Natural Earth is a public domain map dataset available at 1:10m, 1:50m, and 1:110 million scales. Featuring tightly integrated vector and raster data, with Natural Earth you can make a variety of visually pleasing, well-crafted maps with cartography or GIS software.
Use the Data.gov catalog below to access U.S. Federal Executive Branch datasets. Click on the name of a dataset to view additional metadata for that dataset. By accessing the data catalogs, you agree to the Data Policy. Data.gov offers data in three ways: through the "raw" data catalog, using tools and through the geodata catalog. The "Raw" Data Catalog provides an instant download of machine readable, platform-independent datasets while the Tools Catalog provides hyperlinks which may lead to agency tools or agency web pages that allow you to mine datasets.
In order to access and download data GISDataDepot users are required to have a GeoCommunity account. Many data types of data (DEM, NWI, DLG, LU/LC, and TIGER) are available for free download (Green icon). Most other data products (DRG, DOQ, DOQQ, FEMA) will require account holders to purchase data "blocks" for a nominal fee using their account.
The geographic entity codes needed to link the Census Bureau's demographic data to the geography are included in the files. The TIGER/Line Shapefiles do not contain any demographic or economic data; data must be downloaded separately.
WebGIS.com presently contains extensive map coverage for technical applications including Air Dispersion Modeling, Human Health & Ecological Risk Assessment and Terrain Processing. These maps are ready for download in various formats, to facilitate your modeling. The site also provides free data for DLG, LULC, and DEM data
The GLCF is a center for land cover science with a focus on research using remotely sensed satellite data and products to access land cover change for local to global systems. Provides free GLS data.
Managed by the National Geospatial Program (NGP), The National Map Viewer provides data visualization and download of all eight The National Map Data sets and US Topo products. The viewer platform is extended upon the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA)'s Palanterra x3 Viewer.
GADM is a spatial database of the location of the world's administrative areas (or adminstrative boundaries) for use in GIS and similar software. Administrative areas in this database are countries and lower level subdivisions such as provinces, departments, bibhag, bundeslander, daerah istimewa, fivondronana, krong, landsvæðun, opština, sous-préfectures, counties, and thana. GADM describes where these administrative areas are (the "spatial features"), and for each area it provides some attributes, such as the name and variant names.

It's a free to use, open source map warper / map georectifier, it's a bit unstable! This project is supported by Entropy Free and the New York Public Library.
Free Spatial Data | includes country-level data, global level data, global climate data, 90meter resolution elevation data, and HRSI Landsat images
SearchOGC provides a catalog of free web mapping services available on the Internet. The goal of this project is to create a place to easily find mapping servers and geospatial data that adhere to the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. open specifications.
We index the capabilities of these services and test their availability by trying to make a connection once a day. We also plan on creating plugins that help you find and utilize these services from within other GIS applications like ArcGIS, uDig, QGis, and GRASS.
The University of Arkansas has created a state-by-state guide to online and "mostly free" GIS data
