Comparing Hospitals
This brief informative overview article: “Can you find the 'best' hospital for you?” by Nadia Kounang (CNN Health 3/3/2015) mentions Consumers Reports (subscription), US News & World Reports, Health Grades, and Leapfrog.
For those of you not in Central Maryland, the Leapfrog Group (http://www.hospitalsafetyscore.org/) "grades hospitals on how safe they keep their patients from errors." Unfortunately, Maryland hospitals are not included. Maryland hospitals are not required by the state to report the information Leapfrog uses to compile their scores. If you get questions about hospitals in border states or DC, take a look at the Leapfrog site!
Maryland hospitals are included in Hospital Compare (http://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/search.html) from Medicare.
Just for Fun
FreeMd.com’s (http://www.freemd.com/) purpose is to empower consumers “to make safer decisions on when and where to access care.” This website has a virtual doctor ask you questions about your symptoms, and then makes recommendations about if you should call your doctor, go to an urgent care center, make a doctor’s appointment or go to the ER. MedlinePlus links to some of their interviews. The software behind FreeMd.com is used by several health care providers and insurance companies, including the University of Central Florida Student Health Services.
Additional Sites of Note
Best Buy Drugs is a public education project. It will help you talk to your doctor about prescription drugs, and find the most effective and safe drugs that also give you the best value for your health care dollar.
