Ancestry, the largest online library of family history information, available free from the Peoples Network PCs in Lancashire Archives and Libraries. The collection includes Census Records, Birth Marriage and Death Indexes, Military records, Immigration and Emigration, and many more public records from the UK and around the world. It is constantly updated and enlarged. Ancestry create their own indexes, so you may be able to find records that were missing on other websites.
Only available free in Libraries, Find My Past is an easy to use website with hundreds of sets of public records from England, Wales and Scotland going back to 1200 and they are constantly adding more. The collection includes Census records, Parish registers, Occupational records, Travel and migration, and many more. Find My Past do their own indexing, so you may be able to find records that were missing on other websites.

Family Search is the largest site to offer free access to records from old Censuses, Birth registers, etc. All the records here were compiled from the work of a community of researchers (the Mormon Church) looking for individual family trees.

Genuki the UK and Ireland Genealogy website doesn't hold records but contains a vast amount of free historical information that will help you to find all the records you need from anywhere within the country.

UK BMD Birth, Marriage and Death certificates aren't available to view online, but indexes of them are. These will provide you with some basic information you need to obtain a copy certificate.
