VoiceXML, or VXML, is a markup language like HTML. The difference: HTML is rendered by your Web browser to format content and user-input forms; VoiceXML is rendered by a voice browser. Your application can speak to the user via synthesized speech or by pre-recorded audio files. Your software can receive input from the user via speech or by the tones from their telephone keypad. If you've ever built a Web application, you're ready to get started with your phone application.

The Incutio XML-RPC library (IXR) is designed primarily for ease of use. It incorporates both client and server classes, and is designed to hide as much of the workings of XML-RPC from the user as possible. A key feature of the library is automatic type conversion from PHP types to XML-RPC types and vice versa. This should enable developers to write web services with very little knowledge of the underlying XML-RPC standard.

As you type a word in the textbox, a javascript event fires and a HTTP GET request to the ASPX page. The response from the ASPX page is simply displayed in a div tag under the textbox. The page is not refreshed/reloaded for every keystroke as everything is done by the javascript in the page. The main javascript object that allows us to do this is XMLHttpRequest. You could read about it from Apple's developer site here . This is supported by IE 5.0 +, Mozilla 1.0 + and Apple's own Safari 1.2 + .

InfoQ has released a video of Twitter's Kevin Weil speaking at Strange Loop earlier this year on how the company uses NoSQL. Weil is quick to point out that Twitter is heavily dependent on MySQL. However, Twitter does employ NoSQL solutions for many purposes for which MySQL isn't ideal. According to Weil, Twitter users generate 12 terrabytes of data a day - about four petabytes per year. And that amount is multiplying every year. Read on for our notes on Weil's talk.
