    3. You respond to an email with ALL CAPS.
    4. You purchase a used gaming system and find out the previous owners account information has not been deleted. You go into the online store and start making purchases with their account information.

    8. Adding items to your wish list on Amazon that you share with your friends and family.
    9. You sign a petition to support the revision of the 1986 electronic Communications privacy act that would restrict police from reviewing private emails without a warrant.

    Part II: Digital Citizenship Compass
Using the digital citizenship compass, identify how you feel about each statement on the following pages and provide sound reasoning, why you feel this way, based on the material learned this month
    1. Geoff really wants to watch a movie based on a book that he just read. He can’t find the movie on Netflix, Hulu, or any other paid streaming service. He can find the movie available for purchase, but it's out of his budget. He searches for it online and finds a site which he can download it illegally and decides to do so.

    Maybe or Maybe Not (WEST)
According to a lot of articles and newspapers you may be able to download the movie for free and it all depends on the copyright laws for that site and it would be wise to see if it is legal for that particular work because some Movies are illegal where some are not and it could be because they are trying to market their work or they are trying to make money while protecting it from piracy. Anyhow, if Geoff is not making money off of this download where he is making copies and selling them, and is specifically focusing on samples and what to create of his own then maybe he is clear on the compass.

    2. Brenda finds a thumb drive on the floor at her local library. She decides that while no one is looking, she was inserted into her laptop to see what files are on it she discovers that belongs to another student in her class, and then they have been working on the same assignment she was researching in the library Brenda decides to keep the thumb drive and use the work as a row

    This is wrong (SOUTH)
The main reason you should not use this work is because you will get caught. It is like stealing a full notebook on the ground and claiming it to be your own. I use the rule of do onto those as you would want those to do to you. I specifically would return the item to lost and found. This has happened to me and the thumb drive was given back to me eventually and it was scary because the information included in the thumb drive was my personal medical journal that was not password protected. Below is a sight where you can protect your work on your thumb-drive, hard-drive, or external and even if you do lose it, your information should be backed up in a cloud somewhere.

    3. While working on a project that requires you to use only photos or film footage that you took yourself you realize that you forgot to take one of the shots (while you were on location) a week ago. You don't have time to drive two hours to take more footage but you did find some footage online that will work perfectly. You decide to use the extra footage and pass it off as your own.

Not Comfortable With This (South East)
Let me tell you why. You can use metadata or geo-data as an instructor and totally find out if the picture was taken with the same camera, at the same time and this will distinguish if you are a source of no credibility. Now, if the professor just happens to pass through it and you really had tons of work you already did, why not just indicate to the instructor you had to use a picture from the internet to help you? Trust, integrity and honesty are what will set us all free. That is good sound judgment and even though your honesty may not help it is important to know it probably won’t hurt either.

    4. Your teacher assigned you to work with a group of students that you don't like in your not happy about you ignore your group members request for contact because you have decided not to work on the assignment with them just before the assignment is do you send an email to your group members; you claim that none of them got in touch with you and then for that email to your teacher

COULD BE RIGHT/ NEEDS SOME CHANGES (NORTHWEST)
What is wrong with this individual? Teamwork is where most people thrive and even if there is a disagreement among the group, there has to be one side that is strong and that can be followed. Now to email the professor and tell him/her a lie is going to backfire. The changes would be discussing his differences with the team. One lie leads to ten more lies, it’s a snowball effect. It happens a lot because humans are not perfect. Sound judgment should prevent this clever yet deceptive act or irresponsibility.

    5. While you are sitting in class you decide to take some pictures of your teacher without your teachers knowledge or permission you then edit the pictures and post them on Twitter and Instagram

COULD BE DIFFERENT FOR EACH TEACHER (NORTH EAST)
I remember talking about this in class but it was in reference to be a friend on twitter or LinkedIn which is okay. This is specific to each case because we don’t know what was done. Was it a positive note for the teacher, or something that would jeopardize his/her career? Will this photo then be pushed around the internet now without the teacher permission? Best thing to do is either ask the teacher for permission otherwise you could get in legal trouble varying from state to state.

    6. Randy doesn't have a lot of money but really wants to watch a movie that is on Netflix he knows that you have an account and asks for your username and password.

RIGHT OR DOESN’T BOTHER ME (NORTH)
I have a password and the permission, what are you going to do? Sue me? It’s about trust between mutual friends which happens to be with a movie web site Netflix. Sharing is caring. Now to a degree, you shouldn’t go and have groups of people using the same Netflix. You don’t want that name and password out on the internet. So you need to trust this person. Even if this person betrays you, you can change the password the next day or so. I usually set up my passwords (when I can) to be changed after a certain amount of time by default.

    7. A student has forgotten about an assignment that is due and then realizes that it is do before midnight that same day he remembers that a friend offered to give him all of her work from the class--since they took it a month ago but with a different instructor. The student decided to take his friend up on the offer.

    WORTH A SHOT (SOUTHWEST)
Your friend is offering you some assistance. What is the major problem? That’s what friends are for. You may be able to use ideas and guidance for your work to help you jumpstart and get it in by the deadline. You cannot use the same work though. That is wrong. You may be forgetful but not stupid. The reason it is worth a shot is because the class may even be different and the work may even be opinionated or the work needs to be specifically tailored to the instructors specific instructions, so attending the class, taking the notes and getting help from a friend may be worth the shot because you are forgetful. This could easily be in the wrong. Difficult compass questions overall. But it is up to us to communicate and fill the gray area that is in our everyday lives.

Part III: As a digital citizen, what would you do?

    1. You find a collection of rare and expensive video games on craigslist-- that you would really enjoy playing. However the price seems too good to be true. The ad contains several photos and seller’s address. What steps would you take to ensure the authenticity of the author?

First and foremost I would reply to the craigslist ad and ask for a phone number to speak directly. I would verify the condition of the games and ask for a recent photo to be sent to me directly. I would also check the credibility of the seller like they have on Amazon, if they do not have that, then I would use verexif.com/en/ to ensure the photos were taken at the same place and at the same time so I know they are genuine. I can also compare that to the recent pictures he sends me. So there are a number of things I could do and finally I could ask him/her to Skype or video conference to verify the authenticity of the offer, knowing about advertisements that have gone bad through craigslist on the news.

    2. You have been offered a job as an art career for a local website the website contains several photos that need Geo tagging to update the date and location information (for each photo). You know a few of the locations because you visited them personally, but how would you go about finding information for the locations that you have never visited?

This is simple. You will be using the website verexif.com/en/. You input the URL and get the Longitude and Latitude as well as a picture of where it was taken. Sometimes the picture will be a bit off but it all depends on the location of the cell tower. Some pictures may even pop up on the internet and have more information about them, but I would make sure they were credible.

    3. You take on a freelance job to clean up and streamline a computer for a colleague. As you begin the project, you notice that this person may not be digitally native or fluent with computers. The computer that your colleague wishes for you to work on contains poor file management--exposing financial and personal records in addition private photos are easily accessible. What is your responsibility to your colleague and her information?

Ask the girl which of the files she doesn’t want you to access. Put them in a folder and have her either transfer them onto an external where you will not have access to them if she doesn’t trust you. If she says do not worry about it and you have the responsibility of doing your job without snooping with her permission. The other thing you could do is have her stay and watch over your shoulder which is her decision. I personally would have the files password protected and put on an external. I heard a story about a best buy employee gathering photos from a computer turned into the geek squad. Now I heard this on XL106.7, so I may be credible. The pictures were stolen and put on the internet and the girl ended up suing. So this is a very important step, NOTIFY the digital immigrant of her situation to save her and yourself.

    4. While playing your favorite online game another player initiates a chat with you and claims to be selling his guilt for 100 gold pieces. You know that selling guilds goes against the community rules, so that it would be considered an unprotected transaction. However it’s the level 25 gold and you would really like to be the guildmaster! Would you take a chance? What tools/technologies and steps could you take before making your decision?

Sounds like a transaction that might be monitored. I do not play online games which have guilds and transactions like that. I think that if you do have someone who is selling for that cheap and you are finding it to good to be true then it probably is to good to be true. Check the seller’s credibility and how long he has had that gold. Is he/she an account that has been flagged or reported before? I am not much of a gambler, and I would not take this transaction for those reasons, especially to protect my own account.

    5. You have decided that you want to create an online community for people who love the same type of food that you love. How and where would you go about setting up that community? How would you recruit and validate members?

Well there are many sites where you can build a community. Blogger.com, you can create a community on facebook, you can use a hashtag on twitter and call it #italianfood. This could be whatever food Is your favorite. I would personally use Pinterest because notonly are you getting a description of the food you are getting a picture of the type of food you love. It also can give you new ideas of food you love but haven’t discovered that version yet. That is the bestthing about a digital community, networking, reaching out and learning from others as well as building a collection of your own favorites.

    6. A friend of yours created in online dating profile claims to have found the “love of his life”. They have been dating online for almost a year but have never met in person. You are concerned that the person your friend met online might be a catfish or someone who has created a fake online profile. How could you prove this possibility to your friend?

This has happened to a friend of mine as well as been an episode on Dr. Phil. The phone might be someone else, the pictures which you can use geodata as well as profiles can all seem right. You may even have an address or background check. But is this really the person who is behind the keyboard or computer communicating with you? Are they telling you the truth? Ask them for a facetime if they have a cell phone. Then ask them for a Skype. Try video on Facebook and see if this person has multiple social networks because this could validate the authenticity of the person. Like I said before you can do a background check with beenverified.com. I personally don’t waste time having an online relationship with someone unless I already met them or I already know of them and want to meet them. Some random could be a creeper and even dangerous so be careful.

"But I have more than a few problems with it as well. For one thing, this is how I make my living, and recording a performance changes the economics. When someone buys a ticket to a performance, they are paying to hear that performance once. One could say that it's a rental, not a purchase. And they are paying for themselves to hear it, not for their friends, families or internet followers. There are those who might accuse me of being miserly, feeling that it is my duty and privilege to share the art of music, but consider the parallel: if I pay someone to mow my lawn, that doesn't mean that at the push of a button they should mow my lawn again for free, or mow the lawns of my neighbors and friends. A job is a job, and bills are bills. A one-time mow doesn't cost the same as a weekly lawn service."

    • We live in a world where the lines between live and edited music are blurry, to say the least. "Live" CD's can contain dozens of edits, if not more, and "live" TV broadcasts are often the result of several performances carefully cobbled together. This isn't because artists are trying to fool their audience into thinking they play better than they do! It's because music is experienced differently upon repeated listening. And it is a sad reality that if a classical musician plays an out of tune note or fudges a passage in a performance that ends up on YouTube, there's a strong chance that some sad, anonymous person sitting behind a computer screen will feel the need to point this out with a snarky comment or a "thumbs down."

"Legally, I see a huge copyright issue here.  Whoever took that photo has a copyright in it, attaching the moment the photo button was pushed.  It's an original work of authorship in a fixed medium of expression.  The copyright act couldn't be clearer on this."
