• John Winthrop
• where he often heard the great Puritan
   William Perkins preach.
• What caused a man
   of his stature and age (he was forty-two years old) to leave the comforts of England
   for a dangerous and uncertain life in the new world?
• He had serious debt problems
• Winthrop was a very gifted leader who would certainly have risen
   to a place of prominence in England but since he was a Puritan this was highly
   unlikely.

   Winthrop did his best to govern with the Bible as his guide, but he also
   realized that Scripture did not always give specific guidance for specific cases.

   of England churches.

  We confess and acknowledge that baptism appertains as well to the infants of the faithful, as unto those that be of age and discretion. And so we damn the error of the Anabaptists, who deny baptism to appertain to children before that they have faith and understanding.[1] But the supper of the Lord we confess to appertain to such only as be of the household of faith, and can try and examine themselves, as well in their faith, as in their duty towards their neighbors. Such as eat and drink at that holy table without faith, or being at dissension and division with their brethren, do eat unworthily:[2] and therefore it is, that in our kirks our ministers take public and particular examination of the knowledge and conversation of such as are to be admitted to the table of the Lord Jesus.

• The Confession was commissioned from an assembly of 121 Puritan clergymen meeting in Westminster Abbey, called the Westminster Assembly, which was convened in 1643 for the purpose of drafting official documents for the reformation of the Church of England.

• to the effect that the episcopal Anglican establishment, which for many years had harassed and persecuted the Presbyterian Scottish church, should be abolished even in England, and replaced with a Presbyterian establishment which would constantly adhere to Calvinistic standards of doctrine and worship.

• When talking about faith, he is very clear that an individual has the ability to assess their own faith as evidence of their relationship with God

• The Bible asserts that self-examination is possible because knowledge of our relationship with God is measurable.

  • measurable as we have the Scripture. 
• We know that there is no perseverance for the Christian outside of the Spirit’s work, but Guthrie reminds us that knowledge of what we really (not imaginatively) have in the Gospel presents a reservoir of strength to the Christian! If we cannot know our state with God, how can we worship God?
• Why do we not know our interest in Christ? Guthrie offers four reasons. First, ignorance of Christianity 101, the fundamentals of Christianity. Second, calling God’s bluff by dealing deceitfully with Him by playing with known sin. Third, simple laziness and sloth or, rather, having great devotion for foolish trinkets. Fourth, for neither searching for evidence nor knowing what evidence would convince us.
