• NATO warships entered the Black Sea on Thursday for what the alliance said were long-planned exercises and routine visits to ports in Romania and Bulgaria.
• The move is not linked to the tensions over Russia's invasion of Georgia, which lies on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, about 900 kilometers (550 miles) from the Romanian coast, said officials at NATO's military command in southern Belgium.

  • Oh.., of course not!
• Three warships — from Spain, Germany and Poland — sailed into the Black Sea on Thursday. They are due to be joined by a U.S. frigate, the USS Taylor, later this week.
• They are "conducting a pre-planned routine visit to the Black Sea region to interact and exercise with our NATO partners Romania and Bulgaria, which is an important feature of our routine planning," said Vice-Adm. Pim Bedet, deputy commander at allied maritime headquarters in Northwood, England.
• However, the move risks increasing tensions with Russia which has deployed ships from its Black Sea fleet to the Georgian coast.
• The NATO flotilla includes Spain's SPS Adm. Juan de Bourbon, Germany's FGS Luebeck and the Polish ship ORP General K Pulaski.
• Romanian and Bulgarian ships will join them for exercises during a three-week deployment which NATO says has been planned for over a year.

• Missile Defense in Europe = Russia Bait?

• The U.S. is expanding its controversial, and mostly untested, Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system into Poland and Czech Republic, provoking Russia into making thinly veiled threats.
• In the wake of the South Ossetia war, these threats have assumed a much more sinister edge than before.
• Phil Coyle, the Pentagon's former top weapons tester (pdf!), says it's all for nothing.
• "The system proposed for Poland and the Czech Republic doesn't exist, has never been tested, and has no demonstrated effectiveness to defend Europe or the U.S. under realistic operational conditions," Coyle contends in an exclusive conversation with DANGER ROOM.
• He says that even our existing missile defenses, installed in Alaska, couldn't stop more than one or two rudimentary missiles from, say, Iran.
• "For these reasons the U.S. BMD system proposed for Europe is causing strife with Russia for nothing."
• Ouch. But wait, there's more, Coyle says:
• You have to ask where might there be a short range missile threat from which Poland would need a defense? Russia?
• But Russia can overwhelm the most futuristic missile defenses we can imagine [with sheer numbers].
•  If the Ground-based Mid-course system proposed for Poland were effective against missiles launched from Iran, then it would also be effective against Russian missiles launched towards the U.S. This is something which Russia cannot accept.
• Iran is not reckless enough to attack Europe, and neither is North Korea
• There are no real world missile defense needs that are driving this system.
• Knowing the past history between Russia and Poland and the Czech Republic, if I were a citizen of Poland or the Czech Republic I'd be more concerned about the real threats from Russia than the illusory threat from Iran.

• Cold War tension rises as Putin talks of Black Sea confrontation

• A new Cold War between Russia and the West grew steadily closer yesterday after the Kremlin gave a warning about “direct confrontation” between American and Russian warships in the Black Sea.
• Dmitri Peskov, a spokesman for Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister, declared that Russia was taking “measures of precaution” against American and Nato naval ships.
• “Let’s hope we do not see any direct confrontation in that,” he said.
• Any attempt by countries in the West to isolate Russia would “definitely harm the economic interests of those states”, he said.

  • This statement is aimed at the rest of Europe; primarily the decadent "allies" of NATO.
• A day after the Kremlin said that it was ready to fight a new Cold War, both sides gave the impression that they were preparing for a protracted stand-off.
• Foreign ministers of the G7 leading industrialised nations condemned Russia’s excessive use of force and the decision to recognise the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, while the US and Russia shelved a key nuclear agreement that would have given the Americans access to Russian nuclear technologies and Russia help from the US in establishing an international nuclear fuel storage facility for spent fuel.
• David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, also flew to Ukraine to assemble the “widest possible coalition against Russian aggression”,
• while Georgia downgraded its diplomatic relations with Russia, recalling all but two of its diplomats from Moscow in protest at the continuing occupation of its country.
• Russia criticised the US for using naval ships to deliver aid to Georgia.
• The US Coast Guard cutter Dallas delivered supplies to the Georgian port of Batumi yesterday, three days after the guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul docked in the port.
• The US sailors were greeted with chants of “USA! USA!”
• By choosing Batumi, the US opted for a less confrontational move than docking at Poti, another Georgian port where Russian troops are dug in.
• The US may have also suspected that the Russians had mined the harbour at Poti, possibly one of the precautionary measures referred to by Mr Putin’s spokesman.
• General Anatoli Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the Russian General Staff, accused Nato of “ratcheting up tension” in the Black Sea. Mr Peskov said: “It’s not a common practice to deliver humanitarian aid using battleships.”
• The Russian rhetoric was matched in the US by Dick Cheney, the Vice-President, who will visit Georgia next week.
• He called the Russian occupation of Georgia an unjustified assault, and pledged to ensure the country’s territorial integrity.
• The G7 — Britain, the US, France, Canada, Germany, Italy and Japan — said in a statement released by the US State Department: “We deplore Russia’s excessive use of military force in Georgia and its continued occupation of parts of Georgia.”
• For now, US help has been confined to delivering aid to Georgia by sea and air, but with Russian troops and tanks still occupying parts of Georgia, US military planners are now openly considering how to rearm Georgia’s forces, which fought as allies of the US in Iraq.
• “Down the road we will be looking at what may be required to rebuild the Georgian military \ right now the mission of the United States military is to provide humanitarian assistance,” a Pentagon spokesman said.
• A former British ambassador to Tbilisi said that Nato might have to send troops to the region.
• Donald McLaren, who was Ambassador to Georgia from 2004 to July last year and is now retired, told the Today programme on Radio 4: “I think we shouldn’t be too complacent or too scared in a situation like this.”
• He suggested that a peacekeeping force made up of troops from the US, Britain, France, Germany and Russia should be sent to Georgia to replace the Russian units.
• If Moscow rejected such a proposal, he said, Nato had only two choices: “To give up and surrender and say to the Russians, ‘It’s your backyard, you’ve won’, or to put men on the ground to protect Georgia’s sovereignty and the east-west oil and gas pipeline from the Caspian and Central Asia.”
• The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said that there was no prospect of troops being deployed to Georgia.
• Nato diplomatic sources said that no one within the alliance was speaking about sending troops.
• “We have no mandate to act in the Caucasus,” a source said.
• Even the European Union, which is to hold a summit next month, has downgraded its most likely response to the Russian military presence in Georgia from deploying peacekeepers to sending observers.

• Masha Lipman, of the Moscow centre of the Carnegie Endowment, told Today that Russia was in a belligerent mood and that if the West sent a force into Georgia, the situation would escalate.

  • Yeah..well let one hair on an American sailor's head be touched and Russia is going to get a glimpse of America in a "belligerent mood."
• The Ministry of Defence has decided to postpone a military exercise in Georgia involving the Territorial Army and the Georgian Army. The exercise, planned for next month, was to help the Georgians with peacekeeping. The MoD said that the Georgian Defence Ministry had requested the delay because of the current situation.

• Russian bombers again cloud skies in Europe's far north

• In scenes reminiscent of the Cold War, Russian bombers have returned to the skies in Europe's far north after years of absence, putting NATO's jet fighters on alert once again.
• At the Bodoe airbase, above the Arctic circle, two F-16s are always on call, ready to take off in less than 15 minutes for stand-offs with surprise visitors from Norway's eastern neighbour.

• "We have noticed a clear rise in Russian aerial activity over the past year," said base air commander general Per Egil Rygg.

    "This has given us a lot more to do," he added.
• In 2006, Norwegian F-16s carried out 13 emergency take-offs to "identify", as the military jargon goes, 14 Russian planes.
• A year later, the number of emergency take-offs leapt to 47, with a whopping 88 Russian planes "identified".
• The increase appears to be largely due to a decision by then-president Vladimir Putin to relaunch strategic bomber flights "on a permanent basis".
• Despite Russian troops being tied up in the Georgian conflict, the Norwegian air force says there has been no slowdown in the number of Russian bombers spotted.

• To keep up with the Russian planes, two fighter pilots and four mechanics remain on high alert at the Bodoe base 24 hours a day.

    Stationed in a small building near two shelters each housing an F16, one pilot slumbers fully-dressed while the other stands guard, waiting for a bright-red telephone to ring.
• As soon as NATO's Combined Air Operations Centre in Denmark gives the order, the pilot on guard sounds the alarm and the six men make a dash for the two jets on call, which make it into the air just minutes later.
• Only after they are airborne do the pilots receive their mission orders.

• While such manoeuvres and the frequent drone of the Russian bombers may provoke Cold War flashbacks in Bodoe, most airmen here say they are not too concerned.

    -- 'We make sure to mark our territory' --

    "They (the Russian planes) remain in international air space at all times without violating Norway's sovereignty. They have every right to do this," Rygg pointed out.

    "We make sure to mark our territory, but this doesn't really worry us," he added.
• The reappearance of the Tu-95 "Bear" and Tu-160 "Blackjack" bombers, it says, is primarily a sign that Moscow has gained more budgetary wiggle-room, enabling it to carry out more training missions.
• The government in Oslo is also rather laid-back.
• While Norway plays down the notion that the Russian flights are a muscle-flexing demonstration, other countries have had a hard time seeing purely coincidence when Russian bombers last year for instance stroked the outer limits of Dutch airspace when the Netherlands was hosting an important NATO meeting.
• Or when they, also in 2007, hovered near British airspace at the height of the tensions between London and Moscow.
• Located just some 600 kilometres (373 miles) from the Russian border, Bodoe has always been a strategic geopolitical location for the United States and its allies, something the town's aviation museum is quick to point out.

• The museum, located just a stone's throw from the airbase, is home to a rare specimen of the same American U2 spy plane as the one shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960 during a secret mission that had been scheduled to end in the small Norwegian town.

    The Cold War tensions of that era today appear to have dissipated at the airbase, where smiling guards laxly inspect visitors before letting them out to the concrete shelters camouflaged by thick grass that house close to 40 F-16s.
• A good-natured 31-year-old captain, who asks to remain anonymous, explains that he is one of the fighter pilots who is regularly sent up to face-off with the Russians.
• "We avoid any kind of provocation," he insists.

• "We come from the back and we keep our distance all the time, no less than 500 feet (152 metres) from them. They proceed with their mission normally. They don't do anything special just because we're there," he adds.

    Unlike in one of his favorite films, "Top Gun", which he has seen at least 50 times, there are no insulting gestures or provocative moves during the high-altitude encounters, the captain said.

    "They take pictures and we take pictures. Sometimes we even wave at each other," he said.

• Out of Algeria, French generals organized a Public Salvation Committee which pressured the Parisian civilian authorities to vote full powers to General de Gaulle without having had to use force.
• In a first phase, he attempted to deal with the colonial contradiction by granting to the overseas territories a large autonomy within the French Union.
• Yet, Charles de Gaulle was not the pawn the Anglo-Saxons had believed they could manipulate.
• But it was already too late to save the French empire; the colonized people didn’t believe any longer in the promises of the Metropolitan France and demanded their independence. • Even though asserting his belonging to the Atlantic camp, he questions the Anglo-Saxon leadership. • Simultaneously, de Gaulle consolidated the power of France by endowing it with a military industrial-complex including a nuclear deterrent and guarantying its energy provisions.
• He conveniently distanced the encumbering Corsicans of his entourage by entrusting them with foreign missions. Thus, Étienne Léandri became a leader of the ELF group (today Total), while Charles Pasqua the trusted man of the Francophone heads of State in Africa.
• Conscious that he could not defy the Anglo-Saxons on all fronts at the same time, De Gaulle allied himself to the Rothschild family, choosing as Prime Minister, Georges Pompidou, who was the fondé de pouvoir of the bank.

• Junior’s responsibilities at the CIA are unknown, but it is clear that he plays an important role.
• During that same period, Nicolas Sarkozy adheres to the Gaullist party coming into frequent contact with Charles Pasqua, who was not only a national leader then, but also the head of the party’s Haut de Seine department section.
• Having finished Law School in 1982 and joined the Barr association, Nicolas Sarkozy married the niece of Achille Peretti. His best man was Charles Pasqua.
• As a lawyer, Sarkozy defended the interests of his mentors Corsican friends. He bought a property on the Island of Beauty, in Vico, and went as far as envisaging to make his name more “Corsican” by replacing the “y” by an “i”: Sarkozi.
• The next year, he was elected Mayor of Neuilly sur Seine in replacement of his uncle in law, Achille Peretti, thundered by a heart attack.
• However, it was not long before Nicolas Sarkozy betrayed his wife, and since 1984, he had a secret liaison with Cecilia, the wife of the most famous entertainer of French television at that time, Jacques Martin, whom he had met while celebrating their marriage, a function he exerted being mayor of Neuilly.
• That double life lasted five years, before the lovers decided to quit their respective couples in order to build a new home.
• In 1992, Nicolas was best man in the marriage of Jacques Chirac’s daughter, Claude, with an editorialist of Le Figaro.
• He couldn’t refrain himself from seducing Claude and having a short liaison with her, while officially living with Cecilia.
• The cuckold husband committed suicide by absorbing drugs. The break was brutal and without pardon between the Chirac’s and Nicolas Sarkozy.
• In 1993, the left lost the legislative elections. President François Mitterrand refused to resign and entered into cohabitation with a right wing Prime Minister.
• Jacques Chirac who ambitioned the presidency, and was thinking at that point of constituting, with Edoaurd Balladur, a couple comparable to that of De Gaulle and Pompidou, refused to be Prime minister and left his post to his “30 year long friend”, Edouard Balladur.
• In spite of his sulphurous past, Charles Pasqua became Interior Minister. While keeping high hand over Moroccan marijuana trade, he took advantage of his situation to legalize his other activities taking control of casinos, gambling and horse races in francophone Africa.

• He wove ties with Saudi Arabia and Israel and became an officer of honour to the Mossad. Nicolas Sarkozy on his part, became minister of Budget and spokesman for the government.
• In Washington, Frank Wisner, Jr. became the successor of Paul Wolfowitz as head of the Political Planning department of the Department of Defense. Nobody noticed at that time the ties to the spokesman of the French government.

• The new element was that Charles Pasqua and along with him, the young Nicolas Sarkozy, betray Jacques Chirac in order to join the Rothschild current.

• Mayhem breaks out. The conflict will reach a climax in 1995 when Edouard Balladur ran for president, against his former friend, Jacques Chirac, and was beaten. Foremost, following instructions from London and Washington, the Balladur government opened negotiations for membership status to the European Union and NATO to States of Central and Eastern Europe who had freed from Soviet control.
• Havoc reigns then in the Gaullist party where the friends of yesterday are ready to kill themselves today. To be able to finance his electoral campaign, Edouard Balladur attempts to grab the secret slush fund of the Gaullist party, hidden in the double deckered accounting of the books of the oil group ELF.
• The ride through the desert

• Through out his first mandate, Jacques Chirac keeps Nicolas Sarkozy at arms distance. The man was discrete during his ride through the desert. Discretely, however, he continued to weave ties to the financial circles.

   

  In 1996, finally succeeding to bring to conclusion an endless divorce procedure, Nicolas Sarkozy marries Cecilia. Two billionaires were their best men, Martin Bouygues and Bernard Arnaud (the richest man of the country).
• The final act
• Way before the Iraqi crisis, Frank Wisner Jr. and his colleagues at the CIA plan the destruction of the Gaullist current and the coming to power of Nicolas Sarkozy.
• They move in three phases: first, the elimination of the leadership of the Gaullist party and the take over of the party apparatus, then the elimination of his main right wing rival and the securing the nomination to the presidential election for the Gaullist party; finally, the elimination of any serious challenger on the left to make sure that Nicolas would win the presidential election.
• During years, posthumous revelations by a real estate dealer kept the media on their toes.
• Before dying from a terminal disease, for reasons which remain unknown, he decided to video tape his confessions and for reasons which are even more obscure, the “cassette” landed in the hands of a Socialist party leader, Dominique Strauss Kahn, who addressed it indirectly to the media.

• The bestowal of one of the world's top accolades on a president less than nine months in office, who has yet to score a major foreign policy success, was greeted with gasps of astonishment from journalists at the announcement in Oslo.
• Obama expressed surprise at winning the award, saying he felt humbled and unworthy of being counted in the company of the "transformative figures" of history who had won it.

• "I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century.

• But critics called the Nobel committee's decision premature, given that Obama so far has made little tangible headway as he grapples with challenges ranging from the war in Afghanistan and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to nuclear standoffs with Iran and North Korea.

• "It would be wonderful if I could think why he won," said Claire Sprague, 82, a retired English professor as she walked her dog in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. "They wanted to give him an honor I guess, but I can't think what for."

• America's stunning decline is awakening a beast.

• Numerous Bible prophecies spotlight a system of successive world-ruling Gentile kingdoms that culminate in the return of Jesus Christ. These successive “beasts,” as they are called, are discussed throughout the Bible, but especially in four prophetic chapters: Daniel 2 and 7, and Revelation 13 and 17.
• Daniel 2 describes four successive world-ruling empires: the Chaldean Empire, followed by Medo-Persia, then Greco-Macedonia, and finally the Roman Empire.
• These four kingdoms were prophesied to continue in succession right up to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
• In Daniel 7, the prophet describes four beasts, again representing four Gentile kingdoms, but with special emphasis on the fourth-the Roman Empire.
• This beast has 10 horns, which “are ten kings that shall arise” out of, or after, the Roman Empire (verse 24).
• Daniel also describes a “little horn” which grew among the 10 horns and uprooted the first three (verse 8).
• The meaning of this prophecy is made plain in the book of Revelation.
• Revelation 13 only discusses one beast-representing the fourth and final kingdom, the Roman Empire. This beast had seven heads and ten horns, one head of which received a deadly wound.
• The Roman Empire existed from 31 B.C. to A.D. 476, at which point the kingdom was crushed.
• But its deadly wound was healed just as John prophesied (verse 3).
• There were to be 10 resurrections to come out of that Roman Empire (just as Daniel said), the first three of which were uprooted by the “little horn”-implying that they were not altogether Roman, but nevertheless ruled within the ancient Roman territory after the empire collapsed. And that's what happened.
• Three barbaric tribes did rule in the region before Justinian restored the Roman Empire in A.D. 554 and effectively “healed” the deadly wound.
• In this chapter, once again John describes a beast with seven heads, but none of these heads is wounded.
• Revelation 17 fills in the remaining details.
• This time a woman, which throughout the Bible symbolizes a church, is riding the beast. She is called a whore in verse 1, and therefore symbolizes a great false church that rides, or heavily influences, this geopolitical beast.
• When Justinian recognized the supremacy of the pope in 554, the Roman Empire was revived. And because of its close association with the Vatican, it eventually assumed the name Holy Roman Empire.
• Comparing the historical record with these prophecies makes the meaning undeniably clear.
• Counting Justinian's empire, there have been six major, historically documented resurrections of the so-called Holy Roman Empire-all of which have been heavily influenced, and in some cases dominated, by the Vatican.
• The seventh prophesied empire is now forming in the heart of Europe.
• An Unstable Mixture
• Those who scoff at the thought of Europe's disparate group of social democracies ever becoming the world's next superpower fail to realize that this is exactly how God said it would happen!
• Daniel 2 describes the final resurrection of the Roman Empire as being an unstable mixture of iron and clay.
• And we are now in the early stages of economic emergency that will bring these many nations together as the world's next superpower.
• The Bible says they will receive their power for “one hour with the beast”-a period that only lasts for about 2½ years. Though short-lived, this awakening beast will display all of the iron-like strength and force of its Roman predecessors.
• The stunning demise of the United States as the world's lone superpower is only hastening along these prophetic realities.
• As Charles Krauthammer explains in his latest essay, Washington's radical swing left has set the United States “on course for decline.”
• In fact, the United States has been on this course for some time now-long before President Obama moved into the White House. But it is true that this radical administration is helping to accelerate America's demise as a world power.
• The new liberalism, as Krauthammer calls it, envisions a much weaker, less dominant America that plays on a level field with every other nation.
• And as it happens, this abandonment of international primacy abroad perfectly complements the massive expansion of Euro-style domestic programs at home.
• “At a time when hundreds of billions of dollars are being lavished on stimulus and other appropriations in an endless array of domestic programs, the defense budget is practically frozen,” he writes.
• The Europeans, on the other hand, “made the choice long ago to devote their resources to a vast welfare state. Their expenditures on defense are minimal, as are their consequent military capacities.”
• They've been able to afford their social democracies, Krauthammer explains, so long as America has been able to police the world.
• But who will stand guard for America if we abandon our military might in favor of massive domestic expenditures, Krauthammer wonders.
• Of equal concern, prophetically speaking, what will Europe-the world's largest economy-do once it realizes that America no longer has its back?
• Prophecy tells!
• As soon as that motley mix of iron and clay coalesces together in support of its prophesied emperor, working in cahoots with the church in Rome, a beast will reawaken in the heart of Europe and turn its attention outward, breaking in pieces “all things,” Daniel prophesied
• This will be the seventh and final resurrection of the “Holy” Roman Empire.

• MILAN (Reuters Life!) - Milan will sweep aside its Roman and Papal heritage this weekend to celebrate Samhain, popularly regarded as the Celtic New Year, at a festival which highlights Italy's awakened interest in its pagan past.
• The city's Sforzesco Castle will host crafts like weaving, coining money and making chain mail to a backdrop of music from Italy, Ireland, Scotland and Spain.
• More than 100,000 visitors are expected to come to see Celtic warriors clash in battle.
• The focus is strictly cultural heritage, not religion, said Emanuela Magni, co-organizer of the event.
• "It teaches how even with the passage of time, there are some concepts of the universe that have endured here," Magni said, noting that the Celtic holy tradition of Samhain was a precursor to holidays like All Saints Day and All Souls Day.
• But as Italy uncovers its pre-Christian roots, it is also awakening pagan practice.
• "Indeed something is afoot here quietly but determinedly, and it appears to be a movement," wrote American religious studies researcher Francesca Howell, in a paper published last month by the international journal of pagan studies, Pomegranate.
• Italy has deep roots in witchcraft, or "stregoneria," Howell said in an interview.
• But its current pagan movement echoes earlier trends in the British Isles and America. Italy's pagans have coalesced around movements like feminism and environmentalism.
• "It truly is a different cup of tea, or different cauldron of herbs, if you will," she said.
• Melwyn, a 23-year-old Milanese secretary who gave only her Celtic name, fits the movement's demographics.
• A Celtic re-enactor, she read about Wicca as a teenager and discovered practitioners at the Samhain festival four years ago.
• "A lot of people are close to Wicca without knowing it, especially re-enactors" she said. "They believe in it but don't acknowledge it."
• Organizers say numbers are elusive, but using sources like mailing lists, event registration and journal subscriptions, they place their ranks at between 2,000 and 10,000.
• The founder of Milan's Circle of the Crossroads, Davide Marre, remembers when his group numbered "four cats," an expression for virtually nobody.
• Six years later, he has 200 members, with conferences, study groups, a magazine, a book, even a monthly bar fest called the Witches' Café.

• Given Italy's past, Marre said he is not surprised by the revival. "Italy is the land of the gods," he said.

• The European Commission has cited 20 of the EU’s 27 member nations for unacceptable budget deficits.
• The year 2010 promises to be a rocky one for the world’s largest trading bloc, the European Union.
• The latest shock comes from Greece, having revised its former deficit estimate for 2009 from 3.7% of gross domestic product to between 10 and 12%. That estimate is between three and four times the EU’s self-imposed limit of a permissible 3% maximum of GDP for EU economies.
  
• EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia warns about the risks the EU financial system is facing. (John Thys/ AFP/ Getty)
• Germany and France, the largest economies within the EU, have forecast 2009 budget deficit estimates of 3.7% and 8.2% respectively.
• It is interesting to note that Germany, the prime mover for the imposition of the EU’s Stability and Growth Pact which limits EU budget deficits to that 3% maximum, has been one of the most consistent offenders, for years having posted deficits consistently above that figure.
• At the other end of the scale – the smaller and weaker economies within the EU – concerns run even deeper. The Guardian reported that the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has warned, “The countries of Central and Eastern Europe will enjoy only a ‘fragile and patchy’ economic recovery in 2010 and the region remains vulnerable to the sort of banking crises that hit Latvia this month” (October 15).
• Latvia, which narrowly avoided complete financial meltdown a week ago, is estimating its 2009 budget deficit will reach a whopping 10%!
• During a conference on banking regulation in Brussels this month, Nobel prize winner in economics Joseph Stiglitz observed that “the financial crisis is forcing the EU to re-examine its cornerstone policy area – the single market” (EUobserver, October 12).
• “The current solution,” Stiglitz said, “which is to put undue burdens on those particular countries that followed the model of deregulation, is one that we might want to question.”
• That is tantamount to questioning the very foundational economic policy upon which the European Union is founded.
• EUobserver further reported that “The single market theme was later picked up by the EU’s economy commissioner, Joaquin Almunia, who warned that differences in financial regulation across the EU pose a dangerous threat to the bloc’s internal market. … Mr. Almunia said it was vital that the EU iron out its own in-house discrepancies or risk contagion to the real economy” (ibid.).
• The financial and economic storm gathering in Europe is all grist for the mill to the elites who are currently busy developing the rules and regulations which, via the global regulatory authority granted to the EU-contrived Financial Stability Board (FSB), will soon impose its measures, not just on Europe, but on the world’s 20 leading economies.
• That call will be music to the ears of German-Catholic elites who are behind the push for global regulation by the fsb.
• The greater the impending economic crisis, the louder the call will come for global financial and economic regulation.
• Each call for tighter financial and economic regulation simply brings us closer to the realization of their imperial vision of Europe – in reality, the prophesied seventh, and final, resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire. (Revelation 13:16-17).

• The mother of a six-year-old boy who was subjected to what a judge described  as “truly appalling” abuse from a man she had regarded as a close friend  said yesterday that her child had been “shaped and moulded” for life by the  experience.
• Welcoming the life sentences passed on James Rennie and Neil Strachan, the  woman said that she had moved on from feelings of anger.
• “My focus is about  my son, about how to support him and loving him for who he is. And who he is  now has been shaped and moulded by what’s gone on.”
• Rennie 38, the former chief executive of a gay youth organisation, was  responsible for “a colossal breach of trust”, Lord Bannatyne said at the  High Court in Edinburgh.

  James Rennie is led into Edinburgh High Court, where he was sentenced to life in jail
• He had abused the boy — identified as Child F —  almost from birth to the age of four years.
• He distributed images and films  of his attacks to a gang of seven other men.
• Strachan, 41, the only one of the gang with previous convictions for offences  against children, was shown in background reports to display evidence of a  psychopathic personality.
• One image that showed him abusing a baby left in  his care displayed all his basest instincts, the judge said.
• “By its very  nature what is shown in that photograph is utterly appalling and would shock  to the core any right-minded person who has had to see it.”
• Strachan was ordered to spend a minimum of 16 years in prison, while Rennie  was sentenced to a minimum of 13 years.
• Nearly 125,000 indecent images were seized during an 18-month police  investigation, codenamed Operation Algebra.
• Six men were jailed in June for  their involvement in the gang. All were respected members of the community,  as was Rennie, and they included a civil servant, a bank clerk and a church  bell-ringer.
• The nine-week trial in the spring invoked conspiracy laws for the first time  in a sexual offences case in Scotland, a precedent that prosecutors hope  will have a profound effect on curtailing the making and distribution of  images of child abuse by paedophiles.

• Significant operations are continuing in central Scotland, Sussex, the  Netherlands and the United States.
• Strachan, convicted of eight charges in total, was also found guilty of  repeatedly touching a six-year-old boy indecently.
• The jury found Rennie  guilty of 14 charges, including one of procuring his best friend’s child for  other men, an offer that Strachan took up.
• The men — along with Ross Webber, 27, from North Berwick, Craig Boath, 24 from  Dundee and John Milligan, 40, from Glasgow — were also found guilty of  conspiring to gain access to a child or children to commit abuse.
• After sentencing the mother of an 18-month-old boy abused by Strachan said  that she would never be able to forgive him. “The anguish I feel towards Mr  Strachan is indescribable,” she said.
• “I feel that no matter what punishment is given to Mr Strachan, it will never  be able to compensate for the hurt, devastation and great deal of stress  brought to me and my family.”
• Webber, Boath, and Milligan, along with Neil Campbell, 46, and John Murphy,  44, both from Glasgow, were sentenced to a total of 43 years in jail in June  for their involvement in the paedophile ring.

• Apart from his fondness for haikus, and his giggle-inducing name, it's hard to think of anything interesting to say about Herman Van Rompuy, the first president of the European Council.
• In fact, the whole point of the Belgian's election was the avoidance of color and interest: they were looking for a low-profile eurocrat with a record of patiently building relationships, one whose focus was internal rather than external.
• As the Economist points out: "For all his merits, Mr Van Rompuy’s main experience of an international dispute as prime minister is the Belgo-Dutch row over the dredging of the River Scheldt."
• But one interesting thing about Mr Van Rompuy is his Catholicism, about which he makes no bones.
• He was educated (drumroll, s'il vous plaît) by Jesuits in Brussels, went onto the Catholic University of Leuven, and in the 1980s wrote a book about Christendom as a modern idea.
• He is, in short, a bearer of the torch first lit by the Catholic architects of European unity-- De Gasperi, Schuman, Adenauer -- who, like Van Rompuy, were all Christian Democrats for whom faith and Europe went together.
• In 2004, when he was an opposition deputy, Van Rompuy objected to Turkey joining the EU in terms very similar to those used by the then Cardinal Ratzinger (h/t to Tom Heneghan at Reuters, who puts the two quotes side by side):
• namely that Turkey's Islamic character would dilute the Christian character of the EU.
• That kind of talk makes me queasy. But I am impressed by a speech (in French) Van Rompuy gave on Caritas in Veritate which he carries on his website.
• It shows a sophisticated grasp of Catholic social doctrine.
• Dull he may be, but I for one am delighted that at the heart of the European Union is a politician who can write (my trans):
• According to [Catholic] social doctrine, the political community is at the service of the civil society from which it is born.
• Civil society represents the sum total of the goods, cultural or relational, which are relatively independent of politics and the economy.
• The state should make sure that the legal framework allows the social actors (societies, associations, organisations, and so on) to carry out their activities in total freedom; it should be ready to intervene, only if needed and in conformity with the principle of subsidiarity, in order that the interaction between freedom of association and the democratic way leads in the direction of the common good."

• Denmark approves new police powers ahead of Copenhagen

   Controversial legislation gives police sweeping powers of 'pre-emptive' arrest and extends custodial sentences for acts of civil disobedience.
• The Danish parliament today passed legislation which will give police sweeping powers of "pre-emptive" arrest and extend custodial sentences for acts of civil disobedience.
• The "deeply worrying" law comes ahead of the UN climate talks which start on 7 December and are expected to attract thousands of activists from next week.
• Under the new powers, Danish police will be able to detain people for up to 12 hours whom they suspect might break the law in the near future.
• Protesters could also be jailed for 40 days under the hurriedly drafted legislation dubbed by activists as the "turmoil and riot" law. The law was first announced on 18 October.
• The Danish ministry of justice said that the new powers of "pre-emptive" detention would increase from 6 to 12 hours and apply to international activists.
• If protesters are charged with hindering the police, the penalty will increase from a fine to 40 days in prison.
• Protesters can also be fined an increased amount of 5,000 krona (671 Euros) for breach of the peace, disorderly behaviour and remaining after the police have broken up a demonstration.
• The Danish police also separately issued a statement in August (pdf) applying new rules and regulations for protests at the climate conference,
• warning that "gatherings that may disturb the public order must not take place".
• Earlier this month, the Guardian published a letter by environmental activists that described the new law as "deeply worrying" and called for the Danish government to uphold their right to legitimate protest.
• Tannie Nyboe, a spokewoman from campaigning group Climate Justice Action in Denmark, said the new law was designed to control civil disobedience during the summit.
• "These laws are a big restraint in people's freedom of speech and it will increase the police repression for anyone coming to Copenhagen to protest.
• Denmark normally boasts of how open and democratic a country we are. With this law we can't boast about this anymore.
• "It will increase the repression of any protester or activist coming to Copenhagen. This law creates an image of anyone concerned about climate change being a criminal, which will of course also influence the general treatment of any activist who comes into contact with the police or other authorities."
• A Danish justice ministry confirmed that the laws had been passed today and would come into effect before the climate conference starts on 7 December.

• EU Playing With Fire On Jerusalem

• An angry Netanyahu administration warned the European Union this week that it is playing with fire if it goes ahead next week with plans to adopt a resolution calling for east Jerusalem to be the capital of a future independent Palestinian state.
• “The process being led by Sweden harms the European Union’s ability to take part as a significant mediator in the political process between Israel and the Palestinians,” said a statement Tuesday by Israel’s Foreign Ministry.
• The proposed resolution is expected to be approved during a two-day meeting beginning Monday of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
• The meeting will focus on the Middle East peace process, and this week the Israeli newspaper Haaretz printed a copy of the draft resolution.
• The meeting is one of the EU’s first acts under the Lisbon reform treaty that took effect Tuesday after its ratification by all 27 member states.
• It is intended in part to give the EU a greater role on the world stage and provide for a more consistent and effective foreign policy after years of a presidency that rotated among members.
• “It’s a way to inaugurate a new era in foreign affairs of the EU,” said Alfred Tovias, a professor of international relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
• “It will give the EU new international status by making this important declaration of foreign policy.”
• But Tovias said he believes Israel is making a mistake by “reacting hysterically” to the proposed resolution.
• “It is badly advised to make such a fuss because if you pay attention to what the EU is saying, it is that the capital of a Palestinian state should be in east Jerusalem — but they don’t say where that is,” he explained. “And in my opinion they will not say it, because it is up to the parties to say.”
• Tovias pointed out that not even Israelis are in agreement about the boundary between east and west Jerusalem.
• “Some say it is Jerusalem before June 5, 1967, others say it is simply Abu Dis,” he said, referring to a Palestinian village east of the Jerusalem municipal border.
• Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Blidt, whose country took over the presidency of the EU in July, is pushing the resolution.
• Tovias said Blidt is “considered a friend of Israel. ...He could have been one of the two top leaders of Europe, which means the declaration has a lot of weight. Israel is obliged to take this into consideration.”
• But Dore Gold, president of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and a former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, said he believes that any EU initiative “to prejudge the outcome of future negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians by determining the status of Jerusalem would undercut the entire peace process ... [and] raise serious doubts about any European role” in the peace process.
• “The position of the State of Israel as enunciated by Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu is that Jerusalem must remain united under Israeli sovereignty,” he pointed out.
• “Israel is not about to turn over the holy sites of Judaism, Christianity or Islam to the uncertainty of Palestinian rule.”
• Gold pointed out that under a treaty signed by then Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin and Jordan’s King Hussein, Jordan is to administer the Muslim shrines on the Temple Mount.
• Asked how a Palestinian state in eastern areas of Jerusalem that were always Arab would adversely impact Israel, Gold replied: “The Palestinian goal in any diplomacy over Jerusalem will be the Temple Mount and not some innocuous villages on the outskirts of Jerusalem.”
• “The eastern part of Jerusalem is like a checkerboard with black and white squares and you can’t assign different sovereignty on the basis of ethnic distribution,” he continued.
• “There are Israelis who make the argument that they don’t drive in east Jerusalem, therefore what do they care [about it]. But that’s like saying you don’t drive to 135th Street and Broadway [in Manhattan] — traffic patterns don’t determine sovereignty.”
• The draft EU resolution reportedly expresses concern over the inability to renew peace talks and says the goal of the talks is “an independent, democratic, contiguous and viable state of Palestine, comprising the West Bank and Gaza and with East Jerusalem as its capital. ...
• If there is to be a genuine peace, a way must be found to resolve the status of Jerusalem as the capital of two states.”
• Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman flew to Europe this week for more than 20 meetings with European leaders to explain that Israel has taken steps to prove its interest in resuming peace talks. Among the steps is a 10-month freeze on settlement construction in the West Bank.
• The Israeli Foreign Ministry said Lieberman would tell European leaders that the Palestinians are “not interested in negotiating with Israel, and their stated desire to achieve an agreement with Israel is mere lip service.”
• But Yossi Alpher, an Israeli political analyst and co-editor of the Israeli-Palestinian Web site BitterLemons.org, countered that without east Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state, “there will be no peace process.
• If Israel is not pressured into allowing it, there cannot be a two-state solution” that both sides say they want.
• “It is clear that Netanyahu is not prepared to move on this at all,” he said. “You have Netanyahu defiantly refusing to take any action to stop the building of neighborhoods for Jews in east Jerusalem, geographically cutting off the [future] capital of the Palestinians. ... His position invites this pressure.”
• In peace talks, Alpher said, arrangements can be made so that Jerusalem is not divided “if people live peacefully with one another.”
• Alpher said he does not believe the EU action will bring the two sides back to the bargaining table.
  “The process will only move if there is concerted American pressure on this particular issue,” Alpher said.
