• If you are a Digital Immigrant, it does not mean you are automatically technically inept.
• You can actually be very technically astute.

• Avoiders.
• This group does not adapt to new technology quickly, if ever. For example, my father-in-law still gets the newspaper, orders cigars through the mail, and uses the USPS to deliver letters to his friends. He is happy with his life.
• Reluctant Adopters.
• This group is aware of new technology and adopts to it at a slow pace. In many respects, I fall into this group. For example, I still have a second generation phone. It took me 10 years to finally get a DVR, even though I knew it would change how I watch television as soon as I saw it. I am happy with my life.
• Eager Adopters.
• This group enthusiastically adapts to new technology. They embrace it. For example, Jeremy Johnson, one of the organizers of the Big Design Conference, falls into this group. He seems to be plugged into every device, network, tech trend, and so on. Jeremy personifies an Eager Adopter. Jeremy is happy with his life, too.

• Digital Citizen?
• They tend to influence the way teachers, parents, peers and society in general classify, justify and treat whichever group is represented by the stereotype.
• The Myth
• many people I come in contact with on a regular basis who assume that any child under the age of 18
• were they given a computer, would automatically know how to use it.
• nonprofit organization One Laptop Per Child. OLPC dropped Android tablets into a remote Ethiopian village and were thrilled to find that the children, without an adult teaching them, figured out how to use the tablet, and used the apps to learn the English alphabet and basic literacy skills.
• they figured out how to disable some of the controls placed on the devices.
• there are varying degrees of "using a computer."
• one thing to use a tablet computer and its apps to learn basic literacy skills; but learning to create, read critically, use online content responsibly and be a respectful digital citizen are not always skills that can be learned without the guidance of a teacher of some kind (notice I did not say "adult").
• students of this generation are "digital natives" because they grew up with computers and technological devices.
• Explicit Teaching
• By fifth grade, my students will hopefully be better at doing research because they will understand why it's not OK to copy, and they will have the skills to avoid doing it themselves
• This is not, as the stereotype might suggest, because they were born that way.
• Breaking Down Stereotypes
• With students maintaining personal blogs, creating their own YouTube channels and engaging in online gaming, learning, creation and you-name-it communities, it is imperative that they know and understand their rights and responsibilities when it comes to content creation and consumption, as well as how they conduct themselves socially online.
• It is dangerous for us to assume that there is such a thing as a "digital native."

In particular, we focus on the influence upon institutions of education and government, while also extending inquiry to impacts on business, relationships, and mental health.
