• There isn't uniform agreement on this question -- indeed, some scholars think there shouldn't be a separate field by that name! To the Berkman Center, cyberlaw is not simply a pile of cases that happen to involve computers, or telephones, or electricity. We see at least one theme: in cyberspace, code is law. The actual software architecture can determine and constrain behavior much as traditional laws do in our communities. To study cyberlaw, then, is to be mindful of the dynamics of the code -- who has  written it, how it might be structured differently and with what results,  and how "policy" might be made in a world where the parameters are defined  by "private" code that can bind us all. To study cyberlaw is also to  realize that the code that sets the backdrop for a given legal judgment  could be inverted in a heartbeat.

• I never realized how hard it would be to limit my toddler’s screen time. Despite my efforts, he has developed a proficiency with my iPhone that is, as far as I can tell, standard for his peers. He has even taken to calling it “my phone” and is flummoxed when the old solar calculator that was given to him as a plaything does not do what it is “supposed” to do (i.e., play music, play games, make calls, etc.). Whether it is through a phone, a tablet, a laptop, or a television, kids can do so many things with technology–and it is intuitive and easy to navigate. One of our friend’s children even tried swiping at a magazine page, and was frustrated when it did not turn electronically.

• Digital immigrants (like me) just never feel that comfortable with these technologies. Sure we may learn to adapt by using email, mobile phones (smart ones or dumb ones), Facebook, and so forth but it just doesn’t (and perhaps will never) be very natural for us. It is like learning a second language ... you can communicate but with some struggle.

• It used to be that only two things were certain in life – death and taxes – but I’d like to add another to that list. Your children will always know more about technology than you, however hard you try to keep up!
• two minutes chatting at John Lewis Oxford Street to a very clever nine-year-old (yes, nine!) named Habeeb, and I now know how to stream movies from my smartphone on to my TV via my Apple TV box. His 17-year-old sisters, Farah and Zaharah, who have thousands of Twitter followers between them, were also full of useful advice on social media.
• How can we set up parental controls on things if they’ve been using our iPads since the age of five? By the time you realise they are talking to strangers, buying things on your credit card and looking at unsuitable content, it’s too late – they’ve password protected their laptops and de-friended you on Facebook.
