It turns out that EDS excels at both ends of the information search spectrum-the most generic need and the narrowest-so that was where we began to apply it at the desk and in our classes.
Several usability studies add credence to Cervone's concern by showing that students are not very adept at discerning the purpose of search boxes. Students tend to search the box that is in front of them regardless of the results this box may produce. They are also more likely to just jump right in and search when they come across a search box than they are to browse through additional pages.
