The most important Hominids for our purposes are the Following: Australopithecus afarensis, Homo habilis, Homo erectus, Homo heidelbergensis, Homo neanderthalensis, and Homo Sapiens.
This is a great place to start when exploring human origins and human evolution

Sahelanthropus tchadensis was described in 2002 by French paleontologist Michel Brunet and his team. It was discovered in Chad from deposits that have been dated by biostratigraphy to between 6 and 7 million years in age
Homo erectus (or the various species which may be subsumed under that appellation) are extremely important in the study of modern human origins. The Middle Pleistocene is where the modern human postcrania develops, the modern cranial features begin to develop, and significant increases in brain size occur. It is also important because many behavioral changes occur in this time period, e.g., much more developed lithic industries, the controlled use of fire, regular meat-eating, hunting, etc. This is where the things most people consider “human” start to develop to the point where most people would recognize these pattern of anatomy and behavior as human. This is also a dynamic time in the evolutionary perspective caused by these species, with the recent well-dated Dmanisi remains in the Republic of Georgia, dated to 1.7 myr.
Discussion bipedalism and the advantages of walking upright
Laetoli Footprints
This is an example of one of the many things that affected human evolution such as eating meat, becoming bipedal, using tools, and developing language.
These data are a good example of how paradigms affect understanding of evolution. It also illustrates the gene-flow replacement model approach that we discussed a bit in the class.
This is a good page for getting a good overview of the many fossil hominins that populate the fossil record concerning human evolution.
