Jan. 18--Civic and elected leaders lauded the service of U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn on Friday after learning of his decision to end his second term two years before it expires.
The Muskogee Republican who describes himself as a "country doctor" turned "citizen legislator," announced late Thursday his decision to leave office early next year. His announcement unleashed an outpouring of support from the White House to City Hall.
Coburn already had pledged to limit his Senate tenure to two terms. But the state's junior senator hinted there was a possibility he could step aside before his term ends in early 2017 a week ago after reports surfaced about his recurring battle with prostate cancer.
In his announcement late Thursday night, Coburn insisted his health concerns had no bearing on his decision to leave Congress at the end of its current session. The outspoken fiscal conservative and deficit hawk instead said he is "convinced that I can best serve my own children and grandchildren by shifting my focus elsewhere."
Pursuant to state law, Gov. Mary Fallin will schedule a special election to fill Coburn's congressional post. The timing of Coburn's announcement and the date of his anticipated departure means the special election will coincide with this year's regular election cycle, which now will feature two U.S. Senate races.
Coburn began his legislative career after he was elected in 1994 to serve as the state's 2nd Congressional District representative. He was re-elected twice, making him the first Republican to occupy the post for consecutive terms. Coburn was elected to his first senatorial term in 2004.
U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe said he "was honored to help recruit" Coburn in 1993 to make his first congressional bid. Inhofe, who is campaigning this year for a fourth full term, described Coburn as "an intellectual and superb medical doctor."
"As we worked together, I came to learn he also had the skills that made him arguably the most sought after adviser in the Republican conference," Inhofe said in a media release. "In every policy decision, Tom has sought to be a faithful steward of the taxpayers' money and a dedicated public servant to Oklahoma."
U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin, a Westville Republican who occupies now the congressional seat Coburn occupied for three terms, offered his "sincere appreciation" for Coburn's "unwavering dedication to this country."
"A true public servant, he will be missed in our delegation and in Washington, D.C.," Mullin said in a statement released Friday. "It has been an honor to work alongside Dr. Coburn, and I thank him for his service."
Praise also flowed Friday from state officials for the Muskogee physician who earned the nickname of Dr. No for his stalwart opposition to government spending. Fallin said Coburn's "consistent, relentless advocacy for responsible spending and deficit reduction has earned him respect from men and women on both sides of the aisle."
"Agree with him or not, there is never any doubt where Tom Coburn stands on the issues," Fallin said in a prepared statement. "He is as impressive a public servant as they come, and I am sure we have not heard the last from him."
Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt described Coburn as "an example of what is right in Washington when there are so many examples of what is wrong." Pruitt praised Coburn for "his commitment to secure a brighter future for the next generation of Americans" and his "principled leadership."
Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon, R-Lawton, said Coburn brought to Congress "rare intellect, principle, toughness and courage." Shannon lauded Coburn for standing up to the status quo without flinching.
Former State Rep. George Faught, a Muskogee Republican who left his legislative post to wage a campaign in 2012 for the 2nd Congressional District seat, gave Coburn kudos for "exposing wasteful government spending." He said the senator "led a tireless effort to protect future generations from being buried under ever-increasing national debt."
"A true citizen legislator, his legacy will be that he went to Washington to change the culture without becoming corrupted by the power," Faught said. "Well done, Dr. Tom, your voice will be sorely missed in the U.S. Senate."
Interim City Manager Roy Tucker said Coburn's advocacy in support of eliminating government waste "has certainly put Oklahoma and, in turn, Muskogee in a better fiscal position."
"Sen. Coburn took with him to Washington the core values of our community: doing the right thing for the right reason," Tucker said. "Though we are saddened to lose his voice in the Senate, we support his decision and welcome him back home."
Treasure McKenzie, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce, said she and her staffers "are grateful to Sen. Coburn for his service to his country." McKenzie said Coburn's "dedication to continually improve the quality of life for all Americans has been unwavering, and we will miss his presence at our nation's Capitol."
Jim Flaska, treasurer of the Muskogee County Republican Party and a local delegate to the 2012 Republican National Convention, said he hates "to see Tom go." Flaska said Coburn "has done a wonderful job for our state."
"I certainly understand his reasons for retiring," Flaska said. "I just don't understand what they've done about setting up the election" to choose Coburn's successor.
Jack Reavis, chairman of the Muskogee County Democratic Party, extended his hopes that "the senator's health stays good." Reavis wished Coburn "and his family all the best as he deals with his ongoing health situation."
With regard to electing a successor to fill Coburn's unexpired term, Reavis said any Democrat who might make a bid for the Senate seat must meet three criteria. The candidate must have statewide name recognition, possess the ability to quickly raise a lot of money, and come from the moderate wing of the party.

Los Angeles-area fire allegedly started by campers is brought under 30% control

    BYLINE: By Michael Martinez, CNN

    LENGTH: 392 words

    DATELINE: LOS ANGELES (CNN)

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- The Los Angeles-area wildfire that was apparently ignited by a campfire is being brought under some control, with 30% of it contained, authorities said Friday, an improvement from how it was uncontrollable a day earlier, when it scorched 1,700 acres.
About 800 fire crews have been battling a blaze that began before dawn Thursday. It was allegedly started by three men camping in the Los Angeles County foothills near Glendora, California, authorities said.
About 3,600 people were evacuated, and as of late Thursday night, about 1,600 of them were allowed to return home, according to the Angeles National Forest's update on the Incident Information System's website.
Meanwhile, a red flag warning was extended to Friday because of anticipated warm, dry breezes called Santa Ana winds, InciWeb said.
The wildfire allegedly began when three campers were tossing paper into a campfire, and a gust of wind spread embers, authorities said.
The three men, all in their early 20s, were arrested on suspicion of recklessly starting a fire, said Police Chief Tim Staab of Glendora. One man is from Glendora and another is from Irwindale, he said. Bail was set Thursday at $20,000 for each.
"The way it's told to us is that all three of them were together at the time, sitting around this campfire," he said. "Breeze kicked up, and that's what caused this fire.
"It's not a camping area, but people do camp up in the hills above Glendora," Staab said.
The arrests were made after authorities received a call that at least two people were suspiciously walking away from the fire, the chief said.
The three men arrested were identified as Jonathan Carl Jerrell, 23; Clifford Eugene Henry Jr., 22; and Steven Robert Aguirre, 21, police said. They and their attorneys couldn't be reached for comment.
The wildfire, named the Colby Fire, destroyed two homes and injured one person Thursday morning, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said.
The injured civilian suffered minor burns, Osby told reporters.
"We predicted that this is going to be an intense fire season because this is the third year of an ongoing drought," he said.
There hasn't been a fire in Glendora's foothills since 1968, so the area has lots of brush and other fuel for a wildfire, authorities said.
