At the end of this month, most of Ohio’s teenagers will shake off their summertime blues, dust off their book bags, and head back to school. But others might be heading to an internship at a local newspaper or hitting the books for independent study. Some might even stay planted in front of the computer screen.
That’s thanks to the state’s new credit flexibility program, which Ohio is launching for the 2010–11 academic year. The plan puts Ohio on the front lines of a transition away from a century-old paradigm of equating classroom time with learning.

9) The final session I attended today was on Credit Flexibility. I will definitely be covering this topic in more depth in the coming weeks. I somehow discovered something about this recently and was so excited to see a presentation on it! Credit Flexibility is happening in all Ohio high schools due to a law passed by the Ohio Legislature a couple/few years ago. The law states that Ohio high schools have to allow flexible means for a student to earn credit, including receiving credit for "simply" being able to prove mastery of the content even if they've never taken the class. I told my high school class about this a week or two ago and they were drooling with excitement over the possibilities. This means that earning credit in Ohio high schools is now being based on demonstration of competency and mastery, not on reaching a minimal standard after sitting one's butt in a chair for 180 days. This concept is exploding the box of education. It is the free market for education! A student can test-out of a class and receive credit for having proven mastery of the content. It's credit for KNOWLEDGE and learning, not credit for being present a required number of hours. Many students still take "traditional" classes to earn their credits, but students now ALSO have the option of earning those credits through a multitude of other means. And it all applies to high school credits, not high school students - which means any student of any age who is able to demonstrate high-school-level mastery and competence in that subject receives credit. (Now my middle school students are drooling...!) Here is one Ohio district's plan for implementation. Credit Flexibility is a complex but very intriguing option and I look forward to opening the window wider for you on this topic in the near future.

Jackson High School students have a new option to earn credit toward graduation.
It’s credit flexibility.
Students can earn unlimited credits toward their diploma and not be in the classroom.
And hypothetically, this could allow these students to graduate early. -
How does it work?
Students must register and be accepted into the program by March 1. Forms are available.
About 71 students at Jackson High have expressed interest in the credit-flexibility option, officials said.
Students and their families would create a proposal on how they will earn these credits.
That proposal must be approved by the school district.
After that, they’re on their own. To master the subjects. To earn credit.
“We don’t have to provide them with materials,” said Jackson High School Principal Monica Myers.
“We don’t provide them with tutoring. We don’t provide them with instructions. This is on their own.”
However, school officials will meet periodically with the students to make sure he or she has progressed. Once they’re ready, students can take a test to earn credit for the subject and toward graduation.
Or, they can demonstrate mastery of the subject in other ways, including a research project, Myers said.
She said this program might be ideal for students who excel and feel held back by traditional coursework. Or, it might benefit students who struggle in the normal classroom environment.

AAA and other dropout intervention and recovery schools would like to advance the notion of credit flexibility over Carnegies Units as a primary unit of measurement for credit attainment. Credit flexibility assumes that students are developing skills to master the academic content, and enhance competencies beyond what is typically expected in a traditional classroom. Students at AAA are provided numerous opportunities to extend their learning through creative and innovative projects that challenge student intellect to solve complex problems with real-life practical solutions.
