    • Because the Celts considered that their day began at sunset (and not at midnight like we do today) they would begin their feasts at sundown on the evening before the holy day. So, for example, the celebration of Samhain would begin at sunset on October 31st.

    Current use of the base at Middle Wallop is for Army pilot training using the Islander, the Gazelle, the Lynx and the Apache AH Mk 1. Can we get them to fly overhead on the same day as the Danebury Ring re-enactment. Middle Wallop airbase was key in the Battle of Britain.

    Selection of useful images including the Benwell vallum crossing where the wall meets suburban Newcastle upon Tyne, Housesteads fort & the summit of Sewingshield Crags. It is one of the highest points the wall reaches, with commanding views over the surrounding land.

      With 4 days of events including battle re-enactments and exhibitions, Hadrian’s Wall Country will celebrate the influence that waves of invaders, visitors and locals throughout history have had on the Wall and it’s unique landscape, culminating in a spectacular finale at Corbridge on 30th May.

    Mixed bag but some interesting stuff.

      Bamborough  Castle, 10 miles north of Alnwick

       

      Nearest rail station: Chathill (limited service), or Alnmouth

        Batten down the hatches! Expect strong winds, spectacular  views and a great atmosphere at this beach-side key Anglo-Saxon site, medieval  castle and C18th-19th Hall. Living history in a fantastic location.
    • Arbeia  Roman Fort, Baring Street, South Shields, on the Saturday

       

      A ten minute walk from South Shields Metro and Bus Station, signposted  from Ocean Road.

      Segedunum,  Buddle Street, Wallsend on the Sunday.

       

      A three minute walk away from Wallsend Metro and Bus Station

          Staying at Arbeia  Roman Fort on the Saturday  night, with it's reconstructed barracks, commanding officer's house and  gatehouse, plus museum, moving to Segedunum on the Sunday morning, with  full-size reconstructed  bath-house and Hadrian's Wall section plus museum and observation tower.  Cavalry, infantry, artillery and living history.

      Minerva   Shrine Festival.     Dedications at   the only Shrine to Minerva still in its original location in   the UK. A military parade to the site with living history,   dancers and ancient crafts. Join in our special   celebrations at Minerva’s shrine in Edgar’s Field.   Come and meet the Romans and Minerva’s owl. There will be a   variety of activities and demonstrations at both venues,   including a Roman blacksmith, leatherworkers, potters,   dancers and crafts for you to take part in. A small   encampment will be at Minerva’s shrine and there will be   priestly offerings each day.     Cost: Free

    Hadrian's wall site a definite lead. Also ask Simon what happened in Gloucester on the 19/20th of April 2008, Chris said it would be ideal. The first, British, Roman army re-enactment group. They specialise in the late 1st century army and include legionaries (Legio XX) and auxiliaries.

    Britannia, The Arthurian Society is a group which portrays the final years of the Roman Empire in Britain.

    • The largest (and one of the oldest) re-enactment groups in the UK portraying the late Roman period.
