An information piece on Eadweard Muybridge, the photographer who used his camera to prove that during a gallop there was a point when all four legs of a horse leave the ground at the same time. He went on to use his freeze motion technique to study all types of motion. From the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian.
Good bio of Muybridge
This is Chapter 11 of the hypertext, "The History of The Discovery of Cinematograpy" by Paul Burns, an cinema historian. Provides some historical context for Muybridge's work.
Essentially the same as a zoopraxiscope- might be a fun project.
This doesn't give you the full effect of this remarkable kinetic sculpture- a stroboscopic zoetrope. It has to be seen to be believed. Well worth a trip to the Museum of the Moving Image to see.
