• ENGINEERS MAKE PRACTICAL USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

• All this and more is available to you on Engineers Looking for Stuff, a group for engineers available on both the Linkedln and Facebook social networking sites (though the Linked In group is considerably more active, said group founder Richard Savoie).
• ELFS, as it's affectionately referred to by its 2,135 Linked In members, is but one example of the way engineers can make use of the explosive growth in social networks that's taken place during the past five years.
• In 2013, engineers are turning to sites like Face-book, Linked In, Meet up, Twitter, and a growing number of more specifically tailored sites to find jobs, get questions answered, and connect with people who share professional interests.
• Social networks have changed how people and many businesses communicate, said Robert Preville, founder and chief executive officer at Industry Pigeon, a site started in June 2012 that bills itself as "a social trade network for industry and manufacturing to meet, share, and transact." Communication is never ending on social networks, Preville said. You can hop on at midnight and join a conversation as it's happening.

• The increased use of the Internet as a new tool in communication has changed the way people interact. This fact is even more evident in the recent development and use of friend-networking sites. However, no research has evaluated these sites and their impact on college students. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate: (a) why people use these friend-networking sites, (b) what the characteristics are of the typical college user, and (c) what uses and gratifications are met by using these sites. Results indicated that the vast majority of college students are using these friend-networking sites for a significant portion of their day for reasons such as making new friends and locating old friends. Additionally, both men and women of traditional college age are equally engaging in this form of online communication with this result holding true for nearly all ethnic groups. Finally, results showed that many uses and gratifications are met by users (e.g., “keeping in touch with friends”). • YOUNG Alex Batchelor is back home safe and sound – and it’s all thanks to the incredible community spirit shown by the public.
• Alex, who has Down’s Syndrome, was reported missing at about 3pm on Tuesday because he was nowhere to be seen when his lift arrived at Highbury College in Cosham
• Police put on an appeal – including releasing his picture – and within a few hours more than 2,000 people had joined a Facebook group to find Alex, who lives in Stubbington.

• Teams of people – many strangers to each other and Alex – were out searching for him.

  

  He was eventually found at about 3am yesterday at a bus stop in Eastbourne, East Sussex, by two women who had seen the online appeal.

  Alex’s dad Jeff Batchelor, 47, from Stubbington, said: ‘We want to say a huge thank you to the police and the public. So many people were helpful.

• ‘It appears because of Facebook somebody over in Eastbourne put it on their profile and happened to go out and see him. We are trying to find out who the two young ladies are. There are some wonderful people.’

  Jeff and wife Michelle, who had been frantically driving across south Hampshire looking for him, had an emotional reunion with Alex in Worthing after Eastbourne police drove him halfway home.
