During the late 1880s, many artists turned against the Impressionist style to create a new focus on their own feeling and spirit, and these artists moved in Post-Impressionism, a style that continued into the 1920s. Artist were still interested in color and form but found new ways to express it in their work. Paintings appeared flatter, artists were less concerned with how light reflected on objects, and shapes and forms were more solid. The Post Impressionists used a more simplified palette, a thicker application of paint, a heavy and expressive line, and reduced forms to basic shapes. They sought to portray how the human mind understood the world not how they saw it.
