Evaluation - This is an up to date site run by a credible non-profit organization (Association for Information and Image Management) dedicated to the education of information professionals. The information presented rings true and is corroborated by the other sources I have researched regarding what internet collaboration is.

      • Collaboration is a working practice whereby individuals work together to a common purpose to achieve business benefit. Key features of collaboration tools are:

        • Synchronous collaboration such as online meetings and instant messaging
        •
        • Asynchronous collaboration such as shared workspaces and annotations
    • Many organizations see value in using Web 2.0 tools or social software within their organizations for improved collaboration and innovation, and this is then often referred to as Enterprise 2.0. AIIM defines Enterprise 2.0 as a system of web-based technologies that provide rapid and agile collaboration, information sharing, emergence and integration capabilities in the extended enterprise.

Evaluation - Calgary Scientific is a company that designs FDA certified medical viewers and imaging systems designed to work with online collaborative technology. Their website is up to date and authoritative in their field, and the information is corroborated by my other sources regarding what internet collaboration is.

    • By definition, collaboration means "to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavour," ref Merriam Webster. In the world of technology and the internet, "modern communication" collaboration really means working together to reach a common goal. Collaboration vs. True Online Collaboration though, is the question. Collaboration is a very broad term. True online collaboration is when we can utilize software to truly work with others as if they were here in the room with us - geography is no longer a barrier.

Evaluation - Indaba is an organization that builds data collection and publishing software and is therefore an authoritative source of information on this subject, the information presented also corroborates my other sources regarding what internet collaboration is.

    • Over the last ten years I have used, loved and hated online collaboration tools with teams in more than 100 countries. It’s not magic. Online collaboration is simply getting stuff done over the Internet, and online collaboration tools, all of them, have some means of addressing three functions: relationship management, knowledge management, and project management. Put more simply: keeping people connected, getting them the stuff they need, and sorting out what to do next.

    • For example, telematics applications, similar to global positioning systems, will allow organizations to send, receive and store information via telecommunications devices while controlling remote objects.

Although commonly associated with the automotive industry, telematics applications are being developed for use in medical informatics, health care and other fields.

    • Business intelligence, which enables organizations to gather quantifiable data on each area of the organization and analyze it in a way that yields information they can act on — helping them enhance decision making, improve performance, mitigate risk and sometimes even create new business models

While a couple years old this article appears accurate and corroborates the statement that internet collaboration benefits business.

    • There is a dramatic need for a new mindset and leadership skills. Conventional leadership approaches have been based on the Newtonian machine model that focuses on hierarchical linearity, a culture based on rules, command and control, and formal relationships. While this approach might work well in predictable and stable environments, there is ample research evidence that, in dynamic and complex business environments, this traditional approach inhibits creativity and innovation and decreases motivation and productivity.
    • Paradoxically, modern business environments, fuelled by interconnectivity and the technological revolution, are predominantly comprised of knowledge workers, whose creativity and innovation are the main driving force for creating value. These workers are highly mobile, intrinsically motivated and value expertise rather than hierarchy. Consequently, they are likely to ignore hierarchical instructions and leave if dissatisfied or do not feel sufficiently valued.

      • Duringproduct design, over 80% of engineeringchanges areneededbecausedesigned
        parts cannotbemanufacturedor assembled
(Stevens, 2001). Most of thedesign errors are
due to lack of communicationbetween thedesign
team andmanufacturingexperts. To reduce communicationproblems and, thereby, increaseproduct quality andreduceproduction costs, industry
hasturnedto concurrent andcollaborative engineeringmethods(Prasad, 1996). However, in
today’s global market, designers andmanufacturers are often geographically separated. Thus,
        designers, manufacturers, andsuppliers need
        powerful communication toolsso they can

        Schwemin, Dorneich, & Dunmire, 2000).

Evaluation - This article was written by Bill Gates himself, an undisputed authority on computer and internet technology. While this particular article is dates it is still informative and relevant to how internet technology and our ability ability to collaborate through this medium have become the industry standard for collaboration in general.

    • Today, the Internet is far from obscure--it's the center of attention for businesses, governments and individuals around the world. It has spawned entirely new industries, transformed existing ones, and become a global cultural phenomenon. But despite its impact, today's Internet is still roughly where the automobile was during the era of Henry Ford's Model T. We've seen a lot of amazing things so far, but there is much more to come. We are only at the dawn of the Internet Age.

In the years ahead, the Internet will have an even more profound effect on the way we work, live and learn. By enabling instantaneous and seamless communication and commerce around the globe, from almost any device imaginable, this technology will be one of the key cultural and economic forces of the early 21st century.

    • The main advantage of any new technology is that it amplifies human potential. In the 20th century, electricity, the telephone, the automobile and the airplane all made the world more accessible to more people, transforming our economy and society in the process. The Internet has the same revolutionary impact--individuals and businesses can overcome geographical, cultural and logistical barriers and improve the way they live and work. Because it amplifies our potential in so many ways, it's possible that the long-term impact of the Internet could equal that of electricity, the automobile and the telephone all rolled together.

Evaluation - This is a persuasive article written by an accomplished author and professor for a reputable Newspaper. It is recent, seems well informed and corroborates the statement that internet collaboration is the future norm for business and social behaviour.

    Note 1:
There is growing concern that the global economic crisis is not over, but may be just beginning. How do we avoid a prolonged period of slump and its effects - stagnation, unrest and even calamity? Evidence suggests this is not a normal business cycle but a secular change - that the industrial economy and many of its institutions have finally run out of gas. A fundamental transformation is required - from old models of financial services to media, our energy grid, transportation systems and institutions for global cooperation and problem solving.
At the same time, the contours of a new kind of civilization are becoming clear. Society has at its disposal the most powerful platform ever for bringing together the people, skills and knowledge we need to ensure growth, social development and a just and sustainable world. Because of the digital revolution, the old industrial models are being turned on their heads and new possibilities abound. From education and science to new approaches to citizen engagement and democracy, sparkling new initiatives are underway to rebuild the world anew.
We need new models that leaders of business, government and civil society can embrace. Rather than tinkering, we need to transform our economy and society.

Evaluation - Luis von Ahn is an expert in crowd-sourcing and has created several programs that harnesses everyday activities to produce collaboration as a by-product of normal internet behaviour. This video corroborates my statement that internet collaboration is the future norm.

      • The question that motivates my research is, if we can put a man on the Moon with 100,000 [people], what can we do with 100 million? — Luis von Ahn

      • Luis von Ahn builds systems that combine humans and computers to solve large-scale problems that neither can solve alone. Louis von Ahn is an associate professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, US,  and he's at the forefront of the crowdsourcing craze. His work takes advantage of the evergrowing web-connected population to acheive collaboration in unprecedented numbers. His projects aim to leverage the crowd for human good. His company reCAPTCHA, sold to Google in 2009, digitizes human knowledge (books), one word at a time. His new project is Duolingo, which aims to get 100 million people translating the web in every major language.

    • After re-purposing CAPTCHA so each human-typed response helps digitize books, Luis von Ahn wondered how else to use small contributions by many on the Internet for greater good. In this talk, he shares how his ambitious new project, Duolingo, will help millions learn a new language while translating the Web quickly and accurately -- all for free.
