• imagine a fire breaking in the night, destroying everything. the only survivor is a three-year-old girl. where can she go with no relatives to turn to? imagine a drunkard husband who regularly beats his wife for money. what can the wife do to keep her children and herself from getting killed?
• the bombay vigilance association has been running a shelter to provide care, education and a hope to girls between the ages of five and 12, who have been uprooted from their families for no fault of theirs.
• the balikashram is home for 59 girls, where they eat, sleep, study and pray. qualified personnel give special training in music and drawing lessons. girls are educated in the nearby municipal school. for children who need extra coaching, tuitions are given to make sure they fare well in their academics which is funded by donors, wanting to help.
• the social welfare department of the government extends a grant-in-aid of rs 500 per child, per month for their basic needs, which the care-takers feel is not enough. according to a worker, "the government should give at least rs 1000 for each child. everything is so expensive these days. what can one do with just rs 500? it barely covers the basic necessities".
• to ensure that the parents do not abandon their children, our ashram has a rule. either of the parents should spend 2 hours a month with their child, to assure them and make them feel better about themselves. if this rule is not complied to, we then inform the court and it takes necessary action against the parent".
• a doctor who lives nearby provides them with free medicine.though they have been making the best of the situation, they need more financial support.
• the owner of a bakery near hindmata, has been sending loaves of bread for the last 25 years, free of cost

• Three-year-old Manju, who is blind, touched everything in her hand trying to feel it and visualise her slippers, dress and the eatables. The children were promised an outing soon where they could wear new clothes and slippers. This added even more cheer in the air.

• Two young girls, who lost their mother to AIDS, ran away from their shelter after being allegedly humiliated by the authorities. The girls, aged 12 and 10 respectively, claim they were subjected to endless taunts ever since the authorities came to know how their mother died.

• How can I keep the girls with me when their seven-year-old brother is already living with me? I cannot afford to keep all three of them with us,” Joseph despair
• When we contacted, Sister Francis Pappu, who is in charge of the ashram, she denied the allegations. “We never asked them for any medical certificate. But because they went on their own without taking our permission we told them to get a letter from our head office. These girls left on their own volition and now they are scared we will take disciplinary action against them. We will talk to the girls and their guardians and resolve the issue. God knows, we never tortured them.”

• The world turned upside down for 10-year-old Akshaya Ramanathan in 2003 when his mother died and his father deserted him.

• She escaped just in time. She has horrible memories of the past and her behavior is unnatural due to the trauma yet she is learning slowly to laugh with the other children. She is feeling the love of a family in the safehouse.
• She also attends school. Reading, writing and multiplication terrify her but she will gradually learn it in time with regular study.

• Ma-Niketan takes care of children, which are from the cesspool   and slums from in and around Mumbai where poverty, lack of education   and sanitation are more of a rule than of being an exception.   This of course exposes the little ones to all kinds of illnesses.  
  
• Lack of education and poverty also forces many adults to abandon   their children, especially the girl child, at a very tender   age.

• Nowadays we are 9 sisters. Besides the academic studies we also   take care of children's overall growth and development. Here   they learn Indian music, dance, singing, painting, stitching   and embroideries etc. We teach them games, gardening and cooking.   Time to time we conduct different games and competitions, like   talent contests etc.
