Abstract
Following their emergence around 2011, digital badges began transforming the way learning and accomplishment are recognized. Badges are now integral to growing numbers of associations, formal and informal educational institutions, publishers, learning management systems, and entrepreneurs. This explosion of interest in badges was catalyzed by the 2012 Badges for Lifelong Learning competition organized by the Digital Media and Learning initiative
