Are men who download child pornography likely to also molest children?
An often-cited 2008 study conducted at a federal prison hospital seemed to prove that was the case.
Researchers from 2002 to 2005 asked 155 convicted child-pornography offenders at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, N.C., if they ever had illegal sexual contact with a child.
When they started treatment, only 26 percent of the men acknowledged they had, but by the end of treatment, that number rose to 85 percent.
However, the study was withdrawn a year after being published by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, and co-author Andres Hernandez, former director of Butner’s sex-offender treatment program, says “some individuals have misused the results.”
Almost every UK police force has staged raids on suspected internet paedophiles leading to 99 arrests, with 24 children found whom investigators fear were at risk of abuse.

The raids began on Tuesday and carried on through to Wednesday as part of a high-profile operation led by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP).

The raids involved 45 police forces with more than 600 officers and agents from CEOP and the Serious and Organised Crime Agency.
"In May 2011, Lincolnshire Police announced that it had broken up a web-based news group that sold and distributed images of child sex abuse.
A four-year investigation named Operation Alpine led to the closure of the site and resulted in 132 UK children being identified and safeguarded. In addition, 55 arrests have been made of people who ran and used the site. More arrests are expected.
The vast majority of the 200 UK suspects who accessed the illegal images were not previously known to the police.
It is a feature that crops up time and again during investigations of sites that peddle child sex abuse images, said Mick Moran, Interpol's co-ordinator on child abuse."
