• Popular authorities on  child-care from Benjamin Spock to advice columnists Ann Landers and Abigail van  Buren have often warned of dangers to children should they see others naked. For  Spock, this ill-formed message arises from his early reading of Sigmund Freud  (Storey 69-70). Syndicated advice columnists read Spock's counsel in his Baby  and Child Care (420-21), and accepted his word as academically reputable.
• Legislators have taken the  claims at face value, and, without checking to see what scholars have actually  said, pressure North American parents to blinker children from ever viewing the  human form
• The fear that seeing naked  people in some way harms children is not supported, however, by academic  research.
• In 1995, UCLA psychology  professor Paul Okami published a review of existing clinical and empirical  studies of childhood exposure to parental nudity. In his review, Okami expresses  concern over an increasing number of behaviors being redefined in terms of  childhood sexual abuse. More and more social scientists are referring to  parental nudity in front of children, for instance, as a form of "subtle sexual  abuse" (51-52). The problem as he sees it is that there is simply no clinical or  empirical evidence to support this concern and the attendant desire to turn  naked parents into outlaws.
• Story hypothesized that  early exposure to parental nudity would improve the body self-concept of  preschool children. She examined 264 children and their parents or guardians,  noting that some families were nudists while others were not. She found that the  children from nudist households had a more positive body self-concept than the  non-nudist children. She determined from her findings that coming from a nudist  family played a more significant role in the children's positive self body-image  than their race, gender, or area of the country in which they lived. Moreover,  she found that those children whose families practiced social nudity at home and  at naturist camps scored higher in terms of self body-image than those who  practiced social nudity only at home (Story 53). The causal relationship between  family social nudity and high body self-image was thus also supported by  concomitant variation.
• they conclude that "for boys, exposure to nudity in early  childhood appears to be modestly related to greater comfort levels with regard  to physical contact/affection" (357).
• Okami believes that  clinicians, legislators, and social workers who automatically assume that  parental nudity per se is harmful to children have little or no reason for their  stand. "Surprisingly then-especially considering the vehemence with which these  behaviors have been condemned in much of the clinical literature-there is little  evidence to support dire predictions [of harm to children]. In the case of  exposure to parental nudity, the very scant available evidence points to  generally neutral or perhaps even positive correlates, particularly for boys.  […] [N]o empirical evidence links such experiences with subsequent psychological  harm" (1995, 59-60).
• Okami continued: "Exposure to parental nudity was  associated with positive, rather than negative, sexual experiences in  adolescence, but with reduced sexual experience overall. Boys exposed to  parental nudity were less likely to have engaged in theft in adolescence or to  have used various psychedelic drugs and marijuana. […] Thus, results of this  study add weight to the views of those who have opposed alarmist  characterizations of childhood exposure […] to nudity" (377).
• Such notions, certainly where exposure to  parental nudity is concerned, are perhaps better conceptualized as myths
• Scholars have provided even less  insight on the effects of nudist camp experience on children than they have on  mere exposure to at-home parental nudity.
• In addition to the  usual 'fun' reasons, many of the teen-agers referred to the benefits in mental  health and emotional stability. Many of them recognized that nudism was giving  them a more 'realistic' outlook toward sex than their nonnudists friends  possessed. When with these friends, or out on dates, they could only feel sorry  for people whose attitude toward the human body was not as healthy as their own.  Unlike the responses of some adult camp members, these seemed completely genuine  and spontaneous. Furthermore, the impression was inescapable that these  children, taken as a group, were extraordinarily well-adjusted, happy, and  thoughtful"

  • Karen and I went deeply into debt after we couldn't work for over 6 years following our respective, near-death experiences. Since then, we've become great fans of coupons, discounts and especially things FREE! We're also no longer proud.

The "others' sometimes included Christians who didn't and still don't agree that it's not necessary for us to work exhaustingly and feverishly for our daily bread, the clothes on our backs, and the roof over our heads.
    
    Jesus has never once failed to keep His promise to meet ALL my family's needs since I committed to work only for Him in 1984 ...despite a sometimes bumpy road, since then. Our wants, on the other hand He has provided ...not so much as we would have humanly liked! :-)

    Jesus Followers can praise God because He is R-E-A-Lly in control of events and our lives, not Satan. Our God is Relational-Empowering-Authentic-Loving/Life-giving.
    
    We overcome our F-E-A-R when a Jesus Follower only F-E-A-Rs God by Facing-Everything-And-Recovering, in Christ! It says so in Ephesians 6:10-19 at the link in the paragraph above.

  • One of the major dangers of IM, in my opinion, is that the 'Isa' of the Qur'an is the human Jewish Prophet described there that pre-dated the Prophet Mohammad. But the Qur'anic Isa is not the 'Yeshua/Jesus' of the Christian Bible's New Covenant (Testament).
    
    When the Qur'an is properly read by Muslims in Arabic, not another language, the word used is Isa, not Jesus.
    
    In addition:
    • The heavenly Father of Yeshua/Jesus is YHWH, the written name of the Christian and Jewish "One God" according to the Bible. Isa is stated in the Qur'an to be a gift of Allah. (Qur'an 112:1 "Say: He is Allah, the One and Only.")
    • Yeshua/Jesus was born to a virgin, Mariam, by means of an immaculate conception by God according to Christian Scripture. (In Matthew 1:16 speaking of Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, the verse says: “… the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ”. Matthew does not say, “….and Joseph "the father of" (begat in some translations) Jesus” ...as he had done with the preceding generations. Matthew thus makes clear that Joseph was not the genetic father of Jesus. No man was.) Isa was "begat" by sexual intercourse between Joseph and Mariam. (Qur'an Surah:Ayat 23:91 & 112:3: "He begetteth not, nor is He begotten" or, "God neither gave birth nor is born again")).
    • Yeshua/Jesus said He was "Emmanuel" (God with us). He was orally proclaimed by His heavenly Father to be His Son ("This is my Son in whom I am pleased! (In every Gospel)). Isa was only a human Prophet (Qur'an 23:84-91 http://quran.com/23/91).
    • Yeshua/Jesus lived a sinless life. Isa is not said to have done so in the Qur'an or a-Hadith.
    • Yeshua/Jesus died on a Roman torture instrument, the cross*, to pay the full and perfect penalty for our sin nature and our sins. Isa was not crucified for humankind's sin according to Islamic scholars.
    • Yeshua/Jesus rose from the grave as a demonstration of God's acceptance of His sacrifice and ascended to heaven in a transformed body where He sits at the right hand of our heavenly Father interceding for His Followers. Isa was not and does not according to the Qur'an) .
    • Yeshua/Jesus will judge the behaviour of all non-Followers of HIM after their death. This judgement in the Qur'an is reserved to the Islamic deity, Allah.
    • Yeshua/Jesus will return bodily to earth at a pre-determined end of time date that only God knows. Then: "Every knee in heaven and earth and under the earth will bow and every tongue will confess that the Messiah, Yeshua/Jesus, is LORD". (Philippians 2) He will rule and reign with His Followers forever in a New Heaven and a New Earth. According to the Qur'an, Isa will be the servant of the Prophet Mohammad at the end of the age. According to tradition believed by many Sunni and Shi'a Muslims, the end-time activities of Yeshua/Jesus described in the Bible will be performed by "The Twelfth Imam", "The Mahdi".

• My wife and I had been working with Muslims for years and were aware of this training, commonly referred to as the Insider Movement.
• when I first read about Insider Movements, I had the same reaction she did. I was hopeful and excited.
• Could this be the tool that causes a spiritual awakening in the Muslim world? Over time, as we continued our ministry to Muslims in the Middle East, I realized the answer to my question was "No, it will not."
• The Insider Movement (IM) remains a hot topic in missions circles.
• This issue is extremely complicated and extremely important, making it difficult to write about.

• Rebecca Lewis, a proponent, defines the IM as follows:

   

  Insider movements can be defined as movements to obedient faith in Christ that remain integrated with or inside their natural community. In any insider movement there are two distinct elements:
• This definition is broad and can be interpreted many different ways---which is one of the difficulties in pinpointing the teachings of the movement.
• those opposed to IM seem to assume that proponents are syncretistic heretics.
• The IM advocates I've met are wonderful people.
• They are winsome, intelligent people who love the Lord and want to see Muslims saved.
• we need to address the dangerous practices within the movement, which varies to some degree from person to person and country to country. Therefore, my critique may not apply to all IMs. Nevertheless, the following key issues need to be addressed.
• Some argue that God used Muhammad to bring monotheism to the Arabs---a kind of John the Baptist for the Arabs. This is a dangerous concession.
• Rejecting Muhammad as a prophet does not require denigrating him before Muslims; it means we should not say more than necessary.
• We can be respectful and identify the positive contributions he made to society without agreeing that he is a prophet.
• many other IM advocates believe the gospel can be found within the Qur'an, if you correctly interpret the text. But the gospel cannot be found in the Qur'an, because the Qur'an did not come to us through the inspiration of God as found in the Bible.
• There is also an arrogant attitude---almost imperialistic---involved in this assertion.
• IM practitioners seek to keep new followers of Jesus within their socio-religious networks. For support their cite various texts in the Bible (1 Corinthians 7:17-24, 9:19-23; 2 Kings 5:15-19). Therefore, a Muslim who follows Jesus remains a Muslim.
• I agree that Muslims who follow Christ shouldn't be required to take on the name "Christian."
• We find among many IM advocates a belief that Islam can be redeemed---we should not abandon the religion but rather change it from within and welcome it into orthodoxy.
• How Islamic can Christianity be? Can a Muslim who now follows Jesus fast during Ramadan? Can a Muslim who follows Jesus use the Islamic prayer stances? Where do we draw the line? These are tough questions.
• While the word Christian can have a very negative connotation among Muslims, encouraging MBBs to retain the title "Muslim" can be confusing at best and deceptive at worst. Advocates for using the title "Muslim" argue that it literally means "one who submits to God." This is semantically true. However, the word connotes much more---namely, one who follows the religion of Islam by confessing, "There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet."
• I never encourage MBBs to retain the title Muslim. Nor do I encourage them to take the title Christian.
• Recent Bible translations for Muslims have created a frenzy by moving "Father" and "Son" language about the Trinity from the text to the footnotes.
• What if the only understood meaning is physical and sexual? How do we translate without losing or grossly misrepresenting the biblical meaning?
• the decisions about how to make the Bible comprehensible in other cultures are not easy or made lightly.
• Some in the IM prefer to talk about Muslims "entering the kingdom of God" as opposed to "joining" Christianity.
• emphasis on the kingdom of God can downplay the importance of the church.
• We should view as suspect any form of church planting that does not seek to connect believers with the universal body of Christ and promote unity.

    Verse 5 - On "It will be given
    
    In the context of Holy Spirit-inspired wisdom, Jesus Followers also are wise to remember that He sometimes gives wisdom without our asking because of His grace for us in the context of a trial or other reason of His knowing only.
    
    This unsolicited and generous wisdom-providing "Gifts of the Spirit" can come in many ways including:
    • a "still small voice" that insists that you "know that you know that you know" something,
    • a word of knowledge sent to assist, convict or persuade another,
    • a word of wisdom to move some situation or you along, plus,
    • a vision in the form of a daydream or night- dream.
    
    What a U.S Missionary and Twitter colleague, Justin Long, wrote about visions applies, I believe, to all gifted wisdom:
    • "Vision, by its very nature, has a ethereal, foggy, transient quality.
    • "You only notice details by constant and continuous observation. Most "visions" can be elusive and unclear simply because we do not have or take the time to observe them long enough to notice all the details. Dreams in the night are bounded by the hours of sleep. Visions in the day - waking visions, daydreams - are brief and illusory, shattered by sensory input and kind people asking us if we're all right or what we're thinking.
    • "When visions are gone - however clear, however divine - they can be forgotten within minutes or hours. Their clarity recedes, their meaning is unknown, they are discarded.
    • "The only way to strengthen vision is to record it and then observe it in the mind's eye, recall it, remember it, seek clarification, and most importantly act on it.
    • "If it's not recorded, it will be lost. If it's not acted on, it is voted an unimportant, wispy product of the mind's emotion, and discarded with the dendritius of daily forgettings."
