Perhaps the single most important thing to remember in reference to The Great Gatsby is that the 18th Amendment took effect in July of 1920, thus beginning the Prohibition era in the U.S. (yes, that meant no alcohol-- supposedly).
This period lasted until 1933 with the repeal of said amendment. The intervening years made many people very rich through bootlegging and other illegal activities related to alcohol.
