisen as to what Christ and Christianity are: Adolph Hitler."  
• University Nazis in Keil wrote in 1935: 
  

  "We Germans are heathens and want no more Jewish religion in our Germany.  We no longer believe in the Holy Ghost; we believe in the Holy Blood." 
• Preaching from the pulpit against Rosenberg's racial theories was forbidden by the Nazis and Law 130 threatened penalties against any priest who preached "against the interest of the state." Göring ordered that the Hitler Gruss (the Hitler salute) was the only religious gesture allowed. 
• Just as Nazi propaganda made odious caricatures of lecherous Jewish preying on young German maidens, Nazi propaganda made identical caricatures of lecherous priests preying on young German maidens. 
• In August 1935, the bishops of Germany presented at Fulda a pastoral letter warning of the Nazi "campaign of annihilation against Christianity" and a year after that Bishop Bornewasser publicly spoke about the Christian men and women who were persecuted by the Nazis because of their faith.
• On November 4, 1936, the Nazis ordered the removal of crucifixes from schools in the Oldenburg area on the grounds that these were "symbols of superstition."
• This order was rescinded only after Nazis were faced with determined local opposition.  Then despite rescinding the Nazi prohibition of these "symbols of superstition," in December 1936 Nazi bureaucrats simply removed crucifixes anyway in Munsterland.  When Christians replaced them in some schools, they were arrested by the Nazis.
• The principle of the National Socialist state, Hitler told an audience in 1937, was "not in Christianity nor in social theory but in the unified people's community," and the same year Himmler banned all Confessing Church seminaries and instruction and he closed all private religious schools two years later. 
• Nordland, a Nazi magazine, called the Sermon on the Mount "the first Bolshevist manifesto." 
• In 1937 Stephen H. Roberts wrote in his book, The House That Hitler Built, that the hostility between Nazism and churches began as soon as the Nazis came to power, and that it quickly became impossible to be a good Catholic and a good Nazi. 
• Some Nazis were overtly and clearly anti-Christian.  Others were simply silent. 
• Hitler, however, did nothing to stop the drumbeat of pagan propaganda within the Nazi Party which included Heinrich Himmler, Baldur von Schirach, Alfred Rosenberg, Dr. Frick and many others, some of whom formally renounced their Christianity.
• The Confessional groups of Christians --Protestants who had refused to join the "German Christian" movement -- sent Hitler a letter in May 1936 asking whether he intended to "de-Christianize the German people." The response was wholly unsatisfactory, with the Christian clergy believing that Hitler had accepted honors due only to God."
• Nazis hated and mocked Christianity.  Most particularly, Nazis loathed the ideas that faith, not race, was critical and that Christians had a duty to love all people, including Jews.
• Christian clergymen were harassed, dismissed, arrested, tortured and murdered for defending these beliefs. 
• It is hard to see how less robust Christian faith would have made the lot of Jews easier in Nazi Germany.  It is impossible not to see that, except for brave Christians, the lot of German Jews (some of whom escaped the Holocaust) would have been worse. 
• Dorothy Thompson wrote on October 17, 1938 that National Socialism, like Communism, was a secular religion and that until that was understood, then nothing about Nazism and Communism made sense. 
• She then noted that both violated the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me."  Then Thompson states that this is why the most formidable opposition to both these totalitarianism movements came from people of faith; and that while it may be possible to unite Communism or National Socialism with some economic theory or political system or sociology, it is absolutely impossible to harmonize either with the Bible. 
• She observes that those who have thrown their lot with Hitler in Germany were those without serious religious convictions, and that Hitler has found the only opponent he could not terrorize or bribe among the Christians of Germany.   
• The same year, Professor Micklem at Oxford noted that
  

  "All political questions are at bottom theological.  The clash between National Socialism and the Christian church rests upon the incompatibility of two views of the world, two ‘anthropologies.'  In National Socialism there are no ultimate, universal standards.  Right is defined as that which accords with the demands of the people's souls.... The Church in Germany is of no mere ephemeral interest.  It raises in an acute form an issue which both National Socialism and Bolshevism present to every country.  What is to be the foundation of European civilization?"  
• The same book reveals -- surprise! -- that the pagan anti-Christian Nazi leader Alfred Rosenberg's movement "might easily ally itself with the anti-Christianity of Moscow."  Of course, it did just that.
• Fodor, who personally knew Russian Bolsheviks and followed closely the Bolshevik Revolution as well as the National Socialist revolution and the Fascist regime, noted in his 1940 book that the Nazis surpassed all other totalitarian systems in its persecution of churches, finding even the Soviet Union less hateful toward Christianity than the Nazis, who persecuted not only Christians but Christianity itself.
• In 1938 Hendrik Willem van Loon stated that Hitler has tried to deprive society of the only foundation on which true civilization and world peace can be grounded, Christianity, and for that van Loon leaves Hitler to the judgment of God.
• Overy, in his book, The Dictators, observes that Hitler's attitude toward religion and Christianity was identical to that of the Bolsheviks.
• The very same year, Erika Mann, in her book School for Barbarians, wrote that the fanatic war of National Socialism against the Church is fought on so large a field that the contest results only in battles won by one side and then the other, but that one thing is clear:  "the stake of the war is the souls of the children. Both sides are battling for their future."
• Mann notes that the three enemies constantly cited by Nazis were Judaism, Freemasonry and Christianity; and that the remedy proposed by the Nazis to solve the enemy of Christianity was to take Christian children, whose parents insisted on teaching them Christian virtues, away from their parents (much like the Bolsheviks would take Christian children away from their parents).
• This is similar to what Pierre van Paassen wrote in his 1939 book, Days of Our Lives, who says that Germany is farther on the road to dechristianization than the Soviet Union and that in place of God, Nazis have placed the almighty state which demands everything from man. 
• Also in 1939 Ernest Hambloch wrote that because the Roman Catholic Church had been opposing the Nazis as pagan, the Nazis accused the Vatican of being in league with Communism. 
• The same year Ogg wrote in European Government and Politics that from the Nazi viewpoint Christianity was part of the common value systems which the Nazis most vigorously opposed, that the Nazis specifically objected to values of "a common European origin" and that Nazism opposed reason as a workable guide to social action."
• Even the most superficial Christianity was rejected by many Nazi leaders and Nazi organizations. 
• Karl Haushoffer, the mentor of many early Nazi leaders, preached non-Christian beliefs, and Nazi metaphysics included organizations like the Thule Society whose members greatly admired the Japanese Black Dragon Society.
• The Thule Society practiced occultism, alchemy and Islamic mysticism. 
• Perhaps the best example of absolute repudiation of Christianity, even nominal Christianity contorted into something grotesquely different than any professed Christianity, comes from the mouth of Julius Streicher, a notorious defamer of Jews. He said that "It is only on one or two exceptional points that Christ and Hitler stand comparison, for Hitler is far too big a man to be compared with one so petty."
• The same book, which was published a few years after HaShoah by a respected Jewish organization trying to understand the nature of Nazi evil notes:
  

  "A Nazi magazine commented on the Golden Rule in 1939: ‘This fundamental law of Christianity completely contradicts our moral conscience, contradicts above all our warrior-like nature peculiar to the soul of our race.' Children were taught to pray to Hitler instead of to God.  Grace before meals given to poor children by the Nazi Welfare Committee ended: ‘For this food, my Fuehrer, my thanks I render.'  Another official child's prayer ended: ‘My Fuehrer, by Fuehrer, my faith and my light, Heil my Fuehrer.'" 
• Christ, to Nazis, was a nebbish.  Hitler was their Christ.
• Alfred Rosenberg, Nazi theoretician, said that there was no place in the Third Reich for Christianity in any form. 
• Christian ceremonies surrounding births, marriages, deaths and other solemnities ceased to be performed by Christian clergy. His ponderous tome, The Myth of the Twentieth Century, not only called for banning crucifixes from churches but also from village streets, and also for banning medieval images of Christ as the Lamb of God. 
• In the training camps of the Nazi Party it was repeatedly stated that National Socialism has three enemies: Judaism, Masonry and Christianity. 
• Martin Bormann hated Christianity even more than most Nazi leaders.  Goebbels frequently made fun of Christian morality.  Nazis in general considered Christianity a "soul malady," "foreign" and "unnatural." 
• Heinrich Himmler despised Christianity and members of the SS had to formally renounce their Christian faith and formally become agnostic in order to become a member of the Schutzstaffel. 
• Erich Ludendorff, the earliest and most important political figure in Germany to support the Nazis, said: 
  

  "The Jews are not our enemies because of their race, but because one of their subtlest rabbis, that man called Saint Paul, distilled the poison of the Christ myth out of the life of the story of Jesus of Nazareth.  The Jews are enemies of the Nordic race because they produced Christianity, which has been the poison that has destroyed the vitality of the Aryan people." 
• Matilde von Kemnitz, the wife of Ludendorff, promoted an unchristian neo-Teutonic cult that called, among other things, for the destruction of all churches and the creation of forest temples as places of sacrifice to pagan deities. 
• Not only were Christians particularly hated by Nazis, but Jews were hated because Christianity came out of Judaism.
• Christianity emphatically repudiates racial theories, the right of the strong to dominate the weak, and other notions dear to Nazis.  Hambloch in 1939 wrote: 
  

  "Modern democracy is the child of Christianity, and both were therefore anathema to Gobineau [the racial theorist who gave rise to much of Nazi racial "science."] Nietzsche proclaimed he was Antichrist.  Gobineau was far more anti-social.  He was anti-Christian." 
• Members of the Hitler Youth were forbidden to join church organizations and membership in the Hitler Youth was more or less compulsory.
• Christianity is perfect anti-Nazism and the Nazis knew it.
• Hitler Youth meetings were deliberately scheduled to coincide with Sunday church services. 
• Hitler Youth were taught to be rebellious against their parents, contemptuous of religion and to use crude and offensive language.  Lowenstein in 1941 wrote that in the Hitler Youth the neo-pagan cult began to fill the gap which was the result of a conscious erosion of Christianity.
• The Nazis even forbade parents to give their children Christian names and ordered babies instead to be given names like Dietrich, Otto or Siegfried.
• The teaching of Christianity by parents in the home was forbidden.  Churches were not allowed to collect funds for charitable work. 
• The Nazis transferred Catholic clergy to Protestant areas and Protestant clergy to Catholic areas.  Nazis smeared excrement on church altars and church doors, desecrated shrines, and threw statutes of saints into dung piles;
• and when synagogues were not available to attack and loot, churches were the target with Nazis yelling: "Down with Christians and Jews!"
• In many places, historic church feast days and holidays were banned and even the display of religious flags and banners was outlawed; often Nazis cordoned off areas necessary for church pilgrimages and offered free beer and sausages for secular events that deliberately coincided with church festivals.

• The Pagan Roots Of The Fascist Culture

• Fascism is an ideology which has its roots in Europe.
• The foundations   of fascism were laid by a number of European thinkers in the 19th   century, and it was put into practice in the 20th century by such   European counties as Italy and Germany.
• Other countries which were   influenced by fascism and adopted it 'imported' the ideology from   Europe. So in order to examine the roots of fascism, we must turn   to the history of Europe.

• European history has naturally gone through many stages and periods.   But looking at it in the broadest sense, we can divide into three   fundamental periods from the cultural point of view:

   
   
  1. The pre-Christian (pagan) period.
   
  2. The period when Christianity assumed cultural dominance in   Europe
   
  3. The post-Christian (materialist) period
• The idea of what we have described as 'The post-Christian period'   may strike many readers as odd. Because Christianity is still by   far the majority religion in European society. But many ideologies   and philosophies opposing Christianity, materialist philosophy being   the most important, had become increasingly influential by the 19th   century.
• fascism was born out   of pagan culture, and was later resurrected as a part of materialist   culture. There was no fascist ideology or practice throughout   the thousand or so years when Christian culture dominated Europe.
• This is because Christianity is a religion of peace and equality.   Christianity, which believes in and tries to bring people to live   by love, compassion, sacrifice, affection and humility, is the complete   antithesis of fascism.
• Fascists in the Pagan World
• The most fundamental feature of pre-Christian Europe was that   it possessed pagan beliefs, in other words polytheistic religions.
• Europeans believed that the false gods they worshipped revealed   many aspects of life to them and helped to them. Among the most   important of these were the gods of war, who appeared in just about   every pagan society.
• This prestige that gods of war enjoyed in pagan belief was the   result of these societies' regarding violence as sacred.
• Pagan peoples   were all barbarian and lived in a permanent atmosphere of war. To   kill and spill blood in the name of the people was seen as a sacred   duty.
• Savagery and violence of almost all kinds could find a justification   in the pagan world. There was no ethical source to forbid violence   or say that it was wrong.
• Even Rome, thought of as the most 'civilized'   state in the pagan world, was a place where people were made to   fight to the death or were torn to pieces by wild animals. The Emperor   Nero came to power by having countless numbers of people killed,   including his own mother, wife, and stepbrother. He had Christians   torn apart by wild animals in the arena, and tortured thousands   of people just because of their beliefs.
• While this culture of violence ruled in Rome, the barbarian pagan   peoples of the north, such as the Vandals, Goths, and Visigoths   were even more savage. These peoples tried to wreak devastation   on each other, and also to plunder Rome.
• The pagan world was one   where only violence ruled, where the use of violence of all kinds   was counted as quite ethical, and even where there was no serious   concept of ethics at all.
• The most concrete example in the pagan world of a 'fascist' system   in the modern sense was the Greek city-state of Sparta.
• Sparta: A Model for All Fascists
• Sparta was a military state, dedicated to war and violence, and   alleged to have been founded by Lycurgos in the 8th century BC.
• An absolute education system was set up. Under this the state was   very much more important than the individual.
• Peoples' lives were   evaluated by whether they would be of use to the state or not. The   lives of strong, healthy male children were dedicated to the state,   unhealthy babies were left on mountains to die.
• (This Spartan   practice was taken as an example by Nazi Germany, and it was claimed,   under the influence of Darwinism, that the sickly had to be eliminated   for a 'healthy and superior race.')

• Parents in Sparta were responsible   for taking care of their sons until the age of seven. From then   until the age of 12, children were placed in teams of 15, and those   who succeeded in conforming to the rules were selected as leaders.
• Children strengthened their bodies and prepared for war by spending   their time doing sports.
• The only songs the children were allowed to sing   and learn were about war and violence.
• Literacy was unimportant, and there was little interest in music   or literature.
• (The fascist education given   to children from the age of four by Mussolini and Hitler was very   much the same).
• It was a Spartan custom to raise people with a warrior   spirit by disregarding art, literature, and education.
• The most important of the thinkers who made detailed statements   about Sparta was the famous Greek philosopher Plato.
• Although he   lived in Athens, which was governed democratically, he was in awe   of the fascist system in Sparta, and portrayed Sparta as a model   state in his books.
• Because of Plato's fascist tendencies, Karl   Popper, one of the foremost thinkers of the 20th century, describes   him as the first source of inspiration for oppressive regimes and   an enemy of open society in his famous book The Open Society and   Its Enemies.
• Popper explains how Plato calmly defended the killing   of babies in Sparta, and describes him as the first theoretical   proponent of 'eugenics:'
• To this end, it is important that the master   class should feel as one superior master race. 'The race of   the guardians must be kept pure', says Plato (in defence of infanticide),   when developing the racialist argument that we breed animals with   great care while neglecting our own race, an argument which has   been repeated ever since. (Infanticide was not an Athenian institution;   Plato, seeing that is was practised at Sparta for eugenic reasons,   concluded that it must be ancient and therefore good.) [1]
• These views of Plato, who regarded human beings as a species of   animal, and proposed that they would evolve by forced mating, came   to the fore once again with Darwinism in the 19th century and were   implemented by the Nazis in the 20th.
• While defending the Spartan model, Plato also defended another   aspect of fascism, the state use of pressure to administer society.
• In Plato's view, this pressure should be so comprehensive in daily   life that people should be unable to think of anything apart from   the orders of the state and behave in a totally brainwashed manner,   leaving their own intelligence and free will aside.

• The following   words by Plato, which Popper quoted in his book as a complete statement   of the fascist mentality, describe the dimensions of pagan fascism:

   

  The greatest principle of all is that nobody,   whether male or female, should be without a leader. Nor should   the mind of anybody be habituated to letting him do anything at   all of his own initiative; neither out of zeal, nor even playfully.   But in war and in the midst of peace - to his leader he shall direct   his eye and follow him faithfully. And even in the smallest matter   he should stand under leadership. For example, he should get up,   or move, or wash, or take his meals . . only if he has been told   to do so, by long habit, never to dream of acting independently,   and to become utterly incapable of it. • This view, that human   beings are a kind of animal, means administration by fanatical racism,   the growth of war and conflict, state pressure on society, and brainwashing.
• With these ideas and practices the Spartans and Plato exhibited   the fundamental characteristics of fascism.
• Fascism's Withdrawal in the Face of the Values   of Monotheism
• The fascist-pagan culture which dominated Europe disappeared by   stages with the spread of Christianity in the 2nd and 3rd centuries   AD, first to Rome and then to all of Europe.
• These three pagan features, racism, bloodshed, and seeing human   beings as a species of animal, are also the basic characteristics   of fascism. In Europe, they were vanquished by Christianity. In   the Middle East, the same victory was achieved by Islam over Arab   paganism. Before the advent of Islam, the Arabs (and other Middle   Eastern and Central Asian societies) possessed a warlike, bloodthirsty,   and racist culture.

• Even the Spartans' barbaric abandoning of unwanted   children to die was implemented by pagan Arabs in the form of burying   female children alive. The Qur'an mentions this savage practice:

   

  When the baby girl buried alive is asked for   what crime she was killed. (The Qur'an , 81:8-9)

   

  When any of them is given the good news of   (the birth of a daughter) the very thing which he himself has ascribed   to the All-Merciful his face darkens and he is furious. (The Qur'an ,   43-17)
• The Arabs, and other Middle Eastern and Central Asian societies,   only came into possession of a peaceful, civilised, intelligent   culture, hostile to bloodshed, after they were enlightened by Islam.   Thus they were freed from the old tribal wars and nomadic savagery,   and found peace and stability with monotheism.
• Modern Fascism: The Return of Paganism
• Although European pagan culture was suppressed by Christianity,   it did not die. In the 16th and 17th centuries, a number of European   thinkers, influenced by the works of ancient Greek philosophers   such as Plato or Aristotle, began to carry concepts from the pagan   world back to Europe.
• The rebirth of paganism was identified quite clearly in the French   Revolution, which is widely accepted as the political result of   Enlightenment philosophy.
• The Jacobins, who led the bloody 'terrorist'   period of the French Revolution, were influenced by paganism, and   nurtured a great hatred of Christianity.
• a new 'religion of reason' was established, based on pagan   symbols rather than Christianity.
• The first signs were seen in the   'revolutionary worship' on the Federation Holiday on July 14, 1790,   and then spread widely. Robespierre, the bloody leader of the Jacobins,   brought new rules to 'revolutionary worship,' set the principles   of these out in a report under the name ' Worship of the Supreme   Being.'
• One striking result of this development was the turning   of the famous Notre Dame Cathedral into a 'temple of reason.'
• The   Christian figures on the walls were torn down, and a female statue   known as 'the goddess of reason' erected in the centre of it, in   other words a pagan idol was put up.
• This pagan tendency was expressed by the revolutionaries with a   number of different symbols. The red caps worn by the revolutionary   guards during the French Revolution, and which were used in many   illustrations as a symbol of that revolution, were a symbol descended   from the pagan world and the myth of Mithra. • The neo-Pagan tendency which began with the French Revolution   was given shape by Friedrich Nietzsche and carried forward to Nazi   ideology.
• Evolutionists such as Charles Darwin, Francis Galton and   Ernst Haeckel tried to give so-called scientific support to this   new rising paganism, by denying the existence of God, showing that   all of life consists of a 'struggle for survival', and justifying   racism.
• The American historian Gene Edward Veith sums this reality up   this way in his book Modern Fascism: Liquidating the Judaeo-Christian   Worldview: "Fascism is the modern world's nostalgia for   paganism. It is a sophisticated culture's revolt against God."   [4]
• The Pagan Ideology of the Nazis
• The Nazis defended paganism, both during the early stages, and   also when they came to power in 1933. They tore German society away   from Christianity, and tried to turn it to pagan beliefs.
• A short while after Hitler came to power, Christian holidays and   festivals were replaced by pagan ones. 'Mother Earth' or 'Father   Sky' were called on at wedding ceremonies.
• In 1935, Christian prayers   in schools were stopped, and then all lessons concerning Christianity   were banned.
• Schoolchildren were taught the so-called 'Glorious pre-Christian   German history,' and various rites and ceremonies, legacies of pagan   culture, were held all over Germany. All Nazi meetings were in the   form of traditional pagan ceremonies.
• There was almost no difference   between Nazi rallies, held under the shadow of flaming torches,   where slogans full of hate and violence were shouted and Wagner's   pagan music played, and the perverted ceremonies carried out thousands   of years ago at pagan temples and altars.
• Ancient Greek   concepts and symbols began to predominate under Nazi rule, and many   statues similar to Greek statues were made, showing strong men and   women of the Aryan race.
• The Nazis also used the arts to re-awaken paganism.
• Hitler dreamed that a 'superior race' would   be formed by the use of eugenics, and establish a cruel and oppressive   'world kingdom' based on the Spartan model. The expression 'The   Third Reich' is a statement of this dream. And as a result of this   dream, 55 million people lost their lives in the Second World War,   the bloodiest conflict that had ever been seen.
• The Nazis' Anti-Semitism: Another Expression of  pression of   Hatred of Religion
• The reason for the psychopathic hatred the Nazis feel for the   Jews (and for the massacres they carried out because of it) was   their pagan ideology, which had a hatred of religion.
• According to Nazi logic, the Germans had first been a warrior,   pagan society, then they had abandoned that culture with the spread   of Christianity, and Christianity was a continuation of Judaism.
• Therefore, the Nazis' hatred of Christianity stemmed from the fact   they saw it as a 'Jewish conspiracy.'
• That the Prophet Jesus,   himself of Jewish origins, should be loved and respected by the   Germans, whom they considered the 'master race,' was an idea the   Nazis found unacceptable. In the Nazis' opinion, it was not prophets   of Jewish origin who should light the way for the German people,   but the cruel and barbaric warriors of pagan German culture.
• Nazi ideology saw world history as a conflict between the 'Aryan   race' and the 'Semites.'
• According to the Nazis, the Aryan race   was the leader of Indo-European culture, and the Semites (the Jews   and Arabs) the leaders of Middle Eastern culture.
• The fundamental   feature of Indo-European culture was its pagan beliefs. It was for   this reason that the Nazis saw themselves as the inheritors of a   pagan culture. They looked on the Jews as a hostile race who had   abandoned paganism and spread monotheistic belief over the world.

• The Pink Swastika, which discusses the Nazis' pagan ideologies,   summarizes the subject in this way:

   

  The reason why the Nazis first attacked the Jewish   people and swore to exterminate them physically and spiritually   is because the teachings of the Bible, both the Torah and the New   Testament, represent the foundations on which the whole system of   Christian ethics rests. [5]
• This deviant Nazi belief can be seen in many other fascist movements.   Many neo-fascist groups today hold pagan beliefs which they consider   the 'religion of the Aryan race,' and have a particular hatred of   the revealed religions of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, which   they describe as the 'semitic myth.'
• And because of this distorted   logic, fascist groups have grown up in the Islamic world which have   tried to develop a new anti-semitism in the shape of "hatred   of Arabs".
• Whereas divine religions are not addressed solely to the Semitic   races, but to everyone in the world, and the salvation of everyone   lies in following the common call of these religions and believing   in and submitting to God. Fascism, which denies the religion that   God has revealed to mankind and reveres the deviant pagan religion   of its ancestors, actually consists of a great imprudence.

• God mentions   these imprudent people who turn to the 'religion of their ancestors'   in the Qur'an :

   

  When they are told, 'Follow what God has sent   down to you,' They say, 'We are following what we found our fathers   doing.' What, even though their fathers did not understand a thing   and were not guided! (The Qur'an , 2:170)

• Jung believed that just as the human race all started out pagan and only later, having  lost touch with its pagan roots, became rootless, "civilized" and Christian, so Germans  start out, in infancy, as spontaneous pagans, but this spontaneous religion is overlaid  with the artificial ideas of monotheism...

• Extersteine:   the quest for Germany’s roots
• In the 1920s and   30s, the Nazi party used the study of the Irminsul, “the   Great Pillar”, as the cornerstone forging a renewed Germany   identity. The enigmatic rock formation known as the Externsteine   became the focus of these endeavours.
• Philip Coppens

• The   Externsteine is Germany’s answer to Australia’s Ayers   Rock. This distinctive rock formation is situated in the Teutoburger   Wald, not far from Detmold. This series of tall, narrow rock columns   rise from the wooded hills and appear to be the only such stone   formations in the entire area, though on the hills on either side   of the formation, the Knickenhagen and Bärenstein, similar   rocks are hidden, only visible as perpendicular ribs along their   northern flanks. But it’s what is visible that counts, and   hence, the Externsteine are a unique series of sandstone columns   up to forty meters tall, forming a wall several hundreds of meters   long.
    Arriving around ten on a sunny, late May morning, will reveal   few visitors and a
• gigantic car park. By noon, it is clear why   the car park is so large.
• Most tourists come here to climb the   Externsteine, by means of two steep staircases, one which leads   to a viewing platform, the other to a small, but enigmatic chapel   that has been carved on top of the middle rock.
• One can only wonder   whether today, the largely German tourists are aware that the   site was considered to be tremendously important during the Nazi   regime.
• The first point of interest is at ground level, where there is   a relief, known as the Descent from the Cross. It is, at first   sight, a normal depiction of Jesus at the Cross, with the usual   angels and crying people. Christ is held by Joseph of Arimathea,   with the Virgin Mary on the left. Nicodemus stands on a tree-like   chair, to the right John holds the Book of Revelation, while above   all, is God, as well as the sun and the moon.
• It is the “tree-like chair”, right next to the   Cross, which has been suggested to represent the Irminsul.
• In the lower section,   a huge dragon entangles two kneeling figures, probably Adam and   Eve.
• The   Irminsul was a World Tree, and its cutting down – echoing   the cutting down of the elm in the French town of Gisors –   signaled the demise of the native pagan religion, which was substituted   with Christianity.
• The   importance of the Irminsul was reinvigorated by Karl Maria Wiligut,   Himmler’s Rasputin, who largely made the Irminsul the centre   of his new religion – which some have mistakenly seen as   part and parcel of Nazism. In Wiligut’s personal viewpoint,   Irminism was the religion of the Germanic deity Irmin, meaning   “great, strong”. Irminsul supposedly meant “Great   Pillar”, and it is clear that this was indeed a pagan belief-system   in a “centre of the world”, where the “World   Tree” connected the Earth to Heaven. The painting at Externsteine   thus symbolised the cutting down of the World Tree, which was   replaced with the belief in Jesus Christ, who died at the Cross.  
    So far, so good, in the sense that such thinking is not at all   at odds with what we know about the beliefs of pagan societies.   But Wiligut went further, claiming that the Bible had been written
• in Germanic, and that this was an aberration of a Germanic religion,   whereby the “real Saviour” had been substituted with   the modern Jesus Christ.
• Even here, the notion that there were   several Saviours is not outrageous, though, of course, making   it all German was the first aberration.
• What was most controversial,   were Wiligut’s dates: he felt that this “original   Christianty” – Irminic Christianity – dated   back no less 228,000 years, when there were three suns, and the   Earth was inhabited by giants, dwarfs and other mythical creatures.
• By 12,500 BC, Irminism had been revealed and from that time became   the religion of all Germanic peoples, until the schismatic adherents   of Wotanism gained the upper hand.
• Finally, he argued, by 1200   BC, the Wotanists succeeded in destroying the “centre of   the world” at Goslar, which forced the construction of a   new temple at the Externsteine, which was in turn appropriated   by the Wotanists in 460 AD. Hence why the Externsteine were so   important.
• Wiligut   has since been seen as a madman, because he was indeed interned   in an asylum for a number of years. Though his internment is often   seen as evidence of his insanity, the facts are somewhat different.
• Wiligut was sitting at a Salzburg café on October 29, 1924,   when an ambulance drove up, attendants emerged and took him into   custody, even using a straightjacket.
• In a report filed over a   year later, the main reasons for the internment were given: his   unfamiliar cosmological and religious ideas, which included the   notion that he “traces his descent back to Wodan”.
• Hence, it were his historical opinions that were seen as evidence   of his madness; apart from that, he displayed no signs of “real”   madness.
• Released in 1927, he continued to write, and in September 1933   made the acquaintance of Heinrich Himmler, soon to become one   of Nazi Germany’s most important leaders. Wiligut was invited   to head up a Department for Pre- and Early History which was created   for him within the SS Race and Settlement Main Office.
• In the   spring of 1935, Wiligut was transferred to Berlin, to serve on   Himmler's personal staff.
• Throughout, he continued to claim that   he was a genuine mystic, one of a long line of Germanic mystic   teachers, reaching back into prehistoric times. He claimed to   have spiritual powers that allowed him direct access to genetic   memories of his ancestors thousands of years ago, no doubt arguing   that such “direct revelation” was more important than   the archaeological record, which seemed unwilling to substantiate   his claims.
• That the Externsteine were   a center of religious activity for the Teutonic people is a belief   that can be traced back to Hermann Hamelmann, who wrote as much   in 1564: “Charlemagne has made the Externsteine, a pagan   idol, into a (Christian) altar”.
• Wiligut’s historical timeline was, for sure, imaginative,   but not totally without foundation.
• However, the archaeological   record on the site cannot reveal any traces earlier than the 11th   century, which might mean that the site was so sacred that no-one   was allowed to approach it (quite similar to Ayers Rock), or that   it only became considered sacred post the 11th century.
• Definitely   by the 12th century, when the relief was carved, it was seen as   such and there is no doubt that the relief shows an Irminsul.
• At   the centre of the Irminsul cult is not so much Willigut’s   interpretation of it, but Charlemagne.
• It was he who is known   to have cut down one or more Irminsul when he conquered Germany.
• The story is best illustrated and documented in Obermarsberg,   somewhat south of the Externsteine. Obermarsberg, previously Eresburg,   is a prominent hill dominating Marsberg, as well as the Diemel   River, a tributary of the Weser River.
• It is known that there   was an Iron Age hill fort, used in some of the battles that occurred   between the Roman troops and the Germanic tribes.
• It is unclear   which particular tribe resided here and there is no particular   reference to Eresburg prior to the Saxon Wars.
• The most important event is seen as having occurred in 772, when   Charlemagne conquered Eresburg, and cut down the Irminsul, building   a church to St Peter on the spot.
• Sturmus, who was a follower   of Bonifacius, was left behind to teach the locals the message   of Jesus Christ, so that they would abandon their pagan ways.
• The   church of St Peter is a large, interesting building. On the left-hand   side, near the confessional, is a solitary stone, which is labeled   “Irminsul”, and which is known to have been found   on the site in 1938.
• Speaking to the local vicar, he notes that   there is doubt whether this is indeed the original Irminsul, noting   that it is not made of wood, but is instead a stone structure,   similar in form to the Irminsul on display in Externsteine –   though this time, not cut down.
• The vicar then relates the story   of how, indeed, Charlemagne cut down the Irminsul, and leads us   down to a small chapel, located under the main altar. Though today   off-limits and locked by key, it is here, at the spot where the   original main altar was built, that the original Irminsul stood   that Charlemagne had cut down and where a Christian altar was   built.
• The Irminsul in the church above is therefore thought to be a   fraud, and the vicar implies it was a sign of the times. 1938,   of course, was when the Nazi regime was in power and the fortunate   discovery of an Irminsul might have helped promote some of Wiligut’s   beliefs.
• Wilhelm Teudt, a Protestant vicar,   had carried out private research into Germanic culture in Detmold   from 1920 onwards.
• But   Wiligut was not alone, nor the first, to focus on the Irminsul   in the early 20th century.
• Teudt had interpreted the Externsteine as an   “ancient Germanic cult centre” and in 1933 Teudt joined   the Nazi Party and proposed to turn the Externsteine into a “sacred   grove” for the commemoration of the ancestors. Hence, it   should be he, not Wiligut, who was responsible for making the   Externsteine part of the Nazi doctrine.
• Heinrich Himmler was open to the idea, and in 1933 initiated and   then presided over the “Externstein Foundation”, though   it was actively run by SS-Standartenführer Wolfram Sievers.
• Interest in the site was also furthered by the Nazi Ahnenerbe   division, developed to further research into the anthropological   and cultural history of the Aryan race.
• There remain copies available   of Dr. Prof. Wilhelm Teudt’s “Kampf um Germanenehre”   (In Battle for German Honour), published by the Ahnenerbe in 1940,   which has the Irminsul on the cover of the book.
• A look inside   the book also reveals that the Ahnenerbe used the Irminsul as   its logo.
• The book’s 215 pages make the case for Teudt’s   theory, and it is therefore no wonder that he became known as   the “Extersteineführer”. Teudt argued that it   was at the top of the highest rock at Externsteine that the sacred   Irminsul once stood.
• That   highest rock is not only the central rock, but also the only rock   that has retained its original peak. It is also the rock that,   on top, has an enigmatic chapel constructed.
• In the front part,   a niche was hewn out, creating a small chapel, containing a narrow   altar. A circular window faces almost exactly north-east, towards   sunrise on the summer solstice.
• Interestingly, no historical source   relates to the origin of this chapel and hence when it was built,   is a question mark.
• The problem, of course, remains with the dating, even if we were   to assume that the Extersteine became the site of the Irminsul   in 460 AD, as Wiligut proclaimed.
• Paleolithic and Mesolithic stone   tools were found there dating from before 10,000 BC, but little   else was found, until the site enters history in 1093 AD, when   the land surrounding the stones was bought by the monks of the   Abdinghof of Paderborn. The late 11th century, of course, is even   long after Charlemagne’s campaign, and hence the argument   that here too, an Irminsul was destroyed, remains without evidence.
• But   rather than an Irminsul on top of the central rock, as Teudt argued,   I would suggest it was the central itself that was seen as the   Irminsul.
• This becomes apparent when we note that there are references   to Irmin in the tribal name Herminones, which some link with Hermes   – himself often linked with pillars, known as hermae.
• But   it is from the Old Norse Jörmunr, which was one of the names   of Odin, just like Yggr, that there is a connection to the World   Tree.
• Noting that the name Externsteine in origin was known as   the “Stones of the Egge”, one can only wonder whether   there is a linguistic connection between Yggr and Egge.
• Yggr's   horse, or Yggdrasil, was the yew or ash tree from which Odin sacrificed   himself, and which, like the Irminsul, connected Heaven and Earth.
• Where Teudt et al. went   wrong, was that they wanted to present Germany with a uniformed,   straightforward history. In truth, it is likely that there were   several Germanic tribes in the region, each of them having an   Irmin pillar, meaning that Charlemagne had to cut down more than   just one – and that the Germany tribes were not as united   as the Nazis hoped they would be.
• It is therefore clear that within the reasoning of Teudt and Wiligut,   there were some meaningful observations.
• Indeed, Jakob Grimm cites the   12th century Kaiserchronik as mentioning several Irmin pillars   in existence, each being a “Great Pillar” for a tribe.
• Hence, Obermarsberg had one, Externsteine could have had one,   Goslar – for Wiligut the most important site of all –   could have had one. And Hildesheim, roughly between Externsteine   and Goslar, has one – and just south of that town, there   is even a village named Irminseul, leaving no doubt there was   once an Irminsul connection there too.
• In   Hildesheim, the official story goes that the remains of an Irmin   pillar – dating back to Roman times – are present   inside the cathedral, “where it has been adapted as a candelabrum”.   If one enters the
• cathedral looking for an image similar to the   Irminsul of Obermarsberg or the relief of Externsteine, one will   leave disappointed.
• Indeed, the only candidate inside the church   is a candelabra up a flight of steps – normally off-limits   to the public.
• Its interpretation as an Irminsul will only be   apparent if one compares it to the depiction of the Irminsul on   the commemorative plaque about the felling of the Irminsul in   772 inside the entrance of the church in Obermarsberg.
• By apparent coincidence, this church holds another important “great   pillar”: the “Pillar of Christ” is 4.7 meters   high and made of bronze and a fantastic piece of workmanship.   Reliefs on the pillar depict all the miracles of Jesus in a spiral   from the bottom to the top. One can only wonder whether this “Pillar   of Christ” is somehow meant to balance the Irmin pillar,   each one sitting on one side of the altar.
• It   is therefore clear that the area was Irminsul-dense, and just   to the south of Obermarsberg is Priesterberg, a hill overlooking   the valley of the Diemel.
• Some argue that it was the location   of yet another Irminsul, which was replaced by a stone structure,   possibly a tower. Others argue that the tower is merely part of   a system of watchtowers, and indeed, from the nearby road and   car park, other towers are visible.
• But when you inspect the tower   more closely, you find it is a most curious construction, hollow   at its centre and leading to a small subterranean cavity, yet   largely unable to accommodate a human being.
• The only conclusion   one can draw is quite similar to that drawn by Ralph Ellis when   confronted with round towers: could this tower have protected   the trunk of a tree that grew from this “stone pillar”?
• As bizarre as it might sound, an inspection on the ground suggests   this is the only logical scenario. And if true, then we might   indeed be confronted with a “World Tree” on this site   too.
• But the more likely scenario is that the Irminsul was the   central rock itself and the presence of a stone pulpit in front   of it suggests that sermons were preached from here.
• So   was there, or was there not, an Irminsul at Externsteine?
• Some   have argued that if there was, that it stood on top of the central   rock.
• When delving into the earliest historical records of the site,   it is clear that the site had some pagan connotation, hence no   doubt why the large relief, measuring 3.5 by 5 metres and being   the largest rock relief in Europe, was created here, to visualise   the conquest of Christianity over the pagan tradition.
• Itself   dating from the late 12th century, a dedication on the altar in   the main grotto behind the relief has the date as 1115 and is   considered to be the oldest evidence of occupation of the site.
• Records state that in the Middle Ages, this was a hermitage, and   the oldest record on the matter, dated 1366-1367, refers to it   as the “reclusorium Egesterenstein”. But despite its   Christian usage, some features of the site are not easily explained.
• Why, for example, was there an Eagle carved in the door that leads   to two artificial caves? The basin in the floor of one cave is   likely to be partially natural, partially artificial, but no definite   explanation as to its purpose has ever been given.
• Near the site   of the relatively modern and artificial lake is also an empty,   stone-hewn tomb, whose purpose has equally escaped a straightforward   explanation.
• Some have   – rather imaginatively – argued that the entire complex   might have been seen as a replica of Jerusalem, with the empty   tomb symbolising the Tomb of Christ and forming the object of   a pilgrimage, for those unable to travel to Jerusalem.
• Though   it is an argument that cannot be disproven, it can also not be   proven. Indeed, researchers into heretical forms of Christianity   posit that the site may have been used by one such community,   and that the “hermits” might perhaps have been “heretics”,   and that they chose the site because of the presence of this Great   Pillar.
• In   the end, we do not know, and neither did the Germans in the 1930s.
• A series of excavations were organised in the 1930s, but provided   no proof for the pet theories of Teudt and Wiligut. Hence, very   much like the Quest for the Holy Grail, the Quest for the Holy   Irminsul became all about the quest itself, and not about the   final goal.
• Furthermore, seeing the site was so important for   Nazism has left a certain inhibition with some to either create   new theories on or involve the Irminsuls or the Externsteine;   it seems that both subjects are felt to be best left alone.

• Beginning in 1943, Martin Bormann set in motion a long-term plan to seed aspects of top secret Nazi technologies into the hands of the western Allies and the Soviet Union,
• laying the foundations for the Cold War, and allowing his planned postwar Nazi International maneuvering room to pursue its own political, economic, and research agendas.
• Keeping the best and most advanced of this Nazi technology, the Bell, in independent Nazi hands after the war, Bormann established the center of Nazi power and research in Argentina.
• Dr. Farrell outlines the basis of the Bell project in hyper-dimensional physics, and the three probable purposes of the project: to acquire a technology that would lead simultaneously to “free” energy, field propulsion, and the ultimate doomsday weapon.
• One aspect of this postwar research concerned Juan Perón’s secret “fusion” research with Nazi scientist, Dr. Ronald Richter in the early 1950s.
• Widely denounced at the time as a fraud in the world media, Dr. Farrell reexamines the Argentine commission’s report, plus Richter’s own Paperclip file from the American archives and shows that the Americans, while publicly denouncing him as a fraud, were secretly calling him a “mad genius working in the 1970s,” decades in advance of anyone else.
• Dr. Farrell argues that Richter’s strangely anomalous behavior during the Argentine Commission’s investigation was deliberately done to discredit the project and return it to the secrecy that its hidden Nazi sponsors wanted.
• But the real problem with Dr. Richter and his “fusion” research is that they are connected directly to the Bell project and to what Dr. Richter himself – in the early 1950s! – described as the ability to tap into the Zero Point energy.
• As Dr. Farrell will show, the most sensitive records about the project never fell into Argentina’s – or anyone else’s – hands after its closure by Perón.
• The implications are that some alternative energy and field propulsion technologies (and their horrendous weaponization potential) might be in the hands of a continuing postwar “Nazi International.”

  Joseph P. Farrell has a doctorate in patristics from the University of Oxford, and pursues research in physics, alternative history and science, and “strange stuff”. His book The Giza Death Star was published in the spring of 2002, and was his first venture into “alternative history and science”. All of Joseph’s books are about three themes and their inter-relationships: (1) off-the-books physics and secret research, (2) ancient esoteric doctrines and the hidden physics they contain, and (3) the use of the previous two to explain or reinterpret persisting mysteries in history down to our own day, particularly the extraordinary research of Nazi Germany. • The original cadre of the Waffen-SS came from the Freikorps and the Reichswehr along with various right-wing paramilitary formations. Formed at the instruction of Adolf Hitler in 1933, the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler was the first formation of what was to become the Waffen-SS. When the SA was rendered powerless in the Night of the Long Knives, many ex-SA men requested transfer to the SS, swelling its ranks and resulting in the formation of several new units including the SS-Verfügungstruppe, SS-VT (to become the SS Division Das Reich) and the SS-Totenkopfverbände, SS-TV, the concentration camp guard unit (to become the SS Division Totenkopf).
• The majority of the Waffen-SS men originally received second rate weapons and equipment with many formations receiving Czech and Austrian weapons and equipment. With the exception of a select few of the 'Germanic' SS Divisions, this policy was continued throughout the war. The majority of the best equipment went to the Heer's elite divisions (Panzergrenadier-Division Großdeutschland and Panzer-Lehr-Division)
• The premier Waffen-SS divisions began to receive standard equipment once they proved themselves in the Eastern front and were upgraded to panzergrenadier and later panzer divisions. The remainder of the SS Divisions made do with either standard or second rate equipment.
• Although it varied through divisions, in the early stages of the war, recruits had to be at least 5"11 tall, extremely fit, and also of Aryan appearance (though this policy would relax over the years). It was also generally required that they come from rural areas, as opposed to the cities -- the Wehrmacht were made up of men from urban backgrounds.[5]
• SS combat training consisted primarily of several months of intensive basic training with three objectives; physical fitness, small-arms proficiency and political indoctrination. The training was so challenging that two in three potentials failed to pass the course.[citation needed] After basic training, the recruits were sent to specialist schools (such as Panzertruppenschule I) where they received specific-to-trade training in their chosen combat arm. As the war progressed and replacements were required more frequently, the intensity of the training was relaxed somewhat.[citation needed] This was particularly true after the expansion of the Waffen-SS following the success of the SS-Panzerkorps at Kharkov.[citation needed]
  
• For officers, the focus was on leadership and combat command, usually at the SS-Junkerschule at Bad Tölz. The principle of Auftragstaktik which underpinned Wehrmacht and SS training is standard in all armies today, although the concept was invented by the Heer General Staff (and its precursors) rather than the SS. A strong emphasis was placed on creating a bond between the officers and men, and officer candidates were made to pass through basic training alongside the enlisted candidates. This created a mutual trust and respect between the officers and men, and meant that the relationship between these groups was very relaxed, unlike the Heer (German Army), where strict discipline and a policy of separation between the officers and enlisted men existed. In the Waffen-SS, it was not a requirement to salute officers and a more casual salute was adopted (the right arm raised vertically from the elbow - a relaxed version of the Heil salute. This salute is portrayed in many war films. Added to this, the practice of addressing a superior as Herr ("Mr.") was also forbidden, with everyone up to Himmler being addressed simply by their rank.
  
• During the war the Waffen-SS was presented as a multinational force protecting Europe from the terrible evils of Communism (see Black Edelweiss).
