"The Zahnisers: A History of the Family in America" by Kate M. Zahniser and Charles Reed Zahniser, Mercer PA, 1906
My father, Norman W. Pettys, Sr. (1904-1985), in collaboration with genealogist Francis Richmond Sears of Swansea, Mass., spent years researching his line from John Petty (d. 1680) and Ann Canning of Springfield, Mass., and published his research in 1953, updating it in 1954 and again in 1978. Although he placed it in several libraries, including the NEHGS, the book had a very limited circulation and many interested in the line have had not access to it until now. With my son, I have compiled a new, 50th anniversary edition of my father's book, "Descendants of John Petty and Ann (Canning) Petty" of Springfield, Mass. We did this initially for our own immediate family but now have decided to place it on the Internet where others may view it. We hope by doing this to encourage more people to share genealogical resources for free, and applaud those who already have done so. Please note we have copyrighted the work. This is not to impede legitimate research but to protect ourselves from those who might attempt to profit from its resale. If you are familiar with Robert Joseph Curfman's work, this is the book that preceded it by 20 years and which is cited extensively in that volume. In fact, my father was one of two people to whom Mr. Curfman graciously dedicated his work. One note: my father was most interested in his direct line. He did not trace every conceivable Petty line. You will need the Adobe Acrobat reader to view the files. They vary in size. The largest is about 520K. (It's a 400-page book).
