Could this partly explain low calorie diets like the 5:2 diet which works by relative starvation 2 nonconsecutive days out of 7 which seems to have beneficial anti-aging effects as well as promoting weight loss. I wonder if this AMPK is being activated epigentically in such cases considering it is activated in low enegry cells according to the article above. If so it might be a way to gain the benefit without drugs.
Also what about conditions where cell energy utilisation has been compromised like with certain diseases? Does it activate AMPK? Or if we indulge in regular physical exercise as a drain of excess energy in cells? (especially since the effect ranges beyond the cells targeted by the exercise).
It kinda makes sense the body might step up autophagy if it is being starved.
