This lesson plan is okay. Uses iron filings to map out magnetic field and also does the strength of the magnet w/paper clips.
These lesson plans aren't too bad. Not perfect but have a lot of information and discovery built in. Information on a compass is pretty good. So far, the only thing worth it on LiveBinder.
What are magnets? temporary magnets? permanent? magnetite?
What are magnetic force fields? What is the rule of magnetism? How does a compass work? This site answers these questions very briefly.
Learning NC 3-hour lesson w/centers for magnet discovery. This site includes over 6 different centers for students to rotate through to learn about magnets. Some ideas are good and some are just ok.
The information on this site is good but it is very hard to read: blue font on black background. See if you can find the information somewhere else. Provides a good outline.
Lots of information about different types of magnets. Very technical information that may want to review before presentation.
This is a 2-page Teacher's Guide with some basic information for teachers on magnets. This has some preview questions to assess prior knowledge and some questions to ask throughout the unit to see how students are progressing. Not the most helpful.
This has a video link to the teacher background for the kit.
This is a possibility for our presentation where my part about predicting what is attracted to the magnet goes first in the presentation and then there is a part about the strength of magnets.
Actually this is a great lesson plan possibility if EC has other ideas regarding the mystery box activity. It has the students categorize and/or classify certain items provided in a brown bag. Then, the students have to describe how they classified them. Only then do you introduce the magnets as another way to classify the same materials. This reminds me of the button activity we did in class. Magnets 2 could be the next activity where students explore the strength of magnets. Pretty cool idea! Came from A-Z Teacher Stuff site. Also has some pretty cool language to use with the students regarding being scientists and what scientists do. This could definitely work if the lessons need to follow an Introduction and I could use brown bags instead of boxes :-)
16 question quiz to take regarding magnets.
Forensic Science is the application of the scientific method to solving mysteries. Forensic scientists draw on skills from a number of disciplines in order to gather evidence and draw conclusions about an event. This site has lesson plans that you can use in the classroom. One of the most useful tools a scientist has is the ability to reason. Logic skills are important in all fields of scientific inquiry.
These are the type of skills students use to solve the mystery of what is hidden inside of the box and where it is located.
