I find it hard to concisely sum up my work and interests, mainly because they are so varied. However if
ired from the RBI to enable the provision of microfinance services in a more measured way is permission to provide deposit services. This is not a call to realise the RBI’s nightmare and open the floodgates for all and sundry to collect deposits and disappear into the sunset with the savings of the poor. What is needed is for the RBI to put into place rules that will enable NBFC MFIs with the most capable managements to provide deposit services to micro-clients.
This will have a cooling effect on these MFIs in two ways. First, it will subject them to a gamut of prudential regulation and intensive supervision not applicable to credit-only institutions, increasing their regulatory obligations without appearing to be unduly heavy handed. Second, perhaps more importantly, it will alter the relationship between the MFI and its clients away from the present mono-culture of working capital financing. Adding the dimension where the MFI is also partly dependent on service to the client for generating deposits that contribute to financing its operations will result in a more balanced MFI-client relationship than exists today.
