The CHI Fieldschool is a unique experience that employs the model of an archaeological fieldschool (in which students come together for a period of 5 or 6 weeks to work on an archaeological site in order to learn how to do archaeology). Instead of working on an archaeological site, however, students in the CHI Fieldschool will come together to collaboratively work on several cultural heritage informatics projects. In the process they will learn a great deal about what it takes to build applications and digital user experiences that serve the domain of cultural heritage - skills such as programming, media design, project management, user centered design, digital storytelling, etc.
Issue of "Culture and Local Governance" focused on "culture and sustainable communities"
The creation of more sustainable communities requires the participation of people at the grassroots level in practices around waste disposal, garden care, home maintenance, transportation, and more. The challenge facing municipalities is that current methods of providing sustainability guidance -- websites and newsletters -- are not aligned with the expectations of residents. And while many people report a desire to change their behaviors for the better, they also report confusion as to how to do so most effectively; this knowledge gap leads to frustration, and eventually to backsliding.
SustainableEye is a social-networking based, contextual-advertising driven application that helps to propagate sustainable behaviors and habits amongst the residents of a region.
In addition to being available as a smartphone/ tablet app (Apple, RIM, and Android), SustainableEye can be deployed as a web application, and communicates at a glance a community's sustainability targets and progress. Read more about SustainableEye and the value we deliver to local governments seeking to enable a conversation about sustainability.
