  • Level of development and experience play a role too!
• we use our voices to emphasize critical information. We use variance in loudness, pitch, length, and accent to punctuate sentence structure and instill speech with emphasis and nuance

• • I don't think the peaceful music and the helicopter go together very well. It makes dissonance in my cortices!

  • Will technology just become a routine part of literacy? I guess it already has, with computers being nearly necessary for daily life. I think, though, that we will never lose the print-reading modality and necessity.

• In theory this use of digital senses could lead  to synthetic vision with truly visual sensations ("qualia") through crossmodal sensory integration

  • This is weird, but it claims to use the plasticity of sensory input areas in the brain. I don't know if it would really create "visual" mental images, but I listened to a demo. It matched soundwave frequency patterns to objects in the picture. When they were taken away, the frequencies changed ever so slightly.

  • And how do they calculate that figure?
• each participant is asked to gather   8-10 pictures that reflect their thoughts and feelings about the research   topic.

  • for a ZMET study--they find out what people think about products by the pictures they pick!
• Using techniques adapted from psychotherapy, cognitive neuroscience,   psychology, and sociology, interviewers take participants through   a series of exercises designed to reveal the fundamental feelings   and beliefs that drive their actions.
• At   the conclusion of the interview, an associate trained in digital imagery   helps participants to create a single collage-like computer image   that summarizes their thoughts and feelings about the subject.

  • So the interviewer uses metaphors and relations the subject makes to make a picture summary of their thoughts. What a fascinating way to combine psychology with, well, marketing. This process is good for noting how to express something in images, but kind of labor intensive. I wonder what implications this has for ads? I don't like psych being used quite so avidly...
