Socratic method comes from Socrates' theory that students should think for themselves, rather than retain "right answers"
Socrates' responded to his student's questions with questions rather than provide answers.
The Socratic Method requires students to examine and analyze a text by posing and responding to open-ened questions.
Discussions are designed to be a dialogue rather than a debate. Dialogue requires all participants to suspend their biases and prejudices where as debates require a transfer of knowledge to win an argument.
In order to foster true dialogue students should listen to what others have to say. They can do this by paraphrasing a previous students' ideas before further responding. When responding it is important to make eye contact and state the name of the person they are responding to.
Remember that the purpose of a Socratic Seminar is to generate ideas rather than provide answers.
Use as a hook for a class novel, book club selections, or as an example for a book report.
