Fiscal sponsorship refers to a relationship in which one organization shares its tax-exempt status with another.
In the ever-growing world of nonprofits there is an ever-expanding terminology, which may be useful but can become overwhelming and confusing to many.
Getting incorporated and tax exempt takes money, time and energy, and may distract people from the program they are creating. As an alternative, people who have a new project, or an idea for one, often turn to a Fiscal Sponsor to get it off the ground.
Sometimes a group of people conduct charitable activities but are not formally recognized by the IRS as tax-exempt. In order to be eligible to receive grants, many of these groups identify a fiscal sponsor, an organization that does have tax-exempt status
