Julialt's List: TFA-Apply

    • When I applied to TFA, I basically thought that once you get in, you’re in; you would magically be certified and placed in a school with no need for further interviewing. Oops.. maybe I should have researched this a bit more beforehand
    • I made it through the difficult interviewing and placement phase

    • I can’t decide if my management is getting better or worse. Today I differentiated and wanted to explode when it genuinely worked.
    • Also, for once, I think those students felt the impact of not doing their work on time. All the other students were reading their essays out loud, peer editing

    • As many CMA’s pointed out to me, the goal of institute is not to prevent corps members from dropping out. It is instead to provide them with the skills and mindsets so that they have the capability of becoming successful teachers
    • Moreover, many of those who dropped out of TFA this year in Detroit did so not because they did not have the appropriate skills or mindsets, but rather because they realized that teaching took a personal toll on them that they decided they would not be willing to sustain for two years.

    • TFA’s attrition rate during Institute (currently 11%) and its root cause
    • I think TFA’s recruitment style has impacts far beyond Institute.

    • I decided to apply for Teach For America a few months ago when I entered my senior year of college and had to start thinking about my post-graduation plans. As a marketing major
    • Before even getting accepted to the program it is a pretty overwhelming experience

    • The application for TFA is harrowing. But it’s well worth it.
    • My tips for you:
    • I was contacted through a recruiter at school and applied through the website. After that I had a brief phone interview, which mainly served to measure my interest in the program.
    • Negotiation Details

Not much negotiation. You are given a region and have two weeks to decide.

scripted interview is unpopular; people know it's scripted and interviewers come off as uninterested. possibility of automated transcription?

    • Nothing is "hard" to do, just a lot of pressure because of the length/formality of it.
    • The phone interview is extremely scripted. You can tell that the interviewer is reading off the paper. She wasn't engaged in anything I said, but instead, was focused on writing everything down. I was very uninterested in the interview after 10 minutes because it was so scripted and boring.

    • After submitting resume and letter of intent to complete the online application, I was told that I had made it to the next round of phone interviews. After picking a day and time that worked for me, the interviewer called me to discuss my resume, and asked me some questions, presumably done off a script. A week or so after, I got an e-mail telling me I had made it to the final round of interviews.
    • I became acquainted with a TFA recruiter my junior year of college and expressed my interest in joining TFA, I was invited to a conversation with an alumni who answered my questions about TFA and her experience, but also asked me about my experiences.

    • The interview questions were very rigid and not necessarily tailored to the interviewee's personal experiences. It was difficult to add experiences which I felt were relevant to the position.
    • I received an incredible amount of communication from them that was a considerable turn-off. Even after requesting to not be contacted, I continued to receive contact from the company.

    • was contacted by Teach for America during my senior year in college. I had a brief phone interview with a recruiter and was encouraged to submit my application. A week after submitting my application, I was notified that I had advanced to the final interview round
    • Before the final interview, I completed an online assignment about various situations that I might encounter as a corps member.

    • As you near the end of your college career, you are starting to decide what to do after graduation. You may consider beginning your career, taking some time to travel, or going to graduate school. Another option is Teach For America
    • Jillian Berkin, University of Illinois x’11, who is currently going through the application process, and Katie Brown x’10, a current corps member, offer their advice on applying for Teach For America.

    • Well, before you apply, truly consider to yourself how committed you are to teaching, and teaching in a challenging environment. Do you want truly want to stand in the front a classroom?  Do you even like children? Do you mind working in extremely challenging situations?
    • I think you should throw notions of patriotism, service, meeting new people, using TFA as a stepping stone to graduate schools or future employment, politics, or any other trivial reason away.
