Interactive activity to have students place fractions on a number line
This interactive activity gives students practice in "writing" the fraction for the the fraction marked on the number line.
While this is a great interactive game, you have to be a member to play for longer than roughly 5 minutes~so sad!
More practice typing in the numerator and the denominator based on the fraction indicated on the number line.
One group could be practicing on the computers using this site.
This is a basic lesson plan for teaching fractions on a number line: it uses some of the other sites that are listed in this list.
This is a great visual lesson-part 2-on placing fractions on a number line while also dividing a unit one model.
This is part 1 of a great visual lesson on placing a fraction on a number line while also using a unit one model.
This interactive activity allows students to change the dimensions or units of the number line and then mark the fraction that matches the words.
The interactive features work on the SmartBoard. One group could take turns working the problems at the SmartBoard.
Students have to write in the numerator and denominator to match the shaded part on the number line.
This page doesn't work well with SmartBoard.
Use clothespins labeled with fractions and a hanger for a number line to have students place fractions in order.
This pdf includes a master for making a "double number line". The student uses a paperclip and slides it to figure out 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, etc. of the number line segment. Also included activities for using the number line to figure out which fraction is bigger.
This actually allows students to use the mouse to drag and locate equivalent fractions on a number line.
This works well on the SmartBoard-students can drag the line: it also marks equivalent fractions on the line!
Could use this as a preassessment or even summative assessment of fractions on a number line.
Students use string, clothespins and index cards to model placing fractions on a number line. Students work in groups for activity.
This site has tools for dividing fractions, placing fractions on a number line, identifying fractions, etc. This site was recommended by CMapp for higher level thinking.
This lesson has whole numbers spaced out equally from zero to 4. Students are then given fractional cards and asked to place themselves and/or the card where it belongs on the number line and to explain why.
In this lesson, students learn to plot fractions on a number line and reference a math tool they are already familiar with: the ruler. This lesson is ok; not super great.
This lesson helps students visualize breaking the distance between zero and one on a number line into equal parts depending upon the parts indicated in the denominator. This lesson is ok; not super great; but could be helpful to reinforce earlier learning.
This could be a good lesson to share with students; however, there were problems with the delivery: possibly technical-there were long pauses between parts of the lesson as though it wasn't streaming correctly.
This is Tamika's second lesson on equivalent fractions; however, this time she uses number lines to identify the equivalent fractions.
Move the orange dot to the fraction on the number line.
