I like the article as a whole, though I disagree with the limited definition of digital story. Instead focus on those seven elements as a nice structural piece when helping students to develop their own stories.

Richard Byrne suggests these 5 simple tools for adding audio messages/recordings to your blogs and websites. These aren't great for doing any sort of editing AND they could be just what you need to get your students started or to play with the idea of creative constraints to challenge interesting problem solving. (If you can't edit in music, sound effects, or other recordings how can you get it on your recording?)
This podcast comes out very infrequently, but when it does, it is often sublime. The stories move along, sometimes weaving together different threads and often revealing their bigger truths near the close, with music there to create atmosphere.
A mini version of a Garage Band-like sound editor online. The free version still has a lot to offer.
Free and easy to use audio recording and audio file sharing -- space limits apply; doesn't allow multi-track recording, but quick and easy app for devices is great to make straight forward audio.
Likely the most famous public radio show beside Car Talk and Prairie Home Companion, TAL is digital storytelling at its finest. (Huge credit to Meadow Sheldon (@meadowsheldon) at Mt. Blue Campus who has had her students creating This American Life projects for years now.)
What started as just live storytelling performance is now as collected digital stories as well. Might be the most pure form of contemporary traditional storytelling available. Be careful to screen before using with students.
Science and psychology and more! A fantastic podcast and more. These two know how to craft information into a story.
Takes the business perspective of storytelling as means of delivering messages and content; also calls for people to become more critical consumers of stories -- to keep their eyes peeled for when story is authentic and when it is being used to manipulate
