Jurgis Rudkus is the main character of the story. He has immigrated from Lithuania to Chicago with his wife Ona. He is working in the stockyards.
Begin reading about 2/3 of the way down the page at "Jurgis heard of these things little by little . . ." and continue through the end of Chapter 9. In this chapter, Sinclair is explaining, through Jurgis' experience, about some of the more unsavory aspects of the meat packing industry at the time.
