Kimlee Khieu's List: Flu evidence

How one virus spread from pigs and birds to humans around the globe. And why microbes like the H1N1 flu have become a growing threat.

    • Around Thanksgiving 2005 a teenage boy helped his brother-in-law butcher 31 pigs at a local Wisconsin slaughterhouse, and a week later the 17-year-old pinned down another pig while it was gutted. In the lead-up to the holidays the boy's family bought a chicken and kept the animal in their home, out of the harsh Sheboygan autumn. On Dec. 7, the teenager came down with the flu, suffering an illness that lasted three days. He visited a local clinic, then fully recovered, and nobody else in his family took ill.

On April 17, the CDC determined that two patient cases of febrile respiratory illness in southern California were caused by infection with the swine influenza A (H1N1) virus. Since then, six additional cases have been identified and there are now eight U.S. cases: six in California and two in Texas. Since that time more cases have been identified and as of April 26, 2007 (the most recent update from CDC) there have 40 cases identified in the United States. Cases have also been reported in Canada.

    • Swine' is a Swedish term meaning 'Pig'. Swine flu was first spotted in 1173. It was first discovered in animals like pigs, horses and also in birds like swans and hens. This flu is spread from these animals to humans which was proved in the year 1933. This interesting information was given in a H1N1 awareness program organized by the college for the students by Dr.C.Purushottam.
