Source about the cost of oil

      • To be used as an advantage of hybrid cars

    • I summarized the money spent on tax breaks for the oil industry,  taxpayer-sponsored defense of oil around the globe, health care costs directly  related to petroleum air pollution, and a variety of other tangible costs that  appear on the balance sheets of governments and businesses -- certainly not  revealed in the liabilities column on the balance sheet of any oil company.  Those costs add up to about $6 per gallon of gas above whatever it says on the  pump
    • The  popular hybrid cars in the market are manufactured in such a manner to    combine the benefits of an internal  combustion engine and electrical motor. The   shortening  level of gasoline in the world as it is a non-renewable energy was    the  major drawback of the conventional cars, which was rectified in the    electrical cars, but it also had its own  disadvantages. The advantage of the   hybrid car  is that it can rectify the complaints in the both systems and   balances  the use of electrical energy and gasoline engine, in their optimum    levels.

      • Great information on exactly how hybrid cars work.

The inner workings of a hybrid vehicle

    • Electric motor - The electric motor on  a hybrid car is very sophisticated. Advanced electronics allow it to act as a  motor as well as a generator. For example, when it needs to, it can draw energy  from the batteries to accelerate the car. But acting as a generator, it can slow  the car down and return energy to the batteries.
      • energy storage device for the electric motor. Unlike the gasoline in the  fuel tank, which can only power the gasoline engine, the electric motor on a  hybrid car can put energy into the batteries as well as draw energy from them.

      •
      • Transmission - The transmission on a hybrid car performs the same basic  function as the transmission on a conventional

    • In a small engine, however, the efficiency can be improved by using smaller,  lighter parts, by reducing the number of cylinders and by operating the engine  closer to its maximum load.
      • The big engine is heavier than the small engine, so the car uses extra  energy every time it accelerates or drives up a hill.
      •
      • The pistons and other internal components are heavier, requiring more energy  each time they go up and down in the cylinder.
      •
      • The displacement of the cylinders is larger, so more fuel is required by  each cylinder.
      •
      • Bigger engines usually have more cylinders, and each cylinder uses fuel  every time the engine fires, even if the car isn't moving.

more in depth on pros and cons of hybrids

    • hybrid cars offer more than just great fuel economy, they offer many green  advantages as well. Even a small increase in fuel economy makes a large  difference in emissions over the life of the car. Also, in large cities were  pollution is at its worst, they make an even larger difference since they  produce very little emissions during low speed city driving and the inevitable  traffic jams
    • analysts say US hybrids are just token models - not a serious attempt to get  into the market.
