• Schools have reopened, with 900,000 children attending school this year without having to pay tuition and 2 million children receiving a hot meal every day as part of a national school feeding program.
• Over half of its population of 10 million lives on less than US$1 per day, and 78% live on less than US$2 per day.
• The World Bank's strategic objectives for the next year in Haiti will be: 1) reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience, 2) sustainable reconstruction in housing and electricity, 3) building human capital through education, 4) revitalizing the economy, as well as, a crosscutting theme of governance. The World Bank also approved the second phase of the Education for All Project (US$70 million), the Disaster Risk Management and Reconstruction project (US$60 million), and the second phase of the Strengthening Agriculture Public Services project (US$50 million, including US$10 million from the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program).

  The HRF is the main resource for strategically closing financing gaps to achieve a balanced recovery.
• Provided major support to the education sector. Since the earthquake, the Bank has financed 210,000 tuition waivers and school meals for 75,000 every day. Access is being expanded and quality enhanced over the next 3 years

• • Create a structure that establishes a relationship with teachers in training, i.e. resident teachers working in SA alongside mentor teachers.
• • Research this project and find out what schools they are partnering with, whether those schools are still standing, if there is a need for new partners, success of program, etc.

• • Research Matenwa Community Learning Center. Ask Konrad if he's worked with any schools in Port au Prince, particularly in Cite Soleil
• • Retention is going to be a big issue. Will the proximity of the elementary and middle schools help with retention? What are main drivers leading kids to drop out?
• • Research Bernard Reform and ask Konrad his opinion on this. Too, ask how it relates to the number of teachers available to teach at the elementary level.
• The Haitian Ministry of Education accepts that textbooks in Creole are in short supply, though it says Creole is already being used widely in classrooms, alongside French.

• Collaborative, community-based construction is considered to be the key. Through simple methods for untrained laborers and the use of local inexpensive materials the project seeks to demonstrate to the community how enhanced traditional building techniques provide real possibility for future building development: low cost, low tech construction that they can built by themselves, using their own resources.
   Rather than rely on outsiders, they can be part of the solution. The construction process can help address the (common) issue of unemployment and unskilled workforce between the refugees, in addition to strengthening relationships among the villagers and reinforcing the sense of community.

• • Why not create a space that becomes a regional and global model? Sports present excellent opportunities for learning all types of skills and meshes nicely with peace education and health education (as well as biology, communication, mathematics and so on).

  • This presents an excellent opportunity for a partnership with a teacher education program, i.e. make the stadium complex a site for teachers in training focused on physical and health education in addition to other disciplines.
• Out of 1,032 schools in Port-au-Prince, only four offer sports to their students.  While the law provides for athletic programs, there are neither funds, fields nor physical education teachers.
• • How will this fees be defrayed so that students can attend for free?
• A Ganar program in Haiti.  This program was launched in January 2011, and will be serve 400 youths from 16 to 24 years old by teaching them vocational skills and entrepreneur skills.  This program which has been established for five years in other latin American countries uses the cornerstone of sports to teach life and work skills to youths.  It will teach respect, confidence, self esteem, using sport as a metaphor for learning lessons.  The program will teach youths on the job skills, entrepreneur skills, finance, computers, and people skills.  It will place them in different professions, in internships and with mentors for a period of 2 years to ensure long term success.
• The hospital will be turned into a large school by LADH  when it will no longer be in use as a treatment center.
• In December 2010, LADH built a bigger recycling and composting center, which will serve as a study center for composting and recycling.
