Pilot sites
These are examples of how one could use free Web tools in the effort to publicize and organize a Book Club in a Bag program for North Branch without the advantage of having a Web page on the BPL site or categories created in the Millennium OPAC.
Useful Web Tools for Book-Club-in-a-Bag program
This includes reservation or scheduling tools.
Used by a library system to collect requests for Book in a Bag service.
Researching Web form builders that link to databases. Has a minimal cost per month.
BookingPad.com is a site that allows customers/patrons to book their own appointment slots and/or see availability. THe designers did a demo site for me using my spreadsheet that they were able to upload for me.
Models of other Book-Club-in-a-Bag programs
Berkeley Public Library could look to other library systems across the country to see how they have set up similar services, with or without the kits being searchable in the OPAC.
Researching Book Club in a Bag Programs for North Branch, Berkeley Public Library--I like the simplicity of the web page here. Further links bring you to a FAQ, a simple book list, and an annotated book list. I also like that they include a feedback form with the kit. There is no catalog link; reservations are made by calling the librarian.
This library system has an easy to use Web page, links to a chart of which titles are out and when they are due back, and which ones are available. Does not link to catalog. The online reservation form is for use by staff only.
The New Hampshire State library offers a state-wide program through the individual libraries. The Web page offers html list of books as well as a pdf formatted list.
All the info is on one Web page. Pick up is at one branch and all questions/reservations directed to librarian. Book list is added right to the web page with newest titles starred.
The web page is simple and clear. To reserve, call the ref desk. Brochure on how to start a book club is posted as a PDF online. Donation from Friends is acknowledged. Available titles are in a link at top and this leads directly to OPAC listing (entries are listed as [kits]).
This library has patrons call staff member to reserve. Book titles don't link to catalog. This is an effective though minimal way to publicize the program. I like the picture of the tote bags. They also solicit donations from book clubs--a good way to grow the list. The FAQ is a good idea, as is clearly stating policy on the page.
Blog and blog commenters list public libraries offering this service, and at least one notes which ones allow you to check for availability on line. kitchener and Bettendorf are mentioned.
Reservation is by calling staff. Web page lists the books, must be updated when a new one is added. Checkout available for 4 weeks, but an additional 28 days if there are no holds.
Booking sheet in Google Docs - shareable and editable
Kitchener uses the call number category to locate all book club "sets."
They use an online reservation request. The kits are listed in the catalog. Checkout must be done by circulation staff to get the 6 week checkout time. There is no way to check for availability of a title except through staff.
Book Club information
This section of the list is devoted to sites for and about book clubs, sources of book group discussion guides, information on how to start a book club, ways to keep track of titles for book clubs, and news about booklovers' websites.
Researching Book Club in a Bag for North Branch, BPL. Link to PDF of title list. Contact librarian for availability. Use ILL to loan to other library systems.
A-Z index of what books Book Clubs are reading. Readers guides included for some. Readers reviews are posted. Might be a good site for North Branch to become a member of, since the Tara runs a book club there.
Article highlights the main book and social networking sites. I was specfiically looking for sites that cater to Book Clubs, as BPL will need to market to book clubs in the community.
