    • Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.

It can also be about adventuring with friends or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean. It’s pretty. Brave players battle terrible things in The Nether, which is more scary than pretty. You can also visit a land of mushrooms if it sounds more like your cup of tea.

"Unlocking the Power of Internet Collaboration: Adjusting Concepts So More People 'Get It'."

    • Unlocking the Power of Internet Collaboration: Adjusting Concepts So More People 'Get It'.
    • Educators, supervisors and mentors strive for the 'eureka moment', the moment when someone, "gets it". As we move more of our lives into online interaction and collaboration, there has never been a more important time to 'get it' than now. Teamwork between humans has provided an advantage to groups and societies which profoundly affect their levels of achievement. Online collaboration opens avenues for people to leverage themselves. Those who fall behind will be disadvantaged. The theme of this paper is assisting the 'eureka moment' in a digital environment so that the power of online collaboration can successfully be unlocked. The collaborative power of Web 2.0 and the pervasiveness of the Digital World into all walks of life have increased the urgency for advancements in this area in order to capitalize on the rapid uptake of collaborative technology. How the revelation of core concepts, time, space, virtuality and trust, affects new participants in online collaboration is explored. There is also discussion on the impact of participant identity which requires a 'persona' to act as a lens in collaboration and how this leads to an 'anonymity paradox'. The dynamic nature of virtual collaborative projects is also considered; in particular the impact on group leaders. The paper concludes that in order to unlock the power of online collaboration it is necessary to change focus from current solutions aimed at symptoms such as 'rules and guidelines' towards solutions addressing the underlying conceptual causes which result from the Internet's virtual nature. Addressing these issues has the potential to profoundly change our thinking and will be beneficial to organizations and communities

Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/) is a cloud-based document management service that works to synchronize a user's files on the Internet, as well as the user's computer and mobile device. The free service gives subscribers space in the cloud and access to the most current versions of their files, regardless of the device they have on hand. Subscribers are able to see the changes that they make to files on each device as soon as they are made, but are also able to see updates made by collaborators as soon as files are saved. If sharing files with non-subscribers, Dropbox users can send files via e-mail, or create a link to a file for view-only purposes. Dropbox users can manage multiple documents with collaborators on- or offline, and distribute video, audio, and multimedia files with team members within an anytime, anywhere work space. Users must download the Dropbox program to their computer and subscribe to the service online (Duffy & Mendelson, 2011). One curriculum specialist had this to say about Dropbox use in his school district:
Instead of printing up a bunch of paper resources, including lab manuals, and hauling all of these papers around every time they needed to be graded, these High School Science teachers were able to construct a plan for using a Web 2.0 tool in an innovative way that suited their particular needs. (Fisher, 2011, ¶ 4)
Teachers can not only share instructional documents, but also co-create files that address specific students' learning needs. Co-teachers might also consider using Dropbox to share video with reference to behavior management, confer about a student's educational progress and what contributed to that success, and strategize to overcome the challenges of a particular co-teaching model.

  • Education

Fact: Learning globally whether it be k-12 or scientific research, internet collaboration is helping information grow.

  • Sep 15, 13

"Collaboration in learning, Internet in education, and public relations for private schools are discussed, as well as a student's request for iPad tablet computers for electronic textbooks."

The theory of "connected learning" offers a positive frame for thinking about how to take advantage of the best parts of the digital era while avoiding its pitfalls. Connected learning doesn't start with technology and ask how to apply it to education. Instead, it calls for educators to pull together all the various experiences, interests, communities, and contexts in which learners participate -- in and out of school, online and offline -- as potential learning opportunities. Connected learning is a way to think about how technology and other affordances of our age can improve student learning and our approaches to teaching.
Independent schools -- both day and boarding -- are environments in which connected learners can thrive. By design, students are connected to peers and adults not just in the classroom, but also in their clubs, artistic and musical endeavors, and sports teams. Learning goes on many more hours per day, in integrated fashion, than it does in most public schools. Some of our campuses have museums and laboratories; others have museums and laboratories a subway or bus ride away. Adults in independent schools have a bigger canvas to work with in order to connect these experiences for students. If the teachers I work with are any indication, independent schools are packed with devoted educators with active, curious minds and a hunger to teach as effectively as they can.
Of the many venues in which connected learning can take place in an independent school, three stand out as opportunities: at the margins of the curriculum, at the core of the curriculum, and as a form of public outreach.

The New Invisible College compares the traditional scientific nationalism and the new view of global science as a complex adaptive system. It
is made clear in the book that a complex adaptive system is far more suitable for scientists to find complementary insight, knowledge, or skill.

International collaboration has widened and deepened so profoundly
that one may even take today’s increasingly tolerant and encouraging environment towards international collaboration for granted. What
are the driving forces behind the increased international collaboration?
What has changed fundamentally? How many types of collaboration
are there? What is best served by different types of international collaboration? Why is that scientifically advanced countries need such
international collaboration as well as developing countries? Is it really
brain drain or brain gain? How would developing countries enter the
game? The New Invisible College analyzes and describes a fundamental change in how international collaboration has been perceived,
organized, and carried out. Wagner offers insights into the dynamics
of international collaboration with not only detailed case studies of
concrete experiences of the choices made by individual collaborating scientists but also a science development strategy for taking the
advantage of the geography of global science

One of the defining characteristics of global science, according to
Wagner, is that researchers are free to join forces regardless of their geographical locations. Something must have happened globally such that
collaborative activities across geographical boundaries are substantially
more viable than before across the board. The role of the Internet in the
growing international collaboration is, not surprisingly, discussed in
the book but in a much later chapter and to a weaker extent than I would
expect. At an international level, as new light is shed on traditional views
of brain drains, it is insightful to address the contributions of foreignborn scientists to the development of many developing countries in a
    broader and longer term context.

The New Invisible College compares the traditional scientific nationalism and the new view of global science as a complex adaptive system. It
is made clear in the book that a complex adaptive system is far more suitable for scientists to find complementary insight, knowledge, or skill.
Concepts of social capital, weak ties, small-world and scale-free networks are introduced to explain why the bottom-up organization of the
self-organized network can do what top-down and centrally organized
    collaborative activities cannot

SoundCloud started out as a way for musicians to collaborate remotely

    LENGTH: 826 words

    Sep 07, 2013 (PandoDaily:http://pandodaily.com Delivered by Newstex)
When he was a kid, Swedish-born Alex Ljung never had a lemonade stand or dreamed of becoming a startup entrepreneur. But the founder of SoundCloud, a social sound platform, has quickly become a leading pioneer in our new wired world.
That's due to the ease of collaboration, social interactivity, and iconic orange waveform that SoundCloud enables. 'Sound,' he says, 'is a fundamental part of how people are social with each other.' As a result, SoundCloud's platform is democratic and open by design, allowing users to interact and collaborate with the likes of the Deftones or 50 Cent, who broadcast and trade tips with the general community. SoundCloud breaks down barriers between musicians and fans, which is the key advancement in the disruption of entertainment across all of the arts. Artists like Beyonce are using SoundCloud to hold remix competitions and encouraging fans to perform over their tracks. The platform also challenges the traditional music distribution model by giving users the ability to monetize their creations. Initially, SoundCloud offered users the ability to share tracks and give feedback. From this core idea, the platform has grown to over 180 million users. sharing, connecting, commenting, remixing, listening to, and contributing to all kinds of sounds from all over the world. There's ambient noise from the International Space Station, White House press conferences, up-and-coming indie labels, and, in Ljung's case, the very first cries of his cousin's baby, all mingled in a polyphonic aural symphony. As engineering students in Stockholm, Ljung and his co-founder Eric Wahlforss, were dissatisfied with existing platforms and tools available to musicians who wanted to collaborate remotely. They struggled to describe what part of the song they wished to edit and how they wanted it to sound, unless they were sitting right next to each other. There was Vimeo for video sharing and Flickr for photo sharing, but nothing for sound sharing. Further, for Ljung, the existing audio platforms simply replicated the model and character of old media. As many startups, the platform emerged out of a real need to solve a problem. So it's no wonder that SoundCloud was created by musicians seeking not money or fame, but simply a way to make music collaboration easier. The unique insight and vision of the SoundCloud founders was not to tie themselves down to offering a service that just felt like pressing play on a cassette or DVD player, but harnessing and combining the deeply social essence of music and the Internet. The advice Ljung gives to budding entrepreneurs is to stop thinking and worrying so much. Instead, get out there and do it no matter how crazy or outlandish your idea, because you never know where it can lead. Hackathons, for example, are vital in keeping the stream of innovation flowing at SoundCloud HQ. Ljung and and his team built a ping-pong table, for example, that doubles as a musical instrument to build stronger team relationships. Find out more in the video. • nullAs a result, salespeople need to spend countless hours getting the customer's desired product configuration, which is typically very complex, in synch with what the design and manufacturing teams are able to deliver. Up-to-date product information and customer configurations, passed down the supply chain and into ERP systems, are also crucial for on-site support, because the life of a turbine engine is longer than 30 years, Lewis said.

    • Sound pretty threatening to anyone invested in the status quo? You bet. Indeed, as the title of Rheingold's book implies, there could be a dark side to this new cooperative force, especially if it results in mob rule. Quite often, the best solution to a problem comes from the sudden flash of insight from a solitary genius such as Charles Darwin or Albert Einstein. It would be a tragedy if these folks, sometimes unpopular in their times, got lost in the cooperative crowds. Clearly, peer production has its limits. Almost certainly, it will never build railroads, grow wheat, run nuclear power plants, or write great novels.

Yet this cooperative force may spread beyond such easily shared commodities as information, knowledge, and media. People are starting to use the Net to pool tangible goods as well. In a sense, Skype enables people to share computer hardware. Thanks to the Web's ability to serve as a meeting ground and scheduling coordinator, it's becoming economical to share cars, for example. Services such as Zipcar Inc. and Flexcar let members use the Net to reserve one of a fleet of autos in crowded cities, almost on demand, for an hourly fee.

      • nullWeb design and programmers have created the next social revolution making companies competition peak due to fast response times with the use of applications like skype and other social media groups instantaneously update status like capitol investing -- 2013-09-12

    • Technology Will Make Collaboration Your Next Competitive Advantage

New tools are changing the way people work with each other, their companies’ partners, and their customers.

    • As businesses cut back on workers and resources, the number of professionals who defined themselves as freelancers increased to 30 million in the United States alone, and many of them turned to social-networking sites, such as LinkedIn and Facebook, to build their businesses. Many people who remained employed used the same strategies as an insurance policy against the next reduction in force. They also compensated for leaner IT budgets by supplying their own hardware, leading to new acronyms such as BYOD (“bring your own device”) and BYOC (“bring your own computer”). In fact, Kraft Foods “coöpted” employee-owned smart phones and tablets, explicitly welcoming and supporting “third-party” devices not directly purchased by the company.
      • null It’s all about the culture. International Data Corporation, an IT research firm, argues that we’re entering “a new phase of business collaboration” based on the “intersection of Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0, and collaboration tools to form the social business.”
