Spelling Development Research
It's impossible to miss the rhetoric. Newspapers, television programs, radio shows, school boards, special interest groups, and parents are clamoring clamoring for back to basics more loudly than ever. Too often, I think, that means, "Let's go Let's back to the old days when everything was rosy. The problem is, the literacy rate back then was not as good as it is today. If we look at the NAEP National Assessment of Educational Progress\ntest scores for reading and spelling over the last two decades, overall, the scores show very little change. Most students can decode words while reading and spell words when writing; the problem lies in understanding and critical thinking.
