In 1902, Georges Meliès created Les Voyages Dans La Lune, or A Trip to the Moon, which is considered to be the first science fiction movie. The science fiction movie is only 14 minutes long, but it will be forever remembered for starting an important genre.

Many people argue that science fiction began with the writings of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Verne began publishing science-fiction novels in the late 19th century, with his most popular works being published in the 1860s and 1870s. Verne's sci-fi novels were really adventure novels with modern or futuristic technology, which landed them the title of "sci-fi novel." H.G. Wells' sci-fi novels had a different focus, and he often used technology as a catalyst for exploring cultural or social issues.
