Claire Gilbert's List: Ownership Rights

    • Florida immediately claimed ownership of the galleon pursuant to a Florida  statute
    • many valuable artifacts of the galleon were discovered. In the meantime, in  proceedings unrelated to the salvage operations, it was held in United States v.  Florida, 420 U.S. 531 , that, as against Florida, the United States was entitled  to the lands, minerals, and other natural resources in the area in which the  remains of the galleon had come to rest.

    Native American Graves Protection---- definition of the laws

    • Exempts the owner of privately owned land or a guest of the owner from obtaining  a permit from the Maryland Historical Trust for excavation or other activity at  archeological sites on that land. Enables owners to petition the trust for  protection of archeological sites on privately owned land if the trust  determines that the property is eligible for the Maryland Register of Historic  Properties and warrants such protection.
    • Requires a permit from the Maryland Historical Trust for a person to excavate,  appropriate, injure, or destroy, any terrestrial archeological site on state  owned or controlled land. Enables the Maryland Historical Trust to grant a  permit for such excavation to any qualified person or institution
