On November 21, 2004, a huge oil spill occured in Newfoundland, Canada. The operator of theTerra Nova is Petro Canada. The oil spill occured because of an equipment malfunction. An estimated 170,000 litres of oil flowed into the ocean.
Terra Nova is subject to the Canada-Newfoundland Atlantic Accord Implementation Act, 1987. Oil spills are covered by the act.
Oil spills are exempted from the Fisheries Act.
Pollution caused by offshore oil and gas extraction is exempted from the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (122 (1) j
