RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Colombian Néstor Ramón Caro Chaparro, one of the most wanted alleged drug lords in the United States, was arrested on April 16 in the neighborhood of Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro.
In 2001, the U.S. State Department offered a reward of up to US$5 million for the arrest of Caro Chaparro, 42, who had been indicted in the United States for cocaine trafficking and money laundering.
“He is considered one of the four biggest drug lords at the present time,” says João Luiz Caetano de Araújo, the chief of the federal police of Rio’s anti-drug unit. “He is at the same level of Colombian Juan Carlos Ramírez Abadía, who also was arrested in Brazil, in 2007.
Caro Chaparro’s imprisonment certainly will cause a blow to international drug trafficking.” Caro Chaparro arrived in Brazil through Rio’s international airport on March 13, under the alias of José Antonio Nero, and lived in the city of La Guaira, about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) from Caracas, Venezuela. His other aliases were “El Duro” and “Felipe.”
