You're managing an event - a huge launch, a celeb-packed party, a guerrilla PR stunt, trade fair or an awards ceremony with gala dinner - could be anything. You've put thousands into it: design, lighting, talent, venue hire and a ton of your time. It looks amazing.

Then the guests or public pile in, and wham! Images start streaming out in real-time. And it looks like this:

Something's got to change. It's not good enough now to have a great snapper covering the event, releasing some to hit the picture desks overnight, and slipping the full, finished set out a day, two days, maybe a week later. People are tracking events in real-time. And using them socially, in real-time. So make them visible within minutes, and they'll be shared - wildly, in some cases. This image of an impassioned PM quickly reached an audience of thousands. It hit social media while he was still speaking, and at least two hours before mainstream media managed anything close.

The line goes that you can't control new media, but you can - and must - do a great job of creating your own. Tomorrow there'll be another launch, another party, something else to focus on. Any event that doesn't show a flavour of what's happening at the time it's happening, and doesn't have a full portfolio available online the same night, is now missing massive promotional and amplification opportunities. You can never entirely predict which image will be the magic one that spreads far and wide; but hiring a photographer with an eye for finding them, time after time, reaps big rewards. Sarah Beeny broke off her presentation to grab her howling baby and comforted him as she continued. An iconic image, and one now hanging on her wall at home."
