• Available at no cost to students and faculty, Google Apps includes cloud email, storage, hosting, word processing and collaboration tools. Previously, colleges were forced to invest millions in these services and struggled to modernize outdated technology, not to mention maintain email servers and data centers. Microsoft has followed suit with their Office 365 solution, and the cloud revolution is in full swing on campuses.

• Why Schools are Turning to Google Apps
• Today, the entire public school system of Oregon will embrace Google Apps. 400,000 Students, teachers, and administrators will have access to a common e-mail and chat system, cloud-based collaboration tools, and a robust multimedia streaming service.
• We interviewed the architects of this plan, as well as others who use Google in the classroom, and we've highlighted the three major benefits: 1) It saves schools money; 2) It boosts academic performance and motivation, and; 3) It prepares students for digital communication in the real world.

• Conclusion
• That more school districts are starting to adopt Google Apps for use in the classroom is in many ways an affirmation of the broader cloud computing model in enterprise settings. The increasing maturity of these tools, paired with significant cost savings, makes web apps attractive to cash-strapped school departments.

• Google Apps: Saving Schools Money or Paying With Your Kid's Privacy?
• Cloud computing services like Google Apps can offer important benefits for your kids. Documents and information can be accessed at any time from any Internet-connected device, making it easy for students to start a project on a classroom computer and continue it on a tablet or computer at home. Teachers and students also can access and edit a single document in real time, allowing for a more interactive and collaborative learning environment
• A key reason schools are signing up for Google Apps for Education is that Google claims to provide these services at no cost. But these services are not entirely free. Did you know that schools may be "paying" for these services with your kid's privacy?
• When a school signs up for Google Apps for Education, the school selects an administrator to manage the use of the services by its students. This administrator is responsible for assigning each student an email address and password, which the student must use to access his or her account. In this video from Google's help center, Google warns that this administrator also has access to all of the data that the student stores in his or her Google account, "including your emails, contacts, even changing your password and other information" -- in other words, not just your kid's schoolwork.

• Look at school districts across the country these days, and you'll see a lot of educators with their heads in the cloud. Driven by educators' need to provide remote access, save money in licensing fees, and help students share their work, cloud-based computing is making serious inroads in education. Two regions are leading the way: The state of Oregon is two years into the first statewide rollout of Google Apps for Education (aka Google Docs), while the Clarksville-Montgomery County (TN) School System (CMCSS) last year became the first countywide school district to launch Microsoft Office 365 for Education. Each of these ambitious projects can offer lessons to school districts considering a move into the cloud.
