    Movies, news articles, books and documentaries are cropping up depicting a doomsday of sorts that will occur in December 2012; the root of the stories and reports can be contributed to the Mayan people and the changes they say will occur in what is being deemed as the "2012 Mayan Prophecy." Mayans are a religious culture and with most religion comes prophecy. Not to be confused with the prophecies of the likes of Nostradamus or Edgar Cayce. The Mayan culture worship the sun and they believe strongly in a cyclical calendar which designates the beginning and ending of certain periods of time. The 2012 Mayan Prophecy does not necessarily state that this will be the total destruction of the Earth.\n\nThe Basis of the Prophecy\n\nThe Mayan calendar ends in the year 2012, which is actually the end of the ancient Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar Cycle, which should be stated the Mayan people no longer track the long count calendar and have not done so for at least 500 years. Yet, the Mayan people do state that the 2012 date is of significant importance in ending the current cycle of the sun and that a new era will begin. The Mayans go on to say that we are currently within the transitions of this cycle right now. The 2012 Mayan Prophecy is not that of; mass destruction and loss of life or the ending of the world as we know it.\n\nThe Prophecy Explained\n\nThe Mayans are a culture deeply rooted to the cycles of the sun. The current cycle which they call, 'Cycle of the merge of the dark and the light.' The full force of the 'cycle of light' will come on December 21, 2012. The beginning of this new era is about weaving a tapestry of balance and harmony. We can interpret this as to be a time when all mankind should come together in one accord or total brotherhood.
