Unpacking Common Core Standards
Assessment
Mississippi is a member state in the Partnershiop for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), the organization responsible for developing the next generation assessments which will be used to assess Common Core Standards in English and math. The site provides a wealth of resources for assessment and teaching for common core standards.
In this section of the PARCC website, sample items are provided for English and Math at a variety of grade levels.
PARCC releases the Assessment Blueprints and Test Specifications for ELA and Math. This collection of documents will help any teacher understand how the common core standards will be assessed. There is a lot here, but there are helpful guides, an FAQ, and narrated powerpoints to help you navigate. See especially the Evidence Statements in math and ELA that clarify the student behaviors that will be measured to assess mastery of each standard. These are very helpful.
In the Classroom...
In this section, we include resources to help understand the CCSS in English and Math, and what they look like in the classroom.
Rich examples of math tasks and lesson examples linked to common core math standards. This site is authored by one of the principal authors of the standards.
This website provides excellent resources to help unpack the common core standards and see how they might be taught. The site provides free videos from real teachers teaching lessons aligned to standards as well as lesson commentary from the teacher, lesson study protocols, lesson materials, and more. Be sure to check out this excellent resource.
This is an excellent collection of short videos demonstrating real classrooms with real teachers and real students. There are currently 157 clips in the Common Core topic across all grades and subject areas. There are great teaching ideas here.
As part of your PD360 account, you have access to a wealth of excellent resources to help you unpack common core state standards and "see it in action" from real teachers in real classrooms. The Learning Progression tool makes it easy to browse the standards, see how they spiral from grade to grade, and see videos from real classroom aligned to standards. Additional videos are being added regularly.
The Teacher Channel aims to provide innovative videos and resources to educators to meet its goals of building teacher-driven professional learning, deepening and improving opportunities for teacher learning, and elevating and celebrating teachers in society. The website includes a growing collection of videos that focus on the Common Core State Standards, some of which focus on the background of the Common Core in certain grades/subjects, while others highlight instructional practices aligned to specific standards.

Math items aligned to CCSSM. Some excellent examples. Most content is focused on middle school grades.
This brand new FREE service provides excellent news-style current event articles on a variety of topics that are written at multiple levels of text complexity. You can adjust the Lexile level of the text with a few clicks! Teachers can create student accounts and assign texts. Each text has a built in quiz linked to CCSS standards. This tool should be very valuable for any teacher trying to meet CCSS standards for informational texts while addressing differentiated reading needs among her students.
